Rhank you NetGalley for providing me with an arc of These Violent Skies by Arianne Zwartjes. I gave this book 3 stars. The first essays and collections of thought surrounding violence and refugees were well put together and thought provoking. I really enjoyed them. However I think after I had read two thirds of the book I felt some of the essays and opinions began to repeat themselves. The two main things that limited my review of this book is the fact that the title includes the idea of reckoning with queer identity but in reality this was a very minor part of the book and was mainly presented through the authors relationship with her wife, although it was thought provoking it was not as in depth as some other things discussed. As well as this, the essays on violence kept being linked back to dance as a creative outlet and I personally could not quite understand this as I have no experience with ballet and dancing so I cannot quite understand why everything keeps coming back to it.
