I enjoy reading cozy mysteries and the description of the book and all those 5-star ratings caught my attention. I thought a cozy mystery with a thriller author as the main character must be a winner for me, so I decided to give it a try.

This is the first book in a new cozy series, but it's not always a typical cozy mystery. It's a little more gruesome and there are some more serious tones here and there.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read with twists and turns and red herrings, but there are a few aspects which made me give it only 3 of the 5 stars. I couldn't connect with Tess, the main character, I thought that her daughter Gertie was more likable and interesting. I also found the storyline a little convoluted and all over the place.

Nevertheless, I would like to see how the characters develop in the next installment of the series and want to read the second book.

Thank you to the author, the publisher and to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Tess and her daughter Gertie, move to the middle of nowhere for the summer to Tess' grandfathers cabin in the woods. Immediately they are thrown into the middle of a murder scene. The story moves quickly, the cast of characters work well together & there are many twist & turns. Surprise ending, with the "who did it" being someone who was not at all expected. I look forward to reading more by Ms Berry. Thanks to NetGalley, Ms Berry & Poisoned Pen Press for the pre-read in exchange for an honest review

Writer Tess Harrow is almost at the end of her rope when she arrives with her teenage daughter at her grandfather's rustic cabin in the woods. She hopes this will be a time for them to heal and bond after Tess's recent divorce.. Tess was hardly convincing Gertie that a summer without Wi-Fi and running water would be an adventure. Now she's thrust into a murder investigation.

This was my first book by this this author and it proved to be a good read even though some of it was a bit unbelievable. Well at least for me it was unbelievable since I am not a Big Foot believer. But other parts of the book did draw me in such as the bookmobile lady. I could see having her as a good friend. Even though I am a century or two older than Gertie, I would not appreciate a summer without my electronics. My Iphone and my Ipad are pretty much attached to each hand.

I was disappointed that there was no resolution of any romance in the book. I understand that this was a mystery but don't all semi-cozy mysteries have a romance that gets resolved. Or is that just a hook to get you to read the next book which I am assuming there will be. I am planning to read it when it comes out.

I would like to that the author, publisher and Netgalley for my copy of this book. Comments are my own.

What a great start to a new cozy mystery series! A thriller writer, an isolated cabin in the woods, a Bigfoot sighting and body parts raining down? Tess and her daughter Gertie are spending the summer at her grandfathers cabin to heal after Tess’s recent divorce. No sooner than they arrive does an arm and fish guts rain down on the after a big explosion.

This book was fast paced, kept me entertained the whole time and had great characters. From the setting to the book tie in’s to the laugh out loud moments, there was nothing I didn’t like about this one.

This was a very enjoyable start to a new series that completed the mystery inside the book so it won't leave you hanging waiting for the next book to see who actually did it.

We are introduced to newly divorced writer Tess Harrow and her daughter Gertie when they move to town into Tess' grandfather's cabin. When body parts start raining from the sky that is when the mystery starts.

Want to laugh your ass off and read a chilling murder mystery? Then this is the book for you. Tests and her daughter arrive at the cabin just in time to hear a crazy explosion with guts and human arms raining down on them. Yes, you read that right. A bit unbelievable in parts but oh so engrossing, this one will keep you up at night.
I'd definitely recommend this story to those looking for a wacky mystery.

I loved it! I loved the setting, the characters, the witty banter. I loved the tongue-in-cheek jabs at mystery writers. There were so many great elements to this story that had me reading WAY into the night to finish it. This was a well-paced mystery that had all the right elements of a cozy mystery, right down to the infuriating TSTL moments and an ending I did not see coming.

4.5 rounded upward.

I’ve been enjoying Berry’s Eleanor Wilde series, which I read and reviewed from the first book forward; when I found this one, Buried in a Good Book, the start of a brand new series, I was all in. My thanks go to Net Galley and Poisoned Pen Press for the review copy.

