I can't believe I'm saying, especially since I am mostly interested in reading historical fiction. However, this book set in New York during the Gilded Age just didn't do it for me. I managed to finish it, yet it was difficult. Maybe it's time to go for the more contemporary reads.

I was excited to read a book about privileged New York society during the Gilded Age. I felt like I had gone back in time and gotten a behind the scenes peek at what really went on back then. An enjoyable historical fiction book!

I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction, but I'm slowly finding that I do love a good story set during the gilded age. So I was very interested in this book. I honestly struggled with this one and wanted to love it so much, but it just wasn't quite what I wanted and expected. I felt the pacing of the book was off. The beginning was way too long and drawn out for me. I also just wasn't quite feeling these characters. I didn't like them and that became a struggle for me as I read the book. This wan't an awful story, but I just had a lot of issues with it.

Saving Wentworth Hall is a historical novel set in the early 20th century that follows the life of wealthy Spencer Wentworth. When the novel opens he is returning from a ball to his home in Knightsbridge to an urgent telegram to come home to New York immediately, and thus starts the journey of Spencer and his wealthy family. They own a bank and a lovely mansion on Long Island, Spencer has been called home to run the family business after the death of his Grandfather. He meets and falls for Lorna a friend of his sister Emma. Lorna however is not from the upper echelons of society and is not considered the best choice for a Wentworth bride, and the there is the Stock Market crash of ‘29. Spencer finds himself struggling to maintain all that his family has worked for and achieved in the face of the Great Depression. Can he do his duty and find love at the same time?

This was an enjoyable novel that takes the perspective of the wealthy Americans and how the stock market crash and the Great Depression affected their lives, I recommend this for fans of Downton Abbey and high society of the early 20th century.

Thanks to Netgalley, BooksGoSocial and the author for the chance to read and review this book,

Saving Wentworth Hall is a tale of responsibility, love, and betrayal during the Gilded Age. If you like Downton Abbey, you’ll love this. A quick and easy read that I found myself picking up after a long day to unwind. The characters are beautifully written and I came to love them within the first few pages and was rooting for them all the way to the end.

This is a first time read for my by this author so I didn't have any specific expectations going into it. I found the story to be interesting and entertaining and it kept my attention all the way through. After graduating college, Spencer has been away from home, living a life of leisure in London. He receives a note from the family lawyer requesting that he come home to New York as soon as possible. He comes home to learn that he is the heir of the Wentworth family fortune, which includes Wentworth bank. Needless to say, he is from a wealthy and privileged family. It is up to him to keep the fortune strong. Then the Depression hits and he is faced with many challenges and trials. His sister, Emma, is also facing her own challenges with a scandal that would tarnish the Wentworth reputation. Amidst all that, Spencer falls in love with Lorna, who is from a middle-class family. This was an entertaining story, with an interesting plot that held my interest the whole time. It gave me sort of a Downton Abbey feeling, as one reader pointed out, and I am a big fan, so this book was right up my alley!
An enjoyable story that I am happy to have had the opportunity to read.

I really struggled to get into this book, and there did end up being some parts of this book that I enjoyed. But, overall, I didn't love it.

This book was unreadable. I tried very hard to finish this book but did not. The story itself was not interesting.

I am sorry to say that this book was not my cup of tea, no matter how much I wanted to love it. I thought that the writing was awkward and the plot was predictable.

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: Historical, Romance

Well, I wanted to love this book, I really enjoy historical reads, especially those with a romantic slant. Sadly it wasn't to be.

Its not a bad book, but for me it felt very superficial. The characters all felt a little shallow, undeveloped. It takes til nearly 25% before we even learn the reason Spencer has to return home. The major points seemed to have promise but just didn't live up to them. Likewise the romance, that took some turns that I didn't expect, which is always fun, but which sadly didn't feel genuine.

Maybe I'm just the wrong reader. Another reviewer compared the writing style to Danielle Steel. I've only read one book by her a long time ago and found the same issues that I had here. So perhaps if you like Danielle Steel that's an indication this could be a book for you.

Stars: Two and a half, I think its one of those not the book but the reader issues. Not all readers will like all books. I try to choose carefully but sometimes I get it wrong.

1927 - London

Spencer Wentworth returns to his Grosvenor Square home late one evening to find a telegram from the family lawyer requesting him to come home urgently. Spencer is a young man from a very wealthy family. Both of his parents came from money and reside at the family’s main estate, Wentworth Hall, located on the North Shore of Long Island, New York. Spencer has a younger sister, Emma. First educated by governesses, prep schools, and then Spencer went to Harvard. After graduation, he set off for a World Tour. Now, he has been living a life of leisure in London. Having been away from home for three years, he decides it is time to return to New York.

When Spencer learns that his grandfather has passed away and has named him heir to the Wentworth fortune that began with the Wentworth Bank, he decides to start at the bottom rung of the bank and work his way up learning all aspects of banking. Then he meets Lorna, a friend of his sister, Emma, and he is smitten.

But then the economy becomes unstable with the stock market crash and the Depression on its way. Spencer becomes very busy doing all he can to firm up the bank and hope to keep it strong. But he faces many trials ahead, both professional and personal. Will he be able to retain the legacy his grandfather left him?

The descriptions written by the author are very well done and her writing style is somewhat similar to that of Danielle Steel whose work I enjoy. Since this book was originally published a few years ago under a different title, I was rather disappointed to find it needs some editing. But all in all, it is a very good story and I enjoyed it immensely.

I’m still new to historical romance but so far I have read haven’t really disappointed me, so hasn’t this one. I really look forward to the character development of the MCs, and it was so satisfying to see them grow. It was a very enjoyable read for me
