Sheriff Bree Taggert does her best to serve the people under her care. When she checks on an elderly widow, she discovers 2 murder victims, one of which is the previous Sheriff that Bree helped uncover his misdeeds. Working with her investigator and boyfriend, Matt, they look for clues about the crimes, but someone doesn't want them to find the answers they seek. Instead, the suspicion falls on Katie and her loved ones seem to be in the crosshairs for the perp. It's a great story with lots of twists and turns. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Bree took the call to do a wellness check. Finding a place that needed a lot of work, and with animals that were restless, the only sign of life.nnA. mother and son, he had been an officer forced to retire.
One instantly knew the killings had been well planned.
A plot that flows, and draws the reader in. It’s gives up the insight of Bree and Matt and how she has changed, from once being a loner. A stories that has friends and family. Watching Bree figuring out the why, was it for information or revenge from a past incidence. Another winner for the author and for readers to enjoy.
Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion for Net Galley and .Montlake

You can read “Dead Against Her” as a stand-alone, even though this is book 5 in this impressive series by Melinda Leigh. Bree answers a request for a well check and finds a man and his mother brutally murdered. Unfortunately the man is a deputy who had been forced out of his job by Bree recently. This starts the roller coaster of events. I had a hard time putting this book down, especially after the first third of the story. I really enjoyed this book and will recommend it to others who enjoy a good mystery. May 17 is the release date.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in return for an honest review.

Score! Win! Auto buy! If you enjoy intrigue, suspense, with twists, surprises and subtle realism from taken from today's world you will want to pick this book up. All of Melinda Leigh's books are awesome, but watching the main characters grow, learn, endure, trust, love just knocks it out of the park. On a wellness check she discovers her ex disgraced deputy and his mom shot. During the ensuing investigation there is so much you can just see unfolding, nodding your head, yup, I can see that happening and there are no clear easy answers. When she is called to the scene of a fire, that was brutal, heart wrenching. When her deputy chief goes missing and we read his scene I was in awe and crying. Then we have the dogs, gentle funny lovable, and the K9 warriors, trained, wounded, puppies. There are chuckles, there is a relationship, there is extended family growing into a true family. No you will not be lost if you have not read book 1-4 but you are doing yourself a disservice, you are missing out on the ground floor and watching everything evolve. This was a true suspense, mystery with some nasty happenings, and I highly recommend. Thank you for the arc, I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.

Dead Against Her by Melinda Leigh is the fifth book in the Bree Taggert series. Once again, she nailed it! As always, extremely well written, suspenseful and a page turner from start to finish.

While doing a welfare check at a remote farm, Sheriff Bree Taggert discovers a double murder. One of the victims is her former deputy who recently retired to avoid being forced out due to corruption. Bree elicits the help of criminal investigator Matt Flynn along with her chief deputy Todd Harvey to investigate the homicides but ultimately turns it over to the state to avoid any conflict of interest. However, when Todd disappears, Bree and Matt are back on the case with a vengeance.

I absolutely love the way Melinda Leigh writes. The first book I read of hers is the first book in this series and I was hooked. I have read nearly everything she’s written at this point and am anxiously awaiting the next installment in this series. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

My first book to read by this author but definitely not my last! Such a gripping novel that made it hard for me to put his book down once I started it. Highly recommend!!

I literally couldn’t put this book down from the moment I picked it up. Melinda is by far one of my favorite authors. Bree is a target in this thriller, being harassed by some people who want her out as sheriff. This coupled with a double homicide she needs to solve she definitely has her hands full. Loved the cross over with the other characters as well from previous stories. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I have been a huge fan of this series since book one. I have followed Bree, Matt, the whole family and the Sheriffs department from the first book
This is the fourth book and I just have to say each book gets better and better. Each one has a crime/ murder to solve, each book gets deeper into Bree and Matt’s relationship, the relationships with her niece an nephew.
This book was action from page one with twists and turns and another wonderful book in this series. I can’t wait for more. I know this can be read as a stand alone but you will want to start at book one and follow Bad Ass Bree every step of the way !!

Probably one of my favorite of this series, I couldn't put it down. i feel like we learned a lot about Bree in this one and she developed as a character when forced to step back from pieces and jump into the fray in other pieces of the story. I highly recommend reading the others in the series frist, but if just want the mystery/thrill you would be happy to jsut read this one.

This is book 5 of the Bree Taggert series. Sherriff Bree Taggert is called to an isolated farm to check on an elderly widow she finds a brutal double homicide, one of which is her former deputy Eugene Oscar who Bree recently fired in a corruption sweep. Working with her boyfriend and criminal investigator Matt Flynn, Bree discovers other people have had a history of problems with Oscar. Someone doesn't want Bree investigating any further and attempts to ruin Bree's reputation, career and new relationship through the internet. When Bree's chief deputy goes missing during the investigation, Bree refuses to back down and pursues even harder. This is a great, fast paced mystery and the characters evolve a little at a time and keeps you engaged as you ride the crazy train through the story. This is a fantastic addition to the series and even though I have read the previous books in the series, I believe you can read this one as a stand alone, Thank you to the publisher, author and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Problems just keep coming for Bree. Her former deputy has been killed and someone is out to get Bree using fake media. A lot of action and tension. Hard to decide who is the person doing the killing. Look for some surprise twists and turns.

