I can't post all links yet as I am part of a blog tour for this book.

This is a series and I did not realize that. I wish I would have had the chance to read the first few books so I would have honestly understood who each of these characters were. The main two characters that is. Kane and Jenna. Both are with the police. One a special opps and the other a sheriff.

This story starts out with Jenna telling Kane who she was. What went on in her past. What she went through while undercover. Being married to the son of the head of the Cartel. Taking beatings when she certainly could have fought back and hurt the man. What her life was like before. Before she had to give up her life and go into witness protection.

This book definitely has the potential to be great. It was very much edge of your seat for the first half and the last part. The between parts kind of let me down but it was still good. It would have been way better if I had read the whole series though. I would have know how Jenna came to be undercover. Married Michael Carlos. Gone through so much. It would have explained the nightmare at the beginning. The prologue. That part pulled me in so completely then I was left wondering what happened. But it was still a good story.

This story deals with a lot of things from drug running to children being sold for sex. A family who can destroy you in a second and never blink an eye. A woman who managed to infiltrate them and come out alive. Who went on to have a life. To help others. It's an edge of your seat thriller in so many places.

Thank you #NetGalley, #DKHood, #Bookouture for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.

3.5 out of 5 stars for me. I recommend you read some of the previous books so you know exactly what is going on. It's still good and I believe you will enjoy this one. It did fall a bit short for me because I needed more info about some things. Still it was good.

I really enjoyed this prequel to Sheriff Jenna Alton and her past as a DEA agent. She helped take down a cartel, suffering abuse at the hands of her husband, Michael. When she realized the cartel had entered into the world of trafficking, she testified against them. She was now on the cartel hit list, but refused her handlers when they wanted her to enter WITSEC. She insisted on continuing her career in law enforcement and the story takes the reader through the process for her to become the sheriff of small-town Black Rock Falls, Montana. Due to her continuing nightmares she agrees to tell her love interest, David Kane, about her past. Her fight to protect victims of abuse brings her to the attention of the locals who will try to cover up the true cause of a woman’s death. When the killer comes after her, how will she evade what he has planned for her? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

Don't look back tells us Sheriff Jenna's back story. We knew Jenna had been put in witness protection from working in the DEA, but this story gives us more of the gritty details.
We are also shown Jenna's introduction to Black Rock Falls!
I do like the last sentence in this book, warning people from coming to Black Rock Falls. It is certainly a magnet for serial killers and I look forward ro the next thrilling instalment!

I really enjoyed this fast-moving installment of the Alton-Kane combo.

Jenna Alton is portrayed as a strong female law enforcement officer with a firm stand on justice for all victims, especially those of domestic violence. Her history working under cover has helped cement that foundation and makes her an ideal sheriff in small town Montana where she is placed after the DEA abandons her.

The pace of the book is rip roaringly quick once Jenna arrives in Black Rock Falls. Maybe a bit too fast to be realistic, but it’s nice to see justice move at something more than a snail’s pace.

I really liked Deputy Rowley and his eagerness to please his new boss. I hope there is more to come.

Thanks NetGalley for a great afternoon’s read.

Jenna Alton was once an FBI agent who would stop at nothing to put those who hurt the innocent behind bars. Undercover FBI agent Jenna Alton has been playing wife to dangerous criminal husband Michael Carlos for four years. Tonight she plans to make her escape. But as she gathers her belongings together, she hears something that stops her in her tracks – he’s taken a young girl called Mandy, and she’s being held somewhere close. Jenna knows what she must do – find the child and get her to safety – even if it means risking her own life.
This is Jenna’s backstory & how she became the sheriff of Black Rock Falls. A fast paced quick read which answered questions I’d had & also gives more insight into Jenna & reasons why she’s the way she is. A must read for lovers of the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Wow! What a suspenseful read!
We discover more about the backstory of the main character, Jenna, in reading Don’t Look Back.
Very fast paced story with many tense situations/moments.
Suspenseful, intriguing read.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.

