(ARC from NetGalley except I read well after the pub date, whoops) Cute cover, started off fun and quirky but it got really repetitive. It started to feel like I was reading a Buzzfeed listicle so DNF 43% in.

Thank you for an advanced copy of this book. Ginny's humor was great throughout and I loved all the different stories about dating and relationships. Many of them resonated personally!

This is a light, fun send-up of modern romance from app-based dating to moving in and beyond. The tone is completely irreverent which might be a welcome relief for anyone burned out on trying to make a connection in this strange new world! There is a nice mix of formats and styles including guides, quizzes, "overthink pieces" and imagined dialogues. Anyone looking a laugh alongside some validation about how challenging relationships can be will have a good time with this one.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

This book was hilarious! From the section "Terms I Wish I Didn't Know" I was laughing and hooked. Give it a read!

This was such a fun book, I loved how every few pages it was something different!! Definitely a funny take on the odd and something frustrating parts of dating. I appreciated all the fun lists and various stories.

This is a very light-hearted and fast read. I got through it in about 2.5 hours over Spring Break. This is in an odd format--many "chapters " are just lists. This reads more like a transcript of one of Hogan's stand-up routines. Parts of it are side-achingly funny;other parts are just inane.
But I'm an old woman married nearly 4 decades, so maybe 40 years ago it ALL would've been funny to me.

I found Ginny Hogan’s new book, “I’m More Dateable Than a Plate of Refried Beans,” much to the chagrin of the people who choose to be in close proximity to me, unbearably funny. I suppose my frequent snorts and bursts of laughter were annoying and I probably only made things worse by sighing, “Oh, nothing,” every time someone asked me what was so funny.

The ups and downs of contemporary dating (and Modern Love) are handled with the honesty and humor you’d expect from Hogan and she extols hidden tidbits of wisdom on every page, give or take. If you buy this book, you’ll be getting your money’s worth.

Hilarious and delightful. “I’m More Dateable than a Plate of Refried Beans” is full of fun, sarcastic, and silly stories, quizzes, and texts about dating, breaking up, and being in a relationship. It feels like you’re reading letters from a friend.

I recommend this to anyone looking for a quick, enjoyable read about modern love (and to anyone who rolls their eyes while they read NYT’s Modern Love column but is also genuinely moved). The book is also beautiful, with lovely illustrations and typefaces sprinkled throughout. Enjoy!

Thank you to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.

I loved this book so much. There are so many different formats within it (little stories, quizzes, text chains, etc.), and I loved them all. It made the book easy to read, and it was infused with humor. I also love a lot of the points the author makes in the book about relationships, being single, and more. I would highly recommend this book!

A friend of mine once gave me a self-help book titled "Sexual Anorexia: Overcoming Sexual Self-Hatred." I hid it in a drawer and never read a single page. Ginny Hogan gave me an advanced copy of her forthcoming humor book titled "I'm More Dateable Than a Plate of Refried Beans: And Other Romantic Observations." I rejoiced. I definitely did not hide it in shame. In fact, if it weren't an ebook, I would've proudly shoved it in strangers' faces and said, "Look at this delightful book I'm reading!" I guess that's what I'm doing here.

If, like me, you're already a fan of Hogan's short-form humor writing and tweets, you will revel in the chance to spend more time in her witty presence. And if not, you will be a fan by the time you read the book. In a range of formats—listicles, texts, "overthink pieces," sketches, and more—she skewers contemporary courtship in all its absurdity. Some of my favorite bits: how-tos for ignoring red flags on dating apps; a primer for explaining to your friends that you met your partner IRL (shudders); the time traveler who attempts to explain ghosting to Lizzie Bennet from "Pride and Prejudice"; and the Modern Love essay about the writer's endless pursuit of publishing a Modern Love essay.

In the Conclusion, Hogan claims she has "no grand insights. I don't even have small insights" on dating, only jokes—but I found plenty of both in her pages. My new standard: dating should be at least as fun as reading this book. I am probably setting the bar too high....

