My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 stars)

My thoughts: I love true crime. Listening to true crime podcasts, watching true crime specials on Netflix or wherever else, and of course, reading true crime books. THIS is not true crime. I’ll repeat that… this is FICTION.

That is important to remember, because the best thing about this book is how easy it is to forget that it’s not real.

This was thoroughly entertaining. It wasn’t on my TBR, but I found once I started it I couldn’t stop, I just wanted to listen until the very end.

The only reason it lost a star was because of the ending. Which was NOT the author’s fault, he just chose to end his story in a way I didn’t like. I’d still absolutely recommend this to any other true crime nerd out there.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

While this book sounded like it would be sensational, the constant shifting narratives from people who knew the victim only muddied the waters. This is essentially a podcast in book form

I tried listening to this book, but i was not able to finish it, I couldn’t get into the writing style, I’m not sure what exactly it was that seemed off.

Book: True Crime Story⁣
Author: Joseph Knox⁣

🅡🅔🅥🅘🅔🅦: True Crime Story is a novel, that seems like a book of non-fiction. It follows the disappearance of Zoe Nolan after a Christmas party at her college flat. Eight years later, a writer called Evelyn starts to investigate. During her investigation, she reaches out to Joseph Knox for assistance with her book. Thus making it a story, within a story. The story is told via transcripts and email exchanges, which unravel the truth of Zoe’s disappearance. ⁣

For this book, I had both the hard copy and listened to the audiobook at the same time. I thought the idea behind the book was interesting. Listening to the audiobook reminded me of a scripted true crime podcast. The book was well written and had lots of twists and turns, with an end that I didn’t see coming. ⁣

I received an ARC and ALC in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars rounded up. This was a really cool audiobook (unlike any other I’ve listened to) in that it played very much like a podcast. I enjoyed the interview sound bites voiced by various people- it really enhanced the experience. I did find it a bit drawn out and repetitive at times. Also, the ending felt a little abrupt. True crime fans would very much enjoy- it is easy to forget that the entire book is fiction!

The combination of fiction and true crime is the type of book that I am all about, so I am bummed to be giving this book three stars. I was hoping to love this one, but instead I found parts very confusing. There is a lot of information given through interviews, articles, and emails which I enjoyed, but it was not just about Zoe. I also wasn’t always sure who was speaking (not sure if the book made that more clear). There were some twisty, disturbing parts which I appreciated, but I just wish the book was more clear and concise. I really liked the audio because there were so many narrators to play the different characters. Overall, I would recommend this book if you are okay with information overload and enjoy true crime.

I was drawn to this because of its unique premise and it seemed to have have same structure of anatomy of desire.

I did love the structure and narration, especially the lofi dirty crime feel to it.

The content didn't quite live up to what I liked about it.