I have read the WHOLE series up to this point. It was great to have Jenna's background finally after so many books! Her back story fitted so well with her character and I was definitely rooting for her the entire time. The ONLY thing I personally felt is - I am so sick of reading about Aunty Betty's Cafe. We get it! It is a great cafe with amazing food and the people are so nice etc etc etc. I just feel like in all the books there ALWAYS has to be at least 10 mentions of it in the book. LET IT GO!!

Besides that I loved it and regardless I will ALWAYS pick up the next one!

Never having read a Kane and Alton novel or any DK Hood novel, I wasn't sure what to expect.

Going into a series at an advanced stage can sometimes be problematic but that wasn't the case here. Getting Jenna's back story was almost like a prequel, establishing motivation for her opinions and actions as the Sheriff of Black Rock Falls, Montana.

I loved that from the very beginning she didn't back down when faced with men in positions of authority who accepted the easiest conclusion rather than investigate fully.

I loved that she was prepared to make massive changes to her life in order to continue her commitment to the law enforcement community.

Don't Look Back has not just given me a new author to explore but a new series to (I'm sure) read and enjoy.

This was so good. I loved reading Jenna's story and discovering the secrets of her past.

Although this is a short story it wasn't short on drama. It had all the hallmarks of the fantastic Black Rock Falls series.

I can't wait to read the next enthralling installment now.

This is one of my favourite series and it was great to find out how Jenna ended up in Black Rock Falls.
Her last case before becoming Sherriff was demanding and her life was in danger every day.
Trying to find out information on a drug cartel whilst working under cover is never easy, but being married to one of them makes it hard to escape.
Jenna was beaten and saw some horrific sights and now will never stand by if a woman or man is being abused by their partner.
It was great to read about her first few weeks in Boavk Rock Falls and see how it all came about and meeting the people I’ve come to love hearing about for the first time.
A great back story which shows what a strong woman Jenna is.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

(4.5) Thoroughly enjoyed getting to see how Jenna came to Black Rock Falls. I love this series and it has some of the creepiest criminals hiding in plain sight so to speak, looking like your neighbor. To see how Jenna came to be fit in 100% of Book 1, with the acting sheriff, the fireman, the mayor, it all connected. What she endured beforehand was, well like Kane said. I can't believe you did that, lived that and the DEA approved it. Another fact of sacrifice one for a group. Her hesitation when it came time to decide on her future. She did it, she was there, she helped take them down, and now you want to remover her existence. Well done. And Rowley, yes we meet Rowley for the first time and certainly turned my thoughts around there. Anyone else want to yell *hold on, you will have a fantasist medical examiner soon *, or something to that effect? I am soooo looking forward to Pray For Mercy. We now have the back ground for both Kane and Jenna, we can move forward and strengthen their relationship as they deal with psycho after psycho. Thank you for the arc, I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.

Such a wonderful read! I find it to be a bold move to tell the back story of one of the main characters as a novella instead of telling it in a novel as part of the series. This novella focuses solely on telling the story about who Jenna Alton was, or who she originally was when se was... undercover. She is not proud of who she was, but she had to do it. She is not supposed to reveal the truth to anyone, but she does.

Superbly written, highly entertaining, and a thoroughly enjoyable read!

This was a really good, fast read. I liked learning about the events that led Jenna to where she currently finds herself and what she went through. The back story provides a lot of insight into her character.

Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book before publication.

I'm flip-flopping like a dead fish between a 2.5 and a 3... So take that as you will. Full disclaimer: I have never read any other book in this series, and this is book #14. It is the prequel to one of the main characters, so I didn't feel like I was missing any information.

THE PLOT

Jenna wasn't always Jenna. This novel reflects on who she was, where it all started, and her journey to become who she is today.

MY OPINION

This is a brisk read; it's only 187 pages so you can power through it very quickly. And boy does it move quickly.

See, I'm a finicky reviewer and I know it. I don't like books that drag on, but I don't like books that move at lightning-speed where I feel like an unbalanced toddler running down the beach about to face-plant at any moment. I need that sweet spot, and it's elusive. This book was TOO fast. I was that unbalanced toddler... just propelling forward on pure momentum. No time to really think, feel, react, or understand what I was doing.

