Mi Cocina by Rick Martinez is a love note to the Mexican Kitchen! Martinez weaves cultural explanations between recipes and paints a full picture of Mexico. As a fan of Mexican cuisine, I was particularly excited to get my hands on this book. Every recipe looks delicious and the recipes brilliantly describe to be easy to follow. It is easy to see the fingerprints of Martinez on every page of this cookbook. One of my absolute favorite foods I have ever eaten is the Oaxacan Tlayuda and I am always delighted when I chance upon a recipe for it, which is quite rare. Martinez includes a Tlayuda recipe in his Oaxaca section and I hope everyone tries this simple and delicious street food! It will be a treasure to have in anyone's library or kitchen! A well deserved five stars, happy cooking!

Rick Martinez takes you through Mexico and the different tastes of their food. These recipes the ingredients are different than some of the ones that my wife's family uses when they make them. I do already use the seasonings from Mexico but now I will try some of these just to change a few times. some of these looked really good. everything about this book is wonderful and worth the read.

Wonderful! Filled with pretty pictures and personal anecdotes. I loved that it was broken up by regions and information about different dishes and Martinez's journey traveling through Mexico. I bit time consuming but easy to follow and I liked that it also included measurements by weight. I wanted to try every recipe and although I haven't, everything I did try was truly delicious.

BEAUTIFUL! From the photography to the recipes to the stories inside. I’ve never been interested in Mexican cooking until now. The photos in particular made me desperate to book a trip there ASAP so I can finally eat what I’ve been reading about.

Finally, Rick Martinez has blessed us with his very own cookbook! Mi Cocina, though long-awaited, is a masterpiece. Every page, every recipe is a feast for the eyes, mouth and stomach. It is easy to feel the love put into it.

I love the design and style of this cookbook, and the photographs are beautiful! I really like Martínez' writing and the recipes sound delicious. The only downside of it is that the recipes are not necessarily for the average home cook as some of the ingredients may take some hunting down. Other than that, the book is fabulous!

Rick Martinez’s Mi Covina is remarkable. The pictures are a feast for the eyes and I can’t state enough how gorgeous this cookbook is. It makes me want to travel to Mexico and devour everything. Outstanding .

I love how heartfelt this cookbook is. The author's story is a hero's journey of sorts, but a very contemporary American one of finding his way as a Mexican-American coming of age and returning to his roots. The photography and the author's warm charisma also elevate this book beyond being just a cookbook of recipes. But lets talk about the recipes. They're good. Solidly written, easy to follow, delicious results, and such a gorgeous variety showcasing the regional differences of Mexican cuisine. There is so much love and respect in this cookbook - love for food, love for life, love for self, respect for oneself, and cultural respect. It leaves you feeling happy.

The stories, pictures and overall effort that has been poured into this book makes it an amazing and more than enjoyable read. The recipes are easy to follow, and produce the best tasting Mexican food I have ever made at home. Many recipes that we have tried will be entering our regular rotation here on our table, All the recipes we have tried seem to be well practiced, and produce outstanding results. Thank you!

If you love food (and especially Mexican food) as much as me, not to mention bright bursts of color that makes this as fun as drinking an ice cold, heavy on the tequila margarita, this is the book for you! With a map that shows the homegrown regions that have made these cultural recipes a phenomenon, along with precious family photos from the chef himself, this one has food, culture, history, and beautiful photographs. My personal favorite? The section of the book dedicated to Dia De Los Muertos. This one has it all and will have the fiesta starting before you’ve even hit the grocery store.

A must-have Mexican cookbook for your cookbook library. I grew up in San Diego, just a stone's throw from Tijuana, and primarily ate Mexican (yet vegetarian) food for most of my teens and twenties. This cookbook takes me back to my college and early work years, and inspires me to get back into the kitchen and make flavorful, authentic Mexican dishes for my friends here in Seattle.

Mi Cocina: Recipes and Rapture from My Kitchen in Mexico is part travel guide, part cookbook. The author has separated out the finished dishes by region, which is an interesting approach. There is a good blend of photographs, ones which show the beautiful vistas, the colorful produce, and some of the finished dishes. The opening section is about the basics, from how to choose and use dried chilies, to different tortillas, staple ingredients, and essentials to have to the pantry.

Listed below are the sections, with some of the standout recipes. The names of the recipes are listed in both English and Spanish in the cookbook.

