I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is book three in the Beresford adventures series. This series is kind of a goofy series. The characters all seem to fall in love in very short times. The stories were okay but the quickness of the emotions were hard to believe. Otherwise pretty well done.

The Beresford are deep in trouble once again. This time it is Lady Harriett's turn as murder follows her home from a trip to the book seller. She, unfortunately, chose the wrong book, one where a message was hidden. When the owner attempted to retrieve it he was murdered on the doorstep of her great aunt's house. As she ran to get help, the body mysteriously disappears. Who will believe her now! She was staying with her great aunt while her brother was on his wedding trip. Alex, the new Baron of Rockingham, her brother's best friend was to watch over her. In the beginning he is the only one who believes her. As things progress, there is no question that a murder happened. The tale moves quickly from there. Fast paced, filled with danger, intrigue, mystery (just who is the fat man?) and more than one dastardly villain. Although the reader knows it is inevitable that Harriett and Alex will end up together, the way Harriett went about getting her man was unique and a stroke of genius. This is the third in the series of the Beresford Adventures, murder mysteries all. There are by no means deeply intense tales, but very clever in resolution. If you are looking for a quick mystery read, then I highly recommend this series. Each book is a stand-alone, but are such delightful reads, you will not wish to miss one.

Regency Romance with Mystery, Intrigue, and a Dash of Suspense

A man tried to steal her book, and then, he promptly fell, dead at her feet. Who was he? Why did he want her book, and who killed him? Lady Harriett is about to embark on a journey of danger, adventure, and romance. She is also about to steal her brother’s best friend’s heart. Alex thought that Harriett was exaggerating as she often did, but he vowed to protect her. As dangerous events began to occur, he could not help but believe her. To protect her, Alex had Harriett stay with him, secretly, of course. Harriett was a woman who went after what she wanted. She decided to break through the barriers Alex erected to resist the pull she had on his heart. Would she convince him that they should marry? First, the two must survive the web of intrigue and secrets in which they were caught. Would Harriett and Alex solve the mystery of “The Fat Man?” Would they survive the treachery? I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to those who like Regency romance with mystery, intrigue, adventure, and suspense.

I am not a fan of books that include abductions of the heroine, and this story had TWO kidnappings.
In addition, the characters of Alexander and Harriet were almost the same as Stephen and Mary in 'Lady Mary's Dangerous Encounter', just different names and settings.

For Lady Harriett Beresford, a simple trip to the local bookstore turns out to be anything but. When she is followed home by a stranger, who steals her book and then tells her to beware the Fat Man before dying, Harriett is thrust into a world of danger. Her brother is away on his wedding trip, and there's only best friend Alex Muir, Baron Rockingham, to turn to for help. But Alex has known Harriett her whole life, and she's always had a flair for the dramatics - can he believe her? However, soon they need to rely on each other to survive, and realise that their feelings for each other are more than simple gratitude.

I loved this book. We met both Harriett and Alex in the previous book, and I was hoping that we would see their romance, because the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. As soon as it started, I was hooked. I found Harriett a little annoying at first - she was very dramatic - but once the action started, and we saw that she was really being serious and caring about protecting herself and those she loves, I was definitely on her side. Alex was a little aloof, but he really cared about Harriett, even before he realised that his feelings weren't platonic, but romantic. He was placating her initially, but when he saw the true danger, he really stepped up. I'm really pleased with how the series ended, and can't wait to see what this author releases next.

This is the third book in the Beresford Adventures series, but my first experience reading something by this author. The story was not only a romance, but had elements of a mystery as well and I found it to be a very entertaining and enjoyable read. Alex is looking out for his best friend's sister, Harriet, while he is away on his honeymoon. Harriet makes an innocent trip to the bookshop and on her way home a strange man stops her and tries to warn her of danger from the Fat Man when he is shot in the back with an arrow. That same night she is kidnapped but manages to escape and goes to Alex for help. Together they try to solve the mystery of the Fat Man and why the man who warned her was murdered. The intrigue and suspense continue to build throughout the story and kept my interest till the end. I enjoyed the book very much and will be looking for more books by Ms. Bolen in the future.

This was a great story. A young lady at the right place at the wrong time. She tries to explain the situation and no one believes such a tale. And do the most begins. Who killed him and why? The story unfolds into a great book you don't want to put down.

Pleasant Regency romance mystery.

Lady Harriet Beresford somehow interferes in a secretly dropped message about a group plotting against the regent. A dead man on her doorstep has Alex Muir, Baron Rockingham rushing to see to the safety of the sister of his closest friend. Although sceptical at first Alex realises that Harriet is at risk and that he must protect her. After all his friend Devere had specifically asked Alex to keep an eye on her.
Intrigue and romance blend together nicely in this latest Beresford adventure from Cheryl Boleyn.

When Lady Harriett Beresford finds herself witnessing a murder of a man who stole her book, she rushes to seek assistance, only to find that he has disappeared. With no one believing her story, including Alex Muir, Baron Rockingham, Harriett return home. Soon after, she finds herself kidnapped and upon escaping, seeks Alex’s help again. Together, they find themselves seeking to expose a plot against the regent. With Harriett believing that she can avert this crime but in doing so, put herself in danger, Alex comes to realise his true feelings for Harriett.
This was a sweet romance, in keeping with previous stories in this series. However, I found that Harriett was almost trying to convince Alex of his feelings for most of the book. It seemed that it was only when her brother approved of the romance, that Alex finally relented. I wished at times, that their interactions were less forced and more natural.