The long paragraphs and chapters are stuffed... nay, overflowing with action. One second Jenna is a trophy wife, and the next second she's moved on, and then two paragraphs later she's moved on even further. The amount of stuff that happens in one thicc ass chapter doesn't give you any time to digest what you just read and really FEEL anything or create a suspenseful atmosphere because the resolution is right after the period. You're just being shoved along to the next (what I would consider) pivotal scene, but it doesn't feel pivotal because three lines later, something else crazy is happening. Do you catch my drift?

Most times I feel like a plot is overstretched to fit the "typical" length of a novel, but in this case, I think the book should've been double the pages so the author could explore the events and create some emotional impact. There were a lot of cool storylines going on, but once again, the bullet-train pace of the book didn't give me any time to connect with what was happening.

My last complaint is the writing quality. This is my first D.K. Hood book, so I don't know if this is the norm, or if it's a result of cramming as much info as possible in less than 200 pages. I hope it's the latter. There was no depth to the writing and it was very "here's what's happening" (does that make sense)?

After writing this all out, I think my 3 stars is generous. It's more like a 2 star read. But I'll toss this an extra star based on the multitude of interesting storylines (albeit briefly) touched upon and the fact D.K. Hood can get to the mf point faster than I can take advantage of a 50% off sale.

PROS AND CONS

Pros: Lots of interesting storylines... You could write an entire novel about each one
Cons: Pace makes your head spin and it's hard to "get into" the book because you have no time to digest what you just read and build any anticipation or suspense. Writing quality was bleh but I think that's due to the extreme pacing of this book.

This book was just the backstory I didn’t know I was missing out on until I read it. I love Jenna and although I was intrigued about her history, it was always a secret, locked away in a classified file until one morning she decides to tell Kane.

I loved getting to know Jenna before Jenna. Man, it was not easy and what she went through was tough to read. How she is cut off from everyone and the pain she suffered. However, the threat over her head is very real.

This novella helps us see Jenna in a fuller light. We know where she has come from, so although her behaviour towards Kane really peeved me in Fallen Angel, I can relate now to why she’s like that.

It was also interesting to read her initial thoughts of Black Rock Falls and her new home at the Ranch. The first case as acting Sheriff hit her in an instant and it got personal quick. All this lead up to when she met Kane and it made me love Rowley all over again. It was fascinating. I will say it time and time again, Jenna needs a proper break!! Some sun, a drink and just the sounds of the sea.

I devoured this book in 2 sittings because like always Ms Hood writing just has me hooked. Plus when you see older names come up, knowing what you do now, well you just want to scream. One from excitement and one to get Jenna out of there!!

I can’t wait to go and read Kane’s back story (yes I am behind) and I think a story of Wolfe would just finish it off!

This is one of my favourite series and it’s good to discover more about Jenna’s previous life and how her experiences shaped who She is now. It’s fast paced and gripping.

Good background & what a start to life in Black Rock Falls!🏞

This prequel struck me as a bit less thrillride than the main books in the series. It was good to learn about the two-year-long undercover case that put an end to her DEA career and made way for the series lead character's phoenix-like resurrection as Jenna Alton, candidate for sheriff in Black Rock Falls, Montana.

Jenny's transition to life in Montana goes from smooth sailing to a first day on the job that reveals this perfect community she's joined has a darker side and some of the locals are not joining her fan club! There's danger and action but this story is shorter and just did not have the intensity of all of those serial killer cases Jenna and Dave encounter in the rest of the series.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

This was a very riveting story about an undercover FBI agent and the links she would go to shut down a drug and child trafficking ring. After 2 years and a price on her head what will she do now? Will she find a life in a small town? Will being sheriff be enough?
Thank you netgalley for complimentary copy.
Very enjoyable read.

Oh my goodness, I feel totally wrung out after reading this enthralling, compelling and horrifying book detailing Jenna's backstory. I've long wanted to know what lead her to Black Rock Falls and to becoming the woman we know and love. Her past was even more traumatising and heartbreaking than anything I could have imagined and how she has managed to emerge so strong and resilient is what makes her the compulsive character she is. It certainly makes me want her and Dave to have their happy every after! No two people can have endured what they have and yet they've retained their humanity and compassion. D. K. Hood is an incomparable and undisputed queen of the thriller!