I’m a bit skeptical of novels that feature the words book, library, reading, bookstore and such because obviously, potential buyers are likely to get all warm and fuzzy-feeling just seeing the title. It’s a soft landing, that’s for sure, marketing books and book-related topics to booklovers; and then I wonder if the author is just too lazy to take on something more challenging. But every time Berry embraces the obvious, it turns out to be with her tongue planted firmly in her cheek, and by the end of the book I am laughing out loud. That holds true for this one as well.

Tess Harrow is newly divorced, and her adolescent daughter, Gertrude is heartbroken, because her father has more or less ghosted on her. When an elderly relative dies and leaves his cabin and his hardware store to Tess, it seems like an omen. She’ll get her girl out of Seattle and the heartbreak she’s experienced there; get off the grid, more or less, and enjoy Nature. Yikes.

Be careful what you wish for!

The day is nearly over when they pull up to the cabin, a fixer if ever there was one; Tess knew it might be rugged, but she didn’t know that the lovely little pond out back would be fully stocked with body parts, too. And whereas some might be daunted by such an occurrence, she looks at all of it as excellent material for her next bestselling thriller.

This novel is different from the Ellie Wilde mysteries in that we are more than half into it before the author moves in for the laughs. Just as I conclude that this time Berry is playing it straight, something happens—no, I will NOT tell you what—and I am guffawing and snorting, neither of which is becoming while one is eating lunch, but it simply cannot be helped. Berry is a sly one, all right. My notes say, “I never knew metacognition could be so damn funny.”

I enjoy everything she does here, and the fact that it’s set in my own stomping grounds of Washington State makes me love it all the better. Recommended to any reader that is ready for a good story and a good laugh. It’s for sale now.

I love a book about authors! Tamara Berry does a nice job setting up a new cozy mystery series with some interesting characters, including author Tess, her teenage daughter Gertie, and Sheriff Boyd. While Tess got on my nerves comparing every part of her investigation to what one of her characters would do, Berry’s writing and infusion of humor kept me turning the pages.

Wow! This book definitely took me by surprise. The mystery kept me guessing until the end, even though there were some clues I picked up on the second time through. There was also a good deal of comedy without it being at the expense of someone. Without giving away any spoilers, the detective's handling of something at the end made me mad and did not feel realistic, but overall I enjoyed the story and the characters and am looking forward to the next book.

Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This was an unexpected joy and the great beginning to what I am certain will be a great series. I have heard of Tamara Berry (aka Tamara Morgan ... aka Lucy Gilmore), but this is the first of hers that I have read and it certainly won't be the last. It features newly divorced crime thriller novelist Tess Harrow and her fourteen year old daughter, Gertrude (Gertie to her friends). They've left Seattle to spend a month reconnecting with each other at the cabin Tess inherited from her grandfather -- while disconnecting from modern conveniences like wifi and running water. They also connect, literally, with a real life murder mystery. There were so many twists and turns and laugh out loud moments and I absolutely did not see the ending coming the way that it did. It was well worth sleepless hours and I cannot wait until the next one comes out. It looks like November, but I'll be looking for it on NetGalley for sure. I need more Tess and Gertie!

I really enjoyed this cozy mystery. Tess is a best selling mystery author recovering from a bad marriage. She decides spending the summer at her grandfather's remote cabin is the best thing for her daughter Gertie. When they arrive they stumble across a murder. With the help of local police they set out to solve the crime. I really enjoyed the rural setting and the characters. The way Tess uses her writing to help solve the crime is a lot of fun. The mystery is very good and I was surprised by the ending. I am looking for word to reading the next book. Enjoy this quick fun read

