This is a really sweet, chill little book, and I can't wait to order it for the store I work in. I love seeing the way kids of color (in this case, an East Asian girl) are being more regularly featured in stories that don't just (or don't even) center identity. Such a great (if horribly belated, and slow) shift.

4 ⭐️ // When Soomi’s new sweater comes in the mail, she’s very excited, but it is a little big. Her mother is ready to help, and later, her friends also come to her rescue at school.

I enjoyed the problem solving and creativity in the book. I wish the mini tantrum was addressed more, because I feel as though it was a good opportunity to show kids better ways to work through their emotions. However, I understand tantrums are a normal response to feeling overwhelmed at that age.

I can easily see why this book was a silver medal winner in the 2020 Key Colors Illustrators Competition. The colors and unique graphics were beautifully done.

I would recommend this book to parents of children between 4-6 years old.

Thank you NetGalley and Clavis Publishing, for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Definitely a great picture book for a classroom or kid's library. The art is wonderful - inclusive and expressive. There are so many great lessons, from helping one another to fixing problems. It's an easy read for the younger age range too! I'm excited to get copies for my niblings!

Thank you to Netgalley and Clavis Publishing for access to this arc.

Soomi’s Sweater is brand new, blue-green, with stripes, and buttons. It arrives in a box with soft, crinkly paper. And I can just see children enjoying all these adjectives and examining the pictures of Soomi’s sweater to see and imagine them all. But after Soomi begs to wear it, even though she’s not quite this tall yet (and what child hasn’t done that?), something happens. Friends try to help but it takes mom’s ingenuity to save the day.

This is a cute story of patience, friendship, and a little bit of kintsugi to repair and make something even better than it was before. Simple illustrations invite children in and show them the charming story. B

I got this from Net Galley. Thank you for the READ NOW button.

This book is adorable. Look at the cover. It is so cute. Not only the way Susie Oh drew Soomi but I also love the colors that she chose. I like seeing them.

It has simple story that would be perfect for children.

I just got some problem with its font size. Some of them are fine, especially when she wants to highlight some words but the rest need to be fixed.

I don't quite get it.

A little girl named Soomi is bought a new sweater that's way too big. But she wants to wear it, so her mother rolls up the sleeves and pins up the hem. But when Soomi takes off her jacket at school, she snags the sweater and a hole in the sleeve appears. Her friends try to help with glue and tape, but it all just makes a big mess and Soomi ends up having a tantrum on the classroom floor. When her mom finds out, she patches the sweater with a piece of an old t-shirt and some embroidery, making the sweater better than new. And Soomi vows not to wear it until she's bigger.

What's the message here? Young children shouldn't wear sweaters? Zippers are evil? Kids are useless at problem-solving and adults will always save the day? None of those seem quite right for a children's book. Why did Soomi's mom buy her a ridiculously big sweater in the first place? And what happens if a real kid does the same thing to their sweater, but their mom isn't as good at DIY sewing as Soomi's mom?

Soomi's plight is relatable, but it's almost to the point where it's upsetting. If her mom hadn't been able to salvage that sweater, this would've been a heartbreaking story. Plus, I'm not sure that a message that kids are incapable and need to let adults handle their problems is the best kind for a picture book.

What an adorable story! The illustrations are appealing. I’m sure it’ll be popular with a young audience.

This is a cute little book - I loved the illustrations, they had this light wonderful style, and really stood out to me,

The story is sweet with some great lessons to be learnt by children. However, the writing itself wasn’t particularly enjoyable for me - it wasn’t bad, just not very memorable,

A solid 3 stars.

Soomi's so excited about her new sweater that she can't wait to wear it to school . . . even though it's a wee bit too big. When she snags it, and a hole appears, her helpful classmates try all sorts of tricks to fix it. Can Mom make things better?

A very sweet story about patience and ingenuity, highlighted by the author's adorable illustrations.

The perfect read for when "sweater weather" rolls around!

Such a simple and adorable story, this one!

Little Soomi has received a beautiful green sweater as a gift from her mom. The sweater is too large for her but Soomi insists in wearing it right away. Mom adjusts the garment with a few folds and tucks and Soomi walks proudly to school in her new outfit. Unfortunately, the rough school day creates a rip in Soomi’s sweater and she is heartbroken. All her friends pitch in to help, but the problem becomes worse. Thankfully, Soomi’s mom knows just what to do.

I really enjoyed the story. It goes straight to the heart with its cuteness. I loved how the children get together in helping Soomi fix the gaping hole in her sweater arm with bandaid, sticky tape and glue! 😂 The narrative is very straightforward, and at first glance, it seems like it is just a regular story without any morals. But if you dig deeper under the simplistic content, you will find it rich with meaning and values. It highlights the problems of wanting things “right now”, of learning the value of patience and waiting for the right time, of trusting your parents to help out, and of helping friends out when they need support. It also teaches kids to focus on resolving an issue rather than crying or whining about it. And yes, Mom’s exquisite stitching and embroidery skills might just create an urge to learn more about the art.

