Batter Off Dead is the 10th book in Maddie Day's Country Store Mysteries. I have read all ten books in the series throughout the last four months, and I've finished several in her other series too. I'm always impressed with how easily immersed I am in her fictional world; this one was no exception. Robbie's good friend, Buck Bird - the local detective, introduces her to his father, a blind knitter whose wife was murdered years ago. Shortly after meeting him, the woman he'd been sitting next to was found dead, in the exact same manner as Buck's mother. What is the connection?

Robbie delves into an array of clues, ranging from gambling rings to dark knitting circles! Even the county/state police are asking for her help this time... plus she gets to know her local retirement / assisted living home neighbors. All the charms are present, the mystery is clever, and the new characters are memorable. The series is definitely one my favorites, and it's so comforting to visit with all the residents of South Lick, even the not so nice ones! I am thrilled to be caught up, recommend this one, and now that I'm current on all Maddie Day books, I might have to start reading books the author's written under her pseudonym, Edith Maxwell (or is that her real name!!!).

My first book by this author but I still enjoyed it despite it being the tenth book in the series. It was easy to get to know all the characters and to understand their relationships.

Robbie Jordan owns Pans 'N Pancakes which sounds like a very interesting store. There is a small but very busy restaurant attached to a shop which sells heritage kitchen ware. During the course of the book we get to see just how much work goes on in such a business and also share in some really delicious sounding food.

I liked Robbie's relationship with her new husband, Abe, and enjoyed all the other fun characters. The mystery is extra interesting given that it involves a cold case and a copy cat new murder. I found it all very entertaining and will read more by this author.

Recently wed Robbie and Abe are enjoying a night out watching the town's firework show. But the night ends in tragedy when one of the older residents in town is murdered. Amateur sleuth Robbie has her hands full trying to help solve this mystery that may have ties to the past.

So many fun and interesting twists and turns in this intriguing cozy mystery. They really kept me guessing until the end. I loved visiting with Robbie, Abe, Officer Buck Bird, and all the various residents of South Lick. Oh, and all the recipes at the end sound easy and delicious.

Many thanks to Kensington Cozies and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.

Batter Off Dead is book #10 in the Country Store Mystery series by Maddie Day.

Robbie and her husband were watching fireworks at a park when a woman is murdered. Robbie tries to untangle the secrets that led to the murder.

It was good to see Robbie starting her married life. This mystery was like a tangled ball of yarn, you get one knot undone and there is another. The investigation involves digging into the past looking at other crimes. I like all the generations represented in the story.

Thank you to the author, Kensington, and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Batter Off Dead is the tenth book in the A Country Store Mystery series by Maddie Day.

Robby and Abe are settling in well to married life. Abe’s son is spending time with his grandparents, and both are looking forward to having him home.

South Lick has weekly fireworks during the summer, and Robbie and Abe have decided to attend this Friday’s show.
Shortly after setting up their chairs, Lt. Buck Bird stops by and asks if they would like to meet his father, unaware that he was alive and living so close. They meet Mr. Bird, his lady friend, Vi, and some other ladies from the Jupiter Springs Assisted Living place who seem to be enjoying their time knitting.

Shortly after the fireworks end, there is a call for help from a man. Robbie and Abe head over to where the call came from and find that Vi is dead. It was discovered that Vi died from a tiny puncture wound to her neck, possibly from a knitting needle. Buck will share that his mother died from similar circumstances and still hasn’t been learned who killed her.

Robbie, having recently gotten married, the last thing Robbie wants to do is to get involved in another murder investigation. But since Vi’s death touches Bird’s father’s life, she wants to get closure for Mr. Bird. Robbie will soon learn that Vi and a couple of the other women at the fireworks were members of a club, the Stitch and Bitch, and she will find out that Bird’s mother was also a member of the club. Robbie soon discovers that the club might have been involved in some of the club's illegal activities. She needs to learn more about these activities and who might want to keep them secret.

I always enjoy my visits to South Lick. The residents are all interesting and are always interested in helping Robbie in any way they can. I would be pleased to call them my friends. The book is well-written and plotted, and moves at a good pace. There are plenty of red herrings that kept me guessing until the killer was revealed.

There are also delicious-sounding recipes included in the book.

I’m looking forward to the next book in this exciting series.

These mysteries make me want breakfast so freaking badly - I always come away hungry! I enjoyed the latest installment in the Country Store mysteries and I like that the author circled back to something mentioned in a prior book and turned it into a whodunit.

Robbie Jordan's life is running smoothly. She and new husband Abe are settling into married life and Robbie's restaurant, Pans and Pancakes, is doing very well. It's a steamy summer in South Lick and the town is gathered to watch the weekly fireworks. Unfortunately, a senior citizen winds up dead, clearly the victim of foul play. Robbie becomes involved as she gets to know the players. This case ties into an old cold case murder that happened under the same circumstances. Deceit and intrigue ensue!