After a divorce Tess Harrow decides to spend the summer holiday at her grandfather’s rustic cabin in the woods: no wi-fi, no running water, only silence and nature and the possibility to finish her new book and to spend more time with her teenage daughter Gertrude, favorite character.
But as soon as they arrive an explosion occurs, they try to understand what’s happening, another explosion happens and other than fishes an arm of a person falls from the sky.
Tess is the writer of a famous crime series, she tries to understand who is behind and what is happening.
.
At the beginning the story is good, Tess and Gertrude form a really nice duo mother and teenage daughter. Tess really tries to “solve the case” finding possible clues, hanging around asking things etc. and meeting a lot of characters. I said at the beginning the story was fine, it was not too serious because when things happened Tess' character had the energy to make jokes and it looked fine, in my opinion.
From a certain point, every one or two chapters Tess comes up with a different theory and I found this aspect, together with Sheriff Vincent, a bit of a pain, at a certain point she was so… out of people to judge as the culprit that she was basically suspecting anyone.
By reading this book I learnt new terms: I am Italian, I find this a good aspect.
In the end I suggest reading the book, I spend some nice time reading it. Even though I am curious about how things will continue in the next books.
.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This review is my own honest opinion.

This was a great cozy mystery. This story follows thriller writer Tess, who arrives with her daughter at her grandfather's old cabin. Tess is there to get some work done as well as get her daughter's mind off the fact that her father has not been in touch for weeks. Things don’t go as expected on their bonding trip when body parts start raining down from the sky, and Tess can’t seem to stay out of the investigation.
I loved the small-town rustic setting for this book, it was fun and gossipy. Everyone is connected and you have the old family feuds that run deep. Tess as a character was super interesting. She had all kinds of fun facts she knows from being a mystery writer, which she would just randomly share at times, which just adds a bonus to the fun of this cozy mystery. She has a lot going on in her life as well as her daughters who are both smart and resourceful, both were great. Not to mention being under the sheriff's skin the whole story in more ways than one and I loved it. I was surprised by a number of different events that happened in this book and I thought they added a lot of different directions the story could have gone and threw off the reader. Some made me laugh, others I was just in shock from the surprise of it. Overall, it was a fun story with a lot going on and I never got bored, I would definitely check this one out.
Trigger warnings: kidnapping, dismemberment, animal abuse
I received this advanced ebook, via Netgalley. This review is my own honest opinion.

Buried in a Good Book
⭐️⭐️⭐️
This cozy was meh for me. The “jokes” it promised werent good and some comments definitely didn’t belong in what is supposed to be a cozy mystery. The story line was all over the place and hard to follow, this one felt like work to read, I had a hard time finishing. A miss for me unfortunately 📚📖

Buried in a Good Book by Tamara Berry features Tess Harrow, a heroine I liked from the first paragraph, a new thing for me. Tess writes mysteries so she is constantly plotting as she lives her life. She has come to the cabin in the woods her grandfather left her. She figures it's a good place for her and her 14-year-old daughter, Gertrude/Gertie, to regroup from her recent divorce and the fact that her ex, Quinton, has not been in touch with Gertie since he left. Like all relationships between mothers and 14-year-old daughters, there's is rocky. Body parts and fish raining down on them moments after they arrive don't help it. As if that's not bad enough, Gertie discovers there is no electricity, and horror-of-horrors, no wi-fi. It's not too long before the sheriff arrives, and to make things worse, he is the doppelganger for Tess' hero.

As Tess plots and investigates things go from bad to worse, until she suspects everyone. Things are rocky with Gertie, but they have good days and they are making friends: the sheriff, his deputy, Ivy, who has written a book she wants Tess to read, and the bookmobile lady, Nicky Nickerson. This is an absurd and wonderful book and I recommend it to everyone. Tess is so fun and this town is full of good people. The cabins needs some upgrades, but there is fodder for a great many more books here. I can't wait.

Buried in a Good Book is the first in a new series Tamara Berry called By the Book Mystery series. The unique storyline sucked me right in from the very beginning. I loved how quirky and smart Tess’ character was and her interactions with the sheriff were very entertaining. I thought that the cherry on top was when we found out that her teenaged daughter, Gertie had figured out who the murderer was before her thriller writing mother. I just found the interactions between mother and daughter so fascinating. I absolutely loved reading Buried in a Good Book by Tamara Berry and can’t wait to read what happens next.

Buried in a Good Book is one of the best cozy mysteries that I have ever read and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an amazing mystery full of unforgettable characters that pull you right into their story.