It all started with a visit to the bookshop. She selected her book and made the short walk back home.
Then of all things to happen, a man came up and tried to take her book! Even worse than that, as they were conversing, he was shot in the back with an arrow! To top it off when she ran inside to get help, and he was gone along with her book when she returned!

He was enlisted by her brother, to keep an eye on her while he was out of town. Having known her since childhood, he of course agreed. When he stopped by to see her, see told him the story of the dead man and she felt he did not believe her either.

Thus begins this wonderful story of suspense, potential murder, intrigue and a romance that builds along the way!

Alex Muir, Viscount Rockingham, only means to keep an eye on Lady Harriet Beresford while her brother is on his honeymoon. Neither of them expects to be caught up in a murder, kidnapping, and plot to assassinate the Regent. This is a story of danger and intrigue that starts with the theft of a book and the murder of a thief, or so it seems. While all this is going on, a romance begins for Harriet and Alex. Alex tries to maintain distance and propriety, but Harriet is set on marrying him. Will they catch the traitor? Will Harriet find her HEA with Alex? A good friends-to-lovers story wrapped in a murder mystery. Entertaining read.

This started as a fun mystery book and I really enjoyed the characters. But I did not like how they confessed their feelings to each other. I did not feel like Alex really meant it since he suddenly changed his mind in 2 seconds. This took away much of my joy, since I felt like he was forced to marry Bitsy

With A Little Help From My Lord by Cheryl Bolen is both a Regency thriller and a romance. Lady Harriet Devere had a most odd thing happen: she was returning from the bookstore when a man called out her name, climber the front stoop behind her and grabbed her book from her. The next instant he crumpled with an arrow sticking from his back. There was no butler or footman immediately inside the door so she ran to the servants' dining room to fetch. help. When they returned the body was gone. She was staying with her great aunt Lady Farnsworth so the staff didn't know her well and certainly didn't believe her. Later when her brother's friend, Alex, Baron Rockingham, called for his daily visit, he wasn't sure he believed her either. When two men grabbed her and she as forced to jump out of the carriage she was in, disheveled as she was, she ran inside the House of Lords where she knew she could find Alex and he would help. Her appearance made him believe in her odd story and he immediately took her back to Lady Farnsworth's home and hatched a plan wherein he would hide her at his own home, for her safety. The next day four men came to Lady's Farnsworth's and were disappointed to find Harriet "not at home." It escalated from there.

The best part of the book is when Harriet announces to Alex that they are to be married. It was the first he had heard of it. The aftermath of that pronouncement made for an adorable story. Alex was a little on the boring side, but very intelligent and very responsible. Harriet had always been a little flighty but she was growing out of it, and what remained made her even more attractive. She didn't think before she acted, but acted with a pure heart. This was a good story, amusing and yet thrilling. They were both excellent characters and the whole thing came together nicely. Cheryl Bolen is like that, though. Read it. You will enjoy it.

4 1/2* STARS *
Alex Muir, Baron Rockingham, best friend of Lady Harriet's brother, is entrusted with her care while her brother is on his honeymoon. Harriett becomes an innocent victim of a plot to kill the regent. Alex's protective instincts for Harriett are more important than his political career with her life in danger. She takes advantage of their close proximity to convince Alex she's no longer a child, but a woman who loves him. First for her safety they must find the Fat Man. The interactions between Harriett and Alex at times are quite funny. While she keeps him on his toes, he realizes he loves the woman she is now. An action packed romance.

This was an ok read and took a long time for me to finish.

The story line though was intriguing, the execution could have been better. Felt a bit bored for a while and I stopped being curious, wanting it to be over quickly.

Both the MCs felt average and could have been written stronger.

3 stars for an OK read

An innocent trip to the book store propels Lady Harriett Beresford into danger when a stranger grabs her book and warns of peril from the Fat Man before collapsing at her feet with an arrow in his back. She rushes to find aid, and when she returns, the dead man is gone, and no one believes her account of the fallen book thief. Alex Muir, Baron Rockingham, has been charged by the Earl of Devere, his closest friend, to watch out for his sister while he’s away on his wedding trip. When Alex stops by to check on Harriett and she explains her predicament, he’s skeptical. His friend’s exuberant little sister has always had a flair for the dramatic. But when she later turns to him following a harrowing attempt on her life, his doubts are put to rest. She has been telling the truth all along, and he now knows her life is in peril. His protective instincts kick in. He cannot allow her to return to her home. She must stay with him so he can guard over her at all times. Together, they seek the identity of the Fat Man, and in doing so, they learn of a plot against the regent. As important as it is to Alex to protect the regent, it’s even more important that he keep Harriett safe. Spending so many hours a day with her, Alex comes to realise Devere’s youngest sister is no longer a girl.
Harriett is the third Beresford sibling to find love, this book is easily read on its own. I loved the feisty Harriett & the aloof upright Alex & found this to be a delightful read. I also loved that Harriett is forced to take matters into her own hands. The chemistry between the pair certainly hots up throughout the novel. As well as a charming romance there is the mystery surrounding the Fat Man, who can the pair trust & will they be able to foil the plot. An engrossing which I devoured in an afternoon
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
