“Seeking Wisdom” by Julia Cameron was an interesting and thought-provoking read , but ultimately just not for me. If it intrigues you, give it a shot.

I'm a huge fan of some of Cameron's other books, but this one doesn't do as much for me. It feels so focused on Cameron's own life and friends that the bit about connecting to a larger force or world feels like it gets left behind sometimes.

Also, it doesn't feel as action-oriented as some of her others. That might be simply because I listened to the audiobook. I do find with nonfiction "self-help" books that I like to highlight things and see the organization of the book on the page/screen more. So, that's not a fault of the book itself, just a reminder that for me, this kind of book isn't as well suited to audio versions.

It's not a bad book, but it's not as directive and practical as I was hoping/expecting it would be.

I was first introduced to Julia Cameron's work with The Right to Write, which was an assigned reading for a creativity and writing course I was taking. Subsequently, I have purchased and devoured her other books. Her work is very inspiring and empowering, and her writing about her writing and creativity journey creates much imagery for the reader.

In this 6 week program, Cameron encourages the reader to incorporate prayer into their daily routine, along with their Morning Pages and Artist Dates that she has detailed in her other books. She weaves together stories from her writing journey, her progress toward writing this book on prayer, and stories from her friends and colleagues and their journeys with creativity and prayer. I enjoyed reading about what the weather was like each day that she detailed it, as I look out my own window into my snowy yard on the Canadian prairies. I learned what a pinyon tree is as she kept me updated on the state of her beautiful tree and the birds that inhabited it. This is an easy to follow inspiring program for writers and other creatives to follow to reach their most creative self. One does not have to be religious or of a particular denomination to incorporate prayer into their lives and take what they need from this text.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review Julia Cameron's latest title.

I loved this book. I felt like I was getting smart, spiritual advice from a good friend on how to build a connection to spirit (and my own higher consciousness) by developing a regular practice of prayer. One doesn't have to believe in God to pray, one doesn't have to be religious or go to any services; one just has to think or write or speak aloud what one wants, is grateful for, wishes, worries over, or has on one's mind. Praying is a form of self-awareness and mindfulness, but I find prayer feels better than just reminding myself what I am feeling, naming my emotions or meditating.

Unsurprisingly, Cameron reminds us all to do three morning pages every day upon waking and to have a weekly artist's date with ourselves every week, and much of this will be familiar if you've read The Artist's Way, but here she talks about the value of these practices with fresh anecdotes that might inspire you. (They inspired me! I am journaling much more--though still can't figure out how to get up before my pets, who demand I let them out and feed them as soon as I wake up -- so not doing my pages in the morning. And I have done artist's dates, working on collaging soul cards and really enjoying myself.

The main value of this book is its celebration of and encouragement of building a practice of regular prayer. I have tried to maintain a prayer journal , as writing my prayers down seems the best way for me to feel committed to praying. But what I really want is to buy this book and own it. The audio copy I listened to was provided by Netgalley for free in exchange for this honest review. The narration was fantastic (and though I want to believe that is Julia Cameron's voice, I know it isn't), but I bet owning the fard copy will be even better.

Reading The Artist’s Way seems like a rite of passage. Based on that previous work, I was interested in this update, Seeking Wisdom. I’m stopping after a reference to murder in the first chapter, which is presented with minimal context and inordinate detail. It was jarring enough to negate my interest in the book altogether. Thank you for access to the ARC.

I love Julia Cameron and the perspective that she gives. I had been praying for something like this. Cheers to the next 6 weeks!

Thank you to NETGALLEY for an audiobook advanced copy. I was not compensated and this is my honest review.

I had high hopes for this book, but I just could not connect with the narrator nor the way in which the content was presented. I increased the speed and still felt my mind drifting off while listening.

Did not finish.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to read an ARC of Seeking Wisdom by Julia Cameron.
Many years ago Julia Cameron wrote The Artist's Way which has become a bible for many creative people, aspiring artists, and writers. The book gave some of the clearest instructions for tapping one's creative potential. It also allowed the reader, once into action, to really comprehend the discipline and commitment of time it takes to follow one's artistic dream.

In Seeking Wisdom, Ms Cameron lets us into her life. She opens with her personal story of a failed marriage followed by forty-two years of sobriety. With each successive chapter, she retells the suggestions she had written in the Artist's Way along with her own experiences as well as feedback and questions from readers.
Having read the Artist's way decades ago, I only remembered the chapter titles and some of the instructions I loved and one I especially disliked. So I loved reading all her ideas along with questions I wish I could have asked back then. I found myself jumping right in with Morning Pages the next morning.

So if you are someones who wants a second shot at the Artist's Way, I highly recommend this book--as the softer, warmer, gentler way into tapping one's ceative. And if you haven't read it and have wondered what all the hype was about, this is a great way to find out.

Recommended for fans of The Artist's Way and/or folks in a 12-step recovery program.

Then Julia's talk about praying to a God of your own understanding will not be a new concept. She gives tons of ways to pray, reasons to pray and benefits for doing so.

This is an excellent audiobook but since it's a 6-week course with journal prompts, I would also want a companion ebook or hard copy to do the work.

Thanks to the publisher for the early release audiobook recording via the NetGalley app.