The recipes in these stories are always mouthwatering. I like that Robbie is an amateur sleuth yet it does not seem out of place as her restaurant is essentially the town water cooler and she hears lots of things. She also seems to know nearly everyone in town and that makes her questions less awkward. I love the author's use of jargon and accents in her dialogue, I am able to hear the change in tonality. I love these books and look forward to more in the series!

My fifth in this series although it is the tenth instalment, Robbie Jordan, the owner of Pans 'N Pancakes makes a great amateur sleuth. She gets involved when a woman from Jupiter Springs Assisted Living residence is found dead after watching a firework display with her friends from the knitting circle.

Nefariousness lurks in this charming tale set in South Lick, Indiana. Robbie is married to handsome and charming Abe O'Neill. She is a methodical, determined and single-minded protagonist and you get a real sense of place and family from her restaurant/ diner which is one of her main focuses. The supporting cast is a real asset to the series including the regular customers and employee Danna Beedle. The scrumptious sounding dishes make you happy to find some of the recipes listed at the back of the book. Humorous and endearing, I shall be continuing with this series and hope to read a few of the earlier instalments while I wait for book eleven to be released. With its compelling plot, drama aplenty, great bunch of characters, mountains of mayhem as well as a cold case added to the mix, this one is very highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Batter Off Dead” is the 10th book in Maddie Day's enjoyable Country Store Mystery series. Every book in this series is a winner and this installment is no different; visits with the Pans N' Pancakes staff, Robbie, Abe, and friends feel like going home. I appreciate a mystery that is always interesting and complex. What keeps me returning to this series are the friendships, the cozy small town feels and the satisfied feeling when the mystery is concluded. One of my favorite cozy mystery series.

Robbie, the owner of Pans ‘N Pancakes in Indiana, returns with another exciting murder mystery. Robbie’s informal investigation is mixed with the running of her restaurant and her new life as a married woman. I love the characters in this series along with the setting. This murder involves a murder at the nightly fireworks which repeats an unsolved murder that happened years before. Great mystery.

To steal a phrase from BATTER OFF DEAD, this book by Maddie Day suits me even “better than gravy on biscuits.” I was most happy to reunite with Robbie and the gang from Pans ’n Pancakes, happily settling in for fireworks, connecting with the knitters in the group, as I also have done much knitting at public events, but then . . . well, it wouldn’t be a terrible spoiler, since it happens so early on, but let’s just say tragedy ensues. The subsequent twists and turns, clues and misdirections, teamwork and threats, all make for a very dramatic ride, including Robbie’s athletic bike rides. Be prepared to get nothing else done, and have food on hand as it’s an appetizing adventure, but one you might not want to put down even for food prep. Recipes at the end might just inspire some cooking, for example, the Yankerdoodle cookies, a variation of snickerdoodles, my favorite lesson from Home Ec. class.
Life lesson: a pair of rude customers walk out, and Robbie shrugs it off because her shop is "full of people eager to be pleased." So much better to focus on those people. ;-)
There’s just a short wait for publication on 2/22/22 (2’s day), which allows a little time for catching up on earlier books in the series.

Robbie and her new husband Abe O’Neill are enjoying a summer evening in the park enjoying some fireworks. In attendance are senior residents from Jupiter Springs Assisted Living including Roy Bird, father of the town’s Police Lieutenant Buck Bird. Despite his blindness, Roy is a member of his group home’s knitting circle, with his girlfriend, Vi. But when the lightshow ends, she is found dead with a puncture wound in her neck. The poor woman’s death reminds Buck of his mother’s unsolved homicide. Robbie is determined to help solve the case. But someone will stop at nothing to end Robbie’s investigation.
This was a very good culinary cozy mystery. I love reading about all of Robbie’s adventures and the food that she creates at her pancake house. The plot was puzzling, and I was surprised by the revelation of the culprit. I honestly became confused with the many different red herrings in the story. I had a hard time distinguishing one character from the other. I want to read the next one in this series. I received an advanced reader’s copy from NetGalley. This review is my honest opinion.

