I loved everything about this book and I loved even more that I got to read it to my daughter. The younger reader in me wishes she had something like this growing up. To see myself in a book and my hair would have given me the confidence I didn't realize I needed back then. Love this time 1000. It will be in my future classroom and I can't wait to own a physical copyfor my personal library

Definitely not the best title they could've chosen......but it was a great little storyline about loving your hair just the way it is.

I loved the illustrations in this book. They are fun and bright, and show off the fun diverse beauty of this little girl’s hair as she celebrates the different things that it can do.

The text is set up to rhyme, and was, for me, just okay. I’m also pro having books that celebrate a different perspective of beauty, but I’ve read books that do so with stronger texts.

Overall a fun title for collections that want to celebrate Beauty in all of its forms and worth it for the illustrations imo.

This book is empowering, sweet, and beautifully illustrated. I feel like the title could have been ‘Mya’s Magical Hair’. Mya shows us that her hair can do magic tricks, it can shrink, and it can be straightened out, it can be styled in so many ways; braids, twists, puffs or fro’s and she looks good in those styles too. I love how the author-illustrator team captured Mya rocking a new hairdo on every page. I believe this book might serve as hairstyle inspiration for kids who want to recreate Mya’s hairstyles. Overall, this book celebrates the majesty of African Hair, a welcome addition to the growing list of picture books that celebrate Black Joy.

A children's picture book about the beauty of hair. The main character tries out many different hairstyles throughout these pages. An important book for children who will see themselves reflected in the characters! A recommended purchase for libraries/schools everywhere.

If you've read Hair Love, you're going to enjoy reading Shrinkage. This book is a sweet, and beautifully illustrated, book about a young girl and her magical hair. She styles her hair in a myriad of ways that show that her hair is magic. Great for all kids, but as a curly haired (white) mom with a curly hair (white) daughter, we especially loved reading it. As my daughter and I read the book, we talked about which hairstyles would work on our hair, and which wouldn't, and about how amazing curly hair is.

While I think this book is beautifully illustrated, there wasn't much plot, so while we enjoyed it, it wasn't one that was requested for a reread. 3.5 stars for the topic and the illustrations though!

I was provided an ARC copy of this book through Netgalley. My thanks to the publisher and the author for providing it to me.

Perfect to kids to read and remind them of how beautiful their hair is no matter what state or style it's currently in.

Thank you to the author, BooksGoSocial, and NetGalley for providing me with an e-arc to review.

I was looking around for books in the children's section so I could find a Christmas gift for a friend's child, and this did not disappoint! I think this is a great book for little girls and boys that represent them - super cute illustrations too!

Hair is magic!

Loved this book & so did my kids. I have three young girls who are mixed heritage (both parents mixed) so they each have varying curl types. They won't see anyone quiet like themselves represented in books & on TV. Yet books like Shrinkage really celebrate all that's different about their hair.
The pictures are stunning and we have re read many times so far.
The ones who should really read this book are the kids that are represented in mainstream media. Our kids get so many questions about their hair, as I did growing up in the UK in the 1980s. They shouldn't have to answer. Having all children exposed to differences via books is a great way to educate them. Books like these should be compulsory in school libraries.
Also provided a great teaching moment for one of my kids, when her sister left the house with shoulder length hair, but by the evening it was around her ears. Shrinkage is real folks!

What a cute story! Many young girls would be able to relate to all the different ways their hair can look, as shown in this book. I like how it normalizes the differences in hair.

Such a positive message and very pretty art. The author is always good with her rhymes, and it made the story flow nicely.

Working as a teacher in a multi-cultural and extremely diverse setting has been eye opening. Representation matters and books such as Shrinkage are needed more than ever.
We are all beautiful and we need to teach our children to love themselves and everything about themselves, from the tip of their toes to the top of their heads.
Beautifully illustrated book.

Shrinkage is an illustrated picture book. It's about a curly-haired girl, Mya explaining the magic of her hair. The illustrations are very cute. The positive attitude of Mya shows us "to love the way you are!"
Children will love reading it.

Shrinkage is a wonderful book. The illustrations are absolutely stunning and really showcased all the natural hairstyles that black people can have.

I know I’m not the right audience to really speak about how important this book is to young black children, but this was a wonderful book for me to help introduce different hair and culture to a young child and she was utterly fascinated by all the different ways that the young girl in the story could do her hair.

A beautiful story about a young girl loving her hair. A great story to show little girls with afro hair the different styles it can be and how to love their hair. Great for any collection.

A beautifully illustrated book for young girls to love their hair! The text is simple, and it delivers its message straight to the reader —“(…) this hair of mine can truly do magic.” I truly recommend this.

I enjoyed this book, the art style is beautiful and I liked how each panel stood out and was unique in it's own way. Although the message and theme of this book is really important, particularly for young black girls. Unlike another of her books 'Curves Like Mine', this book for me didn't feel like it had a proper storyline. It was just a girl telling us about her hair, why her hair is magic, and the different styles she can put her hair into. Which is why I overall rated this book 3.5 stars