El Bajío and Central Mexico: Spicy-Sweet Chipotle Roast Chicken with Onion and Pineapple; Fresh Pork Sausage with Spinach, Poblano, and Pumpkin Seeds

Oaxaca and the South Pacific Coast: Hearty Hominy and Chicken Stew with Poblano, Tomatillo, and Pumpkin Seeds; Toasted Corn Turnovers Filled with Shredded Chicken and Mole

Yucatán Peninsula: Orange and Lime Marinated Grilled Pork; Grapefruit, Lime and Orange Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder; Chicken and Pork Meatball Stew with Chiles, Tomatoes, and Cloves

El Golfo Central: Chicken Stew; Beef Stew with Green Peppers, Sweet Potatoes, and Plantains

El Norte - The Northern States: Carne Asada; Fried Corn Tortillas Filled with Potatoes, Chorizo, Refried Beans, and Steak; Garlic and Lime Pork Sandwiches with Salsa and Pickled Jalapeños

Pacifico Central: Butterflied Shrimp with Avocado, Cucumber, and Lime with Serrano Salsa

Baja - California Peninsula: Lobster Burritos with Garlic Butter, Rice and Beans

Mi Cocina includes many excellent recipes, but gets a little bogged down in all of the regional information. Those looking for an overall view of Mexico will enjoy this cookbook.

I was very excited for this book because I am a huge fan of Mexican food but oddly found myself struggling to really like it. As far as things go, the book is absolutely stunning. It is full of beautiful pictures of the recipes, lots of colours, interesting facts about the recipes, and much more. It’s also divided region of Mexico which I found really wonderful. The recipes also boast a lot of specific ingredient details to take away some of the guesswork and other tips to make it clear which is awesome. My problem with the book however is that it doesn’t necessarily meet my needs as just an everyday cook. The recipes are specific and very authentic, but for that reason, they are also not super accessible. They often require a lot of ingredients I can’t easily find in Canada and take a lot of time. I would say the recipes in this book are a true labour of love, and while that is nice for some people, unfortunately for me, it makes this book very hard to cook from.

This book is not bad by any means, but it is definitely made for a very particular kind of cook. So, if you love authentic Mexican food, have the time to make these things, and have access to the ingredients needed, this book would be perfect for you. That said, if you are just a home cook looking to get dinner on the table, I would probably recommend looking elsewhere sadly.

Special thanks to the publishers and netgalley for an online copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Disclaimer.. I already had quite a few Mexican themed cookbooks.. and didnt really expect to purchase this one.. but after browsing it.. I purchased immediately!

What sets this apart, is that its not a tex mex, or just general mexican cookery book.. it dives deep into Mexico and has chapters based on different regions... Norteno vs Yucatan are like completely different sides of the coin for example.. This book provides authentic 'best of' dishes from each region. The graphic design and photography is also top notch.

In trying to not buy anymore cookbooks... once I browsed this one..I failed miserably! Cant wait to take a deep dive into it!

Updated.. I did finally cook a recipe.. and it was a miserable fail. There was obiviously an error in it. It called for 8 poblanos, or 2.25 pounds of poblanos. 8 Poblanos actually weighed about 1.25 pounds.. so do I go by the weight or number? I went by weight.. big mistake.. not enough liquid in recipe... the recipe ONLY tasted of slimy poblano peppers.. i wasted $50 on ingredients.. what a dissapointment

If you are looking for an authentic collection of Mexican recipes, Mi Cocina is a fantastic cookbook to try. The author has gone on an expedition through Mexico to learn more about his culture and its recipes. There are so many interesting and the recipes are very easy to follow with some stunning images to accompany them. While some of the ingredients might be a bit hard to source for some, they will be well worth it. Anyone who enjoys learning about other cultures and authentic cuisine will find this a must-have book in their collection.

This is the first book by chef Rick Martinez, and what a great book that is! It truly feels like a love letter to Mexico, as he traveled to many different parts of country, and in the book he talks about the culture, the food and shares personal stories. It is very well written, and the photography in this book is truly beautiful! I really appreciate the fact that we get an overview of the recipes at the beginning of each chapter (each region chef Martinez visited), so this makes it easier to navigate through the recipes. I also really like that the measurements in the recipes are written both in weight and volume, making every reader's life easier. The only thing that I don't love about this book is that it is really difficult to find many ingredients included in the recipes in my country, and some of them can be quite expensive, but of course this can be different for everyone. depending on where they live. All in all I think that it's a really great book and would make a great gift for people passionate about cooking. Thank you to NetGalley and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press for providing me with an advanced reader copy.

The pictures in this book are stunning! So vibrant and beautiful! There are quite a few recipes that I'm exited to try. I will say the only thing I struggled with is I haven't heard of some of the ingredients and I don't thing some are found in just the local grocery store. But I'd definitely like to try finding them and giving some of these recipes a try.

The MOST BEAUTIFUL cookbook - vibrant colors, local scenes, enticing recipes. Would make a lovely display on a coffee table or book shelf, but you'll use it so much you might need multiple copies!