Robbie is the proprietor of a restaurant and country store in small-town Indiana. When someone is murdered at the town fireworks event, she becomes involved informally in the police investigation. (This book is part of a series which I hadn't read before, but I was able to read it as a stand-alone.) Could have the elderly woman's children have done it to get some much-needed money? Is her former business partner as shady as he seems? What about the members of the seemingly-innocuous Stitch and Bitch needlework group? A pleasant small town atmosphere and likable characters make this a good choice for cozy mystery readers. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Robbie and Abe are happily settling into married life and so a night out at the fireworks seems just delightful until....Vi is found murdered with a knitting needle! Cozy fans know there's going to be more to the senior citizen Vi than meets the eye but Day has thrown in a twist. Vi is the lady friend of Lt. Buck Bird and Vi's murder echoes that of Buck's mom years ago. Are the two murders linked? Is there a connection with the Stitch and Complain club? I've liked this series for the characters and the relationship between Robbie and Abe (so pleased they've finally made it to the altar). The mystery here is as good as always. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Fans will be happy but don't worry if you haven't read the earlier books- this will be fine as a standalone.

Batter Off Dead comes in as #10 in A Country Store Mystery series. I have been reading since the first book, and it is always a pleasure to return to South Lick, Indiana and Robbie’s country store. The restaurant and cookware store work well as a setting, and allow Robbie to interact with a wide variety of people. Her suspects often come to her during the course of a day serving breakfast and lunch.

In Batter Off Dead, we learn a great deal more about Buck, the second in command in South Lick Police Department. In past books, Robbie and Buck’s relationship revolves around the food Robbie served and the mystery/death under investigation. In this book we learn about Buck’s father and grandmother. We learn his mother was murdered when he was a boy. The reader learns Buck has a wife and grown kids. Buck becomes more than the caring but slightly comic good old boy policeman.

There are multiple layers to this mystery in which a woman, Vi, is murdered during a fireworks show in the heat of summer. There is the similar murder of Buck’s mother 39 years prior. There are shady business partners and a suspect craft group. Many of the suspects fall into the senior category and they have had years to hide secrets and motives. I enjoyed the mystery.

Robbie and Abe haven’t been married long, and I enjoy the way the author writes their relationship. Robbie is a caring and curious person. She is one of my favorite amateur sleuths. Robbie has learned to be careful and to keep the police informed. I hope for additions to this series, so I can continue my armchair travels to Indiana.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this book.

I really enjoy this series! The theme is fantastic, and the author does a great job of fleshing out the characters and the setting. The story was well-paced, and I had so much fun trying to solve the mystery. Maddie Day is one of my favorite cozy mystery authors, and this book did not disappoint!

Another terrific installment in the Country Store mystery series! A cold case seems to be linked to a current case and it is dredging up all sorts of memories when the cold case is that of the local sheriff's mother! Once again Robbie is prone to "overhearing" and flat out snooping to find answers to pass along to the authorities and it seems someone does not like it one bit! I love these characters and the northern Midwest feel that the infuses throughout the book via settings and vernacular. She weaves common day occurrences and issues throughout the story to tie them into reality while weaving delightfully entertaining mysteries throughout. I love how the author sprinkles the lives of the locals into the book so you feel more connected to everyone in town and not just the main characters. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!

Batter Off Dead” the 10th book in the Country Store Mystery series by Maddie Day. I just love this series!

Part-time sleuth Robbie Jordan must untangle the clues to find the killer of a knitting circle member... In South Lick, Indiana, fine foods and classic cookware can be found at Robbie Jordan’s Pans ’N Pancakes. Unfortunately, her country store also seems to stock up on murder…

I love the setting of South Lick, Indiana and I love Robbie and her staff at Pans N Pancakes they are like one big family. We learned more about Buck and what happened to his mother, and meet a bunch of seniors from Jupiter Springs assisted living. I loved how Robbie was so good with Grant, Simone, and Melissa.

There were enough twists to keep me intrigued and wanting to know how it ends. The plot and story were good and seemed to flow at a good pace.

I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a cozy filled with down home characters and a small town atmosphere.

I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Kensington and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

The teaser indicates that the latest in Maddie Day's A Country Store Mystery series will fill in some information about Buck, one of the central characters in the series. Buck's mother was murdered when he was a teen, and to date the murder is unsolved. Buck's blind father Grant is introduced as his current love interest is murdered in the exact same manner as Buck's mother. There are many suspects with opportunity and possible motive creating a high level of tension. Some reveals help clear the field, yet there still was an element of surprise for me. My one issue with the book is the abruptness of the ending. For something as monumental as the resolution of Buck's mother's murder the way the author dealt with it was just too soft and brief. I am a fan, however, and look forward to the possible start of Abe and Robbie's family.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I love this series, and this latest book did not disappoint.
While at a fireworks show with her husband, Abe, a woman is murdered. Robbie, of course, cannot help herself and starts to do some sleuthing . The list of suspects is ever changing, the motives are unique, and Robbie along with Buck and Oscar from the police department, are ever pressed to uncover who has committed this crime. When Robbie gets too close for the killer's comfort, she could be in danger once again.
I absolutely love the characters, even the new ones I met along this book, the plot, as always, is smooth and engaging. Already looking forward to the next book in the series.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