This book was the Silver medal winner of the 2020 Key Colors Competition USA, and the illustrations show why. Everyone’s clothes are sketched in just green outlines with a white fill-in, so Soomi’s beautiful green sweater stands out on every page. The best part is that the illustrations are inclusive, a must-need in today’s world.
Overall this is a really cute story and will surely melt your heart. The language is simple enough for early readers. The writing style makes it a good choice for bedtime read-alouds as well as schools and libraries. Heartily recommended.

4.5 stars.

This is a cute simple story with lovely illustrations. It's definitely a book is share with my class to delay the message that all things can still be perfect even if they look imperfect.

This was an absolutely adorable book about Susie, who is so excited to wear her new sweater before she fits properly in his, who rips her sweater and tries desperately to fix it. While at school, her friends offer her a variety of methods to fix the hole, but to no avail. Luckily, mom knows exactly what to do to not only fix the sweater, but make it better than before! I think this book is a great way to teach kids that it’s okay to make mistakes and ask for help, and that sometimes, solutions come in ways we may not have thought of.

This story is so cute and is great for young children dealing with emotions. The art style is colorful and really allows Soomi's sweater to pop. I loved the language when Soomi's friends tried to help fix the sweater. A great addition to any library.

Soomi is a cute little girl eager to wear her new sweater to school. The sweater is too big, but her mother pins it up when Soomi insists. However, a thread starts to unravel from the sleeve and grows into a big, round hole. Her friends try to help her fix it in vain.
Soomi is sad and dejected. Her mother fixes it up nice and good, and Soomi learns to wait and grow up before she wears the sweater again. The story, as such, is quite simple. The illustrations are a bit rough but lively and cheerful. I loved Soomi’s tiny fountain that moves as she does.
There’s diversity in illustrations, which was good to see. The book is for kids aged 4 and above, and there isn’t anything else that memorable in the story. It’s a cute one, though.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Clavis Publishing and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Soomi loves her brand new sweater and is so excited to wear it even though it's still quite big on her. Insisting on wearing it anyway, it unfortunately gets damaged at school. Soomi's friends have ideas, but, in the end, Mom shows her how to make it better than new.

This is a sweet story of resilience and kindness. Soomi's friends try hard to help her and her mother shows her how to fix a problem and even find a way to make things better. Not only does Soomi have a great new sweater, but she's surrounded by love and support. It's such a positive message for kids.

The illustrations are big and bold and will help kids connect to the story. There are some great expressive words in the text to help build vocabulary. This would be a good group or individual read and is perfect for pre-K and early elementary kids.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

Absolutely adorable and sweet story. I hate that this still needs to be praised, but it does... The sheer amount of skin tones on the pages of this story is beautiful to see! Taking points for children: Taking care of property, fixing broken things, and helping friends. Even though there are plenty of ways to have conversations from this text, I do feel like there was a lost opportunity to have a concrete takeaway in-text. But that's a minor quip as the tale is cute and sweet.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

This book just sounded too cute to pass and so I had to request it. Haha, my Netgalley shelf is slowly getting a bit more fuller which both pleases me and frightens me. XD I think all bookworms have those same emotions.

In this adorable book we meet Soomi, a little girl who gets a big present. Literally. She gets a beautiful sweater but it is just too big! I adored that instead of saying no after explaining when Soomi would fit in the sweater mom just helps out and makes something out of the sweater! That was just the sweetest and the thing I would have also done for my kid if they had a big sweater or a big other item of clothing.

Of course, I knew the sweater wouldn't have a good first day so I was both looking forward to seeing what happened and dreaded it. Looking forward to it because I was very curious if Soomi and her friends could find a solution.. or if it would just turn into a big big mess. I had a bit of a laugh at the kid who wanted to see if a bandaid would help. Um, you can always try. XD It is such a kid solution and it was adorable! I did wanted to hug Soomi and tell her that her mom is amazing and wouldn't mind a rip. And I was right, mom did an amazing thing and I was just cheering! I know I would have done the same magic. Well, maybe not that butterfly, haha. I am good at sewing but embroidery is just not my forte. My ADHD just gets bored of it. I tried. XD

The art was really cute and fitted well with the text/story told through text.

All in all, I would recommend this adorable and cute book to all.

A very cute children's book about a young girl named Soomi who is eager to wear her new sweater, even though it's too big on her! I loved the bright illustrations in this, it was very lovely.

Thanks to Netgalley and Clavis for a free digital copy.

A cute story about a little girl and her mishaps on the first day of wearing a new sweater that renders it no longer new. But never fear mom fixes it to better than new. I thought it was a sweet little take with bright and eye-catching illustrations. Missed some of the wow factor for me though.