I can't wait to give this to my best friends, regardless of their relationship status. I think it's a gift they'll genuinely enjoy and wouldn't dream of hiding in a drawer.

This was such a cute and super fun read! I would highly recommend to anyone who loves romcoms, and even those who.don't because it was so light and cute!

First - there was a ton of formatting issues with this ARC that result in tons of typos and missing content. I fully acknowledge that that impacted my reading experience.

However, beyond that - this book was just a bit too self-deprecating for me. I really did enjoy the first half and was laughing out loud. But by the end I was just like...I get it. I had to force myself to pick it up and finish it, because it just seemed a bit repetitive.

Comedy books like this are so hard to review - because everyone's sense of humor is so different. So, I acknowledge that this just wasn't my cup of tea. But, I think those that prefer more self-deprecating and in your face humor will enjoy this unique work.

I’m More Dateable than a Plate of Refried Beans is about dating. This was such a funny book to read. I loved that there were lists, short stories, observations, fake text conversations, etc. in the book; it made the book really interesting. The graphics were great. It almost felt like I was reading a magazine.

This is truly a hilarious book!! I am happily married woman and reading
this makes me so happy that I am done with the dating scene!
There are a lot of hidden truths and gems in this book. Its seriously a
laugh out loud read, and I didn;t know that dating can be so
complicated haha there are terms like "Ghosting" and "breadcrumbing"!
Which made me feel so ancient because I don't know those terms
before I read this book! :)

A care-free, silly, and open conversation on today's dating scene, filled to the margins with Hogan's wit, creative comedy, and invitations to join in on the fun.

It's part scathing indictment of dating apps and the expectations of those who use them, part self-effacing diary, and part activity book, but all in good humor.

There's lots of charm to be found, and hopefully readers can relate to Hogan's plight(s) and realize the great value here. I'm among those who enjoy her Twitter account, and so it's pretty swell to see her authoring books. Looking forward to the next one.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the advance read.

Parts of I Am More Dateable than a Plate of Refried Beans were funny and intriguing, but overall I found the book hard to get into or to pick back up once I’d put it down.

An adult's "kid's" book to dating? I had a good laugh and a few raised eyebrows throughout. The format seemed like one of those "Rebel Girls Lead" or American Girl workbooks. An interesting take on interested readers to dating, and let's leave it at that.

Hilarious book! I love this style of writing, it’s as if the author is talking to me like a friend. I recommend this to everyone.

Disclaimer: I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, first of all, this book is just FUN!! Like, I would love to be besties with the author kind of fun.

The graphic design is amazing- bright colors, cool fonts and layouts... It's like reading a snarky, sarcastic version of Seventeen magazine. On top of that, it's absolutely hysterical. I wasn't super sure when I started reading it if I'd be a good audience for it as someone who is partnered and hasn't been in the whole dating app game for some time.

Ginny Hogan proved me totally wrong! I'm More Dateable than a Plate of Refried Beans has a ton of versatile pieces that will hit home for everyone who has ever dated (or even thought about dating). There are quizzes, lists, fake text conversations, how-to guides, "modernized" versions of well-known media, and hilarious "overthink" pieces.

Some of my personal favorites were Characters from Classic Rom-Coms (written as) Matches on Tinder, Love Songs You'll Realize Are Deeply Unromantic Once You Think About It One Time, and What My Therapist Recommends I Say in a Fight vs. What I Say in a Fight. I swear, Hogan has the most creative and endless material for hilarious writing about relationships.

But underneath all the layers of humor here, there's a real story about societal expectations and pressure of relationships. We're supposed to follow an exact order of finding The One, settling down, having a family- and all on a strict deadline! Hogan touches on all the anxiety of those pressures that are placed on us in a creative and fun way.

I can't wait for this book to come out in May 2022 because I want to discuss it with all of my reader friends. I had to settle for reading snippets of it to my partner, wherein I was laughing so hard he couldn't understand what I was saying. Seriously, pick this one up!
