There was something about the prose throughout the opening chapters that didn’t sit quite right with me. It’s like ideas were half explained and I was always slightly confused. I also couldn’t quite make out what I was supposed to think of the characters. Ordinarily this would be a good thing - people should not be boxed or stereotyped in reality - but in this case I just felt like something hadn’t quite hit the mark. What I would say is I felt it warmed up as I went on and the whole style contributed to a pleasantly ethereal quality. I once read a love story as a child which featured a ghost an instantly fell in love with that plot. It is perhaps a good thing I can’t recall the title as I probably would like it less on second read all these years later, but this plot line felt like an idea I’d long been looking for. It was imaginative and oddly believable and this is an achievement in my opinion for this wholly original novel. In short, this book remains something of a puzzle for me, but in a good way.