This is the 5th book in the Sheriff Bree Taggert series, so readers who are already familiar with Bree and her storyworld will instantly recognise the distinctive writing style that defines Melinda Leigh and this series.
Bree is targeted by a murderer who seems obsessed with destroying Bree in every way as she investigates a staged double murder.
This is very much a character-driven murder mystery with several layers and connected subplots of deception, secrets and personal betrayals.,
The killer narrates the scenes in first person point of view, while Bree and the large cast of other characters are in third person. Unfortunately for me, the character of Matt and particularly his dialogue were not credible and I struggled with his scenes.

Sheriff Bree proves once again that she was a woman of principles, and she was determined to bring the criminals to justice, no matter the mounting pressure against her. Sheriff Bree felt time slipping away from her, but she refused to buckle under pressure and set out not just to solve the mysterious murders but also to save the life of her deputy. The criminal elements went too far when they began tormenting and terrorizing the Sheriff. They must now suffer the consequences of a relentless Justice fighter when their back is against a wall. A must-read, it was exciting, captivating, intriguing, and gripping.

Even though this newest book by Melinda Leigh is #5 in a series, I was able to read it as a stand-alone. Sheriff Bree Taggert discovers a mother and son brutally murdered and works at solving the case. She finds herself in a big “mess” with someone who is trying to ruin her reputation. It’s fast paced and I really enjoyed this book. I look forward to other books in this series. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review.

I loved the new Bree Taggert book! It really delved into her personal life and I love how her relationship with Matt was explored more. The intertwining mysteries seems to be a theme recently but it worked really well, with the suspense and tension at an all time high. So glad I got an ARC because this book is worth it. I recommend to anyone who likes mystery, suspense, thrillers with a tiny bit of romance.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, Montlake for the free eARC in exchange for an honest review!

Another winner by Ms. Leigh. Love this author and have read all her books before this one. I can’t get enough of these books. Love Bree and Matt. I will also buy a copy to give away. I own them all. I highly recommend this book, and all before it.
Also if you haven’t read the Morgan Dane books read them too.

Thank you Montlake for providing me a early copy of this book.

Since I absolutely loved the first four books in the Bree Taggert series, I was so excited for Dead Against Her.

It was great to be back with Matt and Bree for another really interesting and solid case. I was entertained from the very beginning and Dead Against Her kept me on the edge of my seat until the end. Sure, I had other things to do. But this story had other plans for me and I simply couldn’t stop reading. I kept telling myself “one last chapter” until there were no chapters left to read at all.

I’m still a very big fan of Matt and Bree. I just love how great of a team they make. They’re lovable and smart characters to follow, and they complement each other pretty well. Also, honorable mention to Todd. I just love this man.

Overall, Melinda Leigh did an amazing job with Dead Against Her. It’s easy to get lost into the story/the case thanks to her simple yet efficient writing style. I loved every page of this fifth book in the Bree Taggert series and I’m so excited to read the next one, Lie To Her (Jan. 2023).

I enjoy reading Melinda Leigh books. She has a nice writing style and creates interesting characters. Even though Dead Against Her is part of a series, I feel it can be read as a standalone. However, I would recommend reading from the beginning because Bree Taggert is such an interesting character and all the things she goes through.

The story is fast-paced, with a lot of good twists. The ending was satisfying, and the story overall is a great addition to the series. I would recommend this series and this author.

Melinda Leigh never disappoints. I love her romantic suspense novels. She weaves together what often seem like separate storylines to become one, without seeming effort. I love her characters, even the baddies, just because they’re so believable.

The main character, Sheriff Bree Taggert, is investigating the double murder of the former sheriff, who retired in disgrace, and his mother. There are several possible explanations, but finding the murderer is made difficult by the fact that most of the suspects are lying or hiding something. And of course, Oscar was neither a good man nor a policeman, so the list of people who wished him badly goes on and on.

I hadn't read any of the previous books in this series, but that wasn't a problem at all. Although there are a lot of characters in this story who share some complicated relations, I found out who's who very quickly. So you can safely read this book without knowing the previous ones.

I found Bree a fully formed and multi-dimensional character even though it was my first encounter with her. About her past and her current, unusual family situation, I know just enough to be interested, while wanting to read previous books and learn more. Bree is a strong woman who in this book, in addition to investigating the murder of her predecessor, has to deal with false accusations that are extremely harmful to the woman. I well understood Bree's frustration at this situation.

The book is fast-paced and has some interesting twists. Unjust accusations and an attempt to ruin Bree's reputation raise the stakes and add an additional, very interesting plotline. They also make it easier to feel a bond with the main character who has to deal with this difficult situation.

I've had an eye on this series for a while and am now even more encouraged to go back and read earlier books about Bree.
