An enjoyable and well written story with interesting characters. I was riveted by Griffin and Effie's journey of desire and acceptance to their wonderful happily ever after. What starts off with a matter of convenience between the two turns into something so much more.

With the death of her husband Effie has to try anything to keep her little family from starvation, even if that means highway robbery.

Our heroine has been taking care of others for most of her life.

Griffin St.John is bored with his life as it is. As a second son, with plenty of money of his own, there are no pressures put on him.

Who would have guessed that being robbed was just what he needed?

The characters are all great fun. The ladies all have their own reasons for what they must do.

This is the second book in the series, but you could read each on it's own. It will however tempt you to buy the others.

Great fun.

I just read this book and I couldn't put it down.
Normally, a poor widow with child turned thief story doesn't impress me. So many things could go wrong and her child would be an orphan, but this story i really did enjoy.
The heroine is a widow of a scholar. When her husband was alive, she ran the house and raised her son. Her husband, who never had so much as a stuffy nose, caught a cold that turned to pneumonia. I cried when I read how her husband passed. It was so sad. The heroine hasn't a reliable income and she has many friends in the same situation. A group of the women decide that they will go on highway robberies in order to make money. They try to be careful but they had robbed someone and his brother fought back, chasing after them, supporting the police by purchasing additional horses so they could cut down on robberies. It is actually, the previous story in the series. While he is doing all this, he falls in love with one of her friends and now the police are looking for them. Thw heroine has also opened her home to one of the group and her father. They moved in because the father owed money and was in danger because of it. The heroine wanted to help and she decided to do a robbery on her own. The hero is a rake, good for nothing that is travelling alone when he is robbed. He tries to catch her and finds out she is a woman. The heroine gets away, but loses her cross from her husband. The hero finds the cross and begins a search for her. Now, the strange thing in the story, the hero did not seem attracted to the heroine at first. He just admires her lack of fear.
And while the story has a great backdrop and story line, I felt it could have had a little more maturity. But that doesn't matter because I was on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed this boot and give 5 stars with a recommend reading

Effie is an impoverished mother and seamstress with an improbable night job - as a highwayman! When she robs Griffin on her own, he discovers her identity, seeks her out, and asks her to be his mistress.

I enjoyed this book more than the first, Spinster Sister - which is saying something because Spinster Sister was excellent. Griffin is a swoon-worthy hero who just wants to look after Effie, who is herself a compelling heroine who has been forced to make hard choices. I loved the friendship between the highwaywomen, and how they supported each other.

I also liked the conflict of Effie trying to figure herself out after being pigeonholed as a wife and mother, but I thought this plot-line was a little unbalanced because it was focused on rather late in the book.

Overall, a great addition to the series, and I hope the next is just as good.

Exactly the kind of spice-filled and action-packed historical romances that I ADORE. It was sexy and sweet and featured some interesting female characters with fully defined characters and motivations. I found myself craving more of each of these ladies as the book went on.

It’s all about a young woman forced into robbery because of her financial situation, right up until she robs the wrong/right man. Griffin is so sweet and earnest, you really feel that he loves her from the beginning. I wish it had gone into his rakish history a bit more. The reformed rake quickly falls for his thief, who learns a really important lesson about knowing and loving yourself.

There are some clumsy bits, but the book is charming and fun and well worth a read if this is your genre. It’s definitely mine. Probably a 3.8 rounded up to a 4. Looking forward to more from the series.

Thanks NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

After the death of her husband, Effie Green decided to take control of her life and joined together with several women, to become a highway-woman. Known as the Band of Brigands, they rob carriages and divide up the sale of the goods amongst each other. When Effie finds that she is still struggling to care for her son, aunt and two friends, she decides to attempt a robbery on her own. Yet when she finds herself in a struggle with Griffin St. John, after she steals his possession, she is truly shaken. Griffin has realised that the thief, is actually a female. When he later confronts Effie, scandal soon follows.
This was an emotive read, beginning with the death of Effie’s husband. At times, it seemed near impossible that Effie would every rise above the challenges that she was faced. Yet in meeting Griffin, Effie begins to garner both courage and vibrancy. Her belief in herself leaps off the pages and it is through Griffin that this is possible. However, the impact that Griffin has is portrayed quite subtly, as his generosity and care for Effie, is done with her in mind. Likewise, Griffin matures in this book and whilst he begins it by seeming almost indifferent to his family, his involvement and regard for them appears to grow with this association with Effie. I look forward to reading more books in this series with a hint of Mina’s story appearing at the end of the book.

An unusual book which l did enjoy. It was not the usual straight forward story. There was a lot of excitement and a very good storyline. The main characters were intriguing and interesting who you wanted to know what happened to them . I was not disappointed in the story and do recommend that you read it .

I had mixed feelings reading this novel. On the one hand, it is well written with a good plot and it does come to a successful conclusion. On the other, everything inside of me shudders at the choices Effie made. However, when faced with the need to feed and clothe a growing child, most mothers will do almost anything to protect them, even if it means breaking the law. Effie's loyalty to her friends turns out to be her greatest failing, but one cannot help but like her. Griffin has a reputation that precedes him, much to the frustration of his older brother. Finding in Effie a woman who calls out to his heart, Griffin does what he can to bring about a change of circumstances, but he does not take her strong ties into account. Fortunately, the novel does close on a happy note. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Effie Green is at her wits end. Trying to manage a household after her husband's death has left her constantly worrying how to make ends meet including trying to keep her young son from finding out how dire their situation truly is. Effie along with a select few friends come up with a daring scheme to rob carriages and split the profits from selling the bounty. When Effie decides to go out on her own, the carriage she robs brings her face to face with Griffin St. John and her life is changed forever when he uncovers her identity and confronts her. Griffin wants to know her better. Can she accept his scandalous proposal to keep her secret?

It was heartbreaking to see what Effie and poor women like her had to resort to to keep her son fed and a roof over their heads. She was a resourceful young woman who knew she was out of options when she decides to accept Griffin's offer to become his mistress. I really liked Griffin who turns out to be more honorable than anyone ever imagined. I was routing for both of them to get their HEA and after a few bumps along the way, they do. What I didn't understand was when Effie is able to follow her dream, why didn't she share her good fortune with her friends? The epilogue was a disconnect for me setting up the next book in the story. I was hoping to see that Effie did find a way to help her friends that didn't include robbing carriages.

Ladies, this man. That. Is. All. Okay, not really but he has it going on. Effie is down on her luck, tries a robbery by herself and gets caught. What does the hero, Griffin, do? Well, being the gentleman he is, he tries to help her and when she will not accept his help. he goes to plan B, offering for her to be his mistress. I like how Elise gave these two characters a lot of depth and emotion. I love how Griffin, even though he can be wild, reigns it in and lets love overtake him and how Effie grows as a persona. It is a really beautiful read. Fantastic story.
