This book is on the right side of autistic history and has truly changed things for the lot of us. So many things I have been thinking, but unable to put words to, are articulated well here. The autistic community talks about this on TikTok frequently.

I do believe Devon's "Unmasking Autism" is FOR autistic people. Non-autistic people MAY learn a little bit, but this book? It's FOR autistic people. If you're not autistic and don't like it, it's because it's not for you.

As a parent of an autistic child, I always want to read more about autism and become more educated. “Unmasking Autism” did a great job with including both research and personal accounts. I understand that I will never share the same experiences or fully understand the autistic experience, but I will always do my best to listen and research what it is like. I will recommend this book to others.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of “Unmasking Autism” by Devon Price.

Gosh, I loved this book! I've recommended it to multiple people since reading it, and have particularly been suggesting they listen to the audiobook. This book was super educational while also being very personal; rather than reading a textbook, it was like sitting down for coffee with a friend.

Devon Price's Unmasking Autism is an eye-opening and revolutionary book about the many ways that autism exists in our community. I found this books to be written with great compassion and thoroughness for the human condition and for those that are neurodivergent. I suspect that this books is timely in an era where acceptance is very much needed to heal the wounds that rejection has given neurodivergent people in our society. The author has even gone one step further and provides guidance on how to start deconstructing the masks that we have built to survive. I wish I had this book when I was a kid.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this books for review.

This is a really thoughtfully organized and approachable book on the modern world of Autism. I really appreciate how Devon Price looks at how the public and the psychological world's perspectives on Autism have changed, and how far they still have to go. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is or thinks they might be Autistic, as well as folks with Autistic loved ones they'd like to learn how to better support.

It is a beautifully written manifesto that supports autistic unmasking (also applicable to neurotypicals) and provides resources, personal stories, and a great conversation about what it means to be autistic in an allistic world.

Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this book my my honest opinion.

Wow. This book is absolutely amazing. As a mom with an autistic son, it shined a whole new light onto my personal situation in more ways than one. It gave pointers on how to help my little one and it gave some insight into what’s going on in my own brain: it has me wondering if I was misdiagnosed as a child and if I’m one of those she’s mentioned that has slipped under the radar.

Very insightful read. Something everyone should read. A book for every bookshelf.

5 stars. If I could give more I would.

Although I am not the intended audience for this book, I felt it so necessary and important for me to read. The author shined a spotlight into their life and the life of others they knew and it really gave me an insider perspective on how autistic people have to handle daily challenges. While I understand the authors intent, my only critique would be that the parts on universal healthcare, basic wage and the justice system were not necessary for this book. I agree with the author on all topics, however those sections seemed more about the system and not the individual in regards to the system so they felt a bit out of place.

There is a lot of good information here given in an easy to digest format. I think everyone would benefit greatly from reading this. There are even a few activities to work through that could help a person work through their own autism journey.

Wow, what an incredible book. I've only discovered I was autistic the last year and one night I went searching for books about it, skeptical I would find anything other than books for moms with autistic children. My delight when Unmasking Autism showed up here on Netgalley, written by Devon Price-- the author whose previous book radically changed the way I treated myself and viewed my relationship to productivity. I knew immediately that I needed to read this book and I am so thankful that I found it when I did. It was through many tears and revelations that I finished it, finally feeling seen and understood as a queer autistic, this book has helped me make sense of and make peace with my own brain. I will pass this book on to my wife, and to my friends. I will recommend it probably for many, many years to come. Devon Price has officially become an auto-buy author for me.

** Thanks to NetGalley, Devon Price, and Rodale Inc. for this ARC **

Unmasking Autism by Devon Price was fascinating! I'm a psychotherapist in Chicago and I have already recommended this book to many clients looking to unlearn the ways in which a neurotypical way of being has been forced upon them. Unmasking Autism looks at the ways in which autistic folks, especially those who are women, TGNC, or people of color, have been forced to adapt shallow masks to move through a neurotypical world, often at the cost of their mental health. Price guides the reader through considering whether or not continuing to mask their authentic self is the best decision for them. I enjoyed this a lot and think it is a must-read for any other mental health clinicians.

Unmasking Autism is a very valuable #OwnVoices book about “masking” Autism and those who pass as neurotypical to conform to societal norms. Dr. Devon Price shares personal experiences, social science research, historic beliefs, and experiences of others who have masked/learned to unmask their Autism in order to feel free to be themselves.

This book was an ah-ha moment for me personally, and I will be buying a copy to reference and would definitely recommend it for literally everyone to read! Whether you are on the spectrum yourself, suspect that you are or know someone who is, just pick this up and read it.

Thank you to Dr. Devon Price for dedicating your time and research to this topic. This is a fantastic resource. Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book looks at a concept called masking and how it relates to individuals who have autism or suspect they have autism. How these people are pressured, taught, or made to conform/ hide the fact they have autism. It looks at many topics, situations, and societal platforms, where people with autism are negatively affected. It also offers resources, examples, and tips to individuals who are struggling and looking for outside help.
I found several topics in this book informative, and some were surprising. Other areas I was already familiar with but lacked the knowledge on how masking affects these topics as well. It included what masking is for individuals with autism and how people with autism in these situations are pressured to suppress their needs in order to conform to social norms and values and how it is hurting them. It was very eye-opening at times. I Like how it offers several resources and examples of how and when masking is happening and offers steps that can be taken to stop masking. This book is definitely about bringing awareness to what masking is and how not only can people educate themselves about this concept, but changes that can be made in our society such as in the medical fields, law enforcement, and workforce to name a few that were included in this book. Overall, I found it informative, a good resource on the topic and it brought to the surface a concept people are not aware of.
I received an advanced ebook, via Netgalley. This review is my own honest opinion.

This book is well-researched and presented in an engaging voice. It was hard to put down. As an autistic adult, I found it very validating to read that many of my own experiences are common for other autistics. The book ends with Dr. Price’s appeals for changes in workplace and societal values that will make the world more inclusive and neurodivergent-friendly. It’s my hope that these suggested changes so one day happen.

I found this book to be insightful. I am constantly wanting to expand my knowledge on this topic. As a mother with a son on the spectrum, it is important for me to learn as I go.

I have been a fan of Devon Price’s work since Laziness Does Not Exist. Unmasking Autism is just another point in their favor. This time, Price has created a book on Autism for the Autistic community (though allistics will certainly benefit from this title). This book breaks down the autism stereotype we all grew up with, explains what autism *really* is, and explores the myriad of ways that this neurodivergency can present itself. It’s a valuable work, and I hope it will aide society in embracing the changing view of autism.

I picked Unmasking Autism by Devon Price to give myself a broader insight into the neurodiversity movement happening in autism but I trudged to finish this book in order to complete my review. This book mostly stayed on the topic of how LGBTQ seems to almost have a symbiotic relationship with autism and how they are under diagnosed or have slipped through the cracks. Maybe it was my expectation from the title that threw me off, but I expected less about gender issues and more about autism per say. I don’t see this book helping anyone get a better grasp of autism. I do however see a reader coming off believing that almost all autistic individuals have gender identification issues and tend to belong under the LGBTQ umbrella, and I doubt that to be factual. I will have to do my own research on that one. This review was given on the ARC copy received from the Publisher via NetGalley in return for my honest opinion.
