Hanna was a troubled teen going through a rebellious stage after her mother had died and she was forced to live with her overbearing strict father and his new wife. At the age of sixteen she decided to leave after a tragedy leaves her the gossip of their small town. Now fourteen years later estranged from her family, Hanna has her life somewhat together as she’s got a job, friends, and a social life. She’s even started dating after a horrible relationship ended. However, her world is turned upside down when she looks on a dark tourism site and sees a photo of her childhood home with the headlines saying a gruesome murder happened there. What’s even worse is that her dad, stepmother, and sister are all missing. With the alternating povs between Hanna and her sister Sasha this psychological thriller is captivating and smart. The Night They Vanished is a dark story with plenty of twists to keep in you interested. I really enjoyed this on and am thankful to Netgalley and Grand Central Pub for the arc to read for a honest review.

THIS BOOK WAS FANTASTIC! I am usually heavily critical of thrillers because I feel like sometimes the story goes all wacky or its too predictable or the ending just kind of falls apart.

That is NOT the case here. Vanessa Savage sets up an insane ride with twists and turns you won’t see coming. I also pride myself on being able to generally figure out what is going on before it is revealed and again, NOT the case here. This was a really enjoyable adventure to have gone on. I think I read this book collectively in about 6 hours (over the course of three days). If you love a good thriller, please check out this book when it releases in May.

This is my first book by Vanessa Savage and I liked her writing style. The chapters alternate between Sasha and Hanna and we’re written to build suspense. There were some points that weren't very believable and I felt angry at some of the poor choices made. I thought it was a good mystery involving family secrets and the damage that occurs from those closest to us. I appreciate the chance to read this book from NetGalley and the publishers.

Having loved The Woman in the Dark, I was thrilled to read Savage's new novel The Night they Disappeared. This book is just as good as the debut novel . The characters Savage writes are multilayered and flawed, but you can't help but feel like the may be people you know.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this Advance Reader Copy.

The Night They Vanished by Vanessa Savage is a thrilling mystery about an estranged daughter who realizes her family has suddenly disappeared. Then there’s a new blog post on her blind date’s website announcing their murders & obvious chaos ensues.
This is a book about more than just a psychological thriller, but also about the complexities of family dynamics & the imperfectness of human nature. It’s frustrating. It’s messy. It’s dark. They’re complicated, rough pasts that creep into the present.
I struggled with the parents’ choices & found it very frustrating to read. I did think it came together nicely at the end.
I enjoyed the dual point of view from the two sisters & the alternating timeline leading up to the disappearance. This book gets 3 stars from me!
The Night They Vanished comes out May 5, 2022!

Massive thanks to NetGalley & Grand Central Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Trigger warnings: This book mentions &/or contains violence, death, drugs, abuse, murder, rape & suicide.

Having read Vanessa Savage's previous books Woman in the Dark and the Woods I was anxiously waiting for her new book and The Night They Vanished did not disappoint.
The split narrative between Hanna and her sister tells the story of a long-held family secret that slowly reveals itself as the story progresses--and not wanting to spoil it I will say no more about the story itself.
The writing is spot-on in characterization and pacing and you will find yourself pulled in and moving along at a fast pace--each chapter pulling you into the next.
Fans of the author and the thriller/mystery genre should enjoy this book a lot.
Thank you to #Netgalley, #GrandCentralPublishing, and #VanessaSavage for the great read.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of The Night They Vanished by Venessa Savage. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to Netgalley and Grand Central Publishing for providing an ARC to review.

Events 14 years earlier sent teenage Hannah out into the world an emotional mess and blaming herself for a tragic event. But with time, she pulls herself out of her downward spiral. Just when things seem to be looking up, Hannah must confront the past to save those she left behind.

Wow. What rating to give this book? I'm conflicted since the writing style was well done. It kept me focused on the story and invested in Hannah and Sasha's stories. I liked the dual POV and the slight time difference between the two-story arcs. It was a unique way of creating suspense. The mix of the two timelines created tension without feeling like a flashback. The author also succeeded in having the characters deal with their emotional trauma. The focus on toxic relationships and how they shape a person was more complex than you find in most suspense novels.

Now for the negative. Without going into spoiler details, the final bad guy arcs felt unfinished. It lacked the natural transition that our other leads had when dealing with mental health. I do understand that the ending was something unexpected. However, I would have preferred everything wrapped up in a nice bow. I rated this as a 4 but would probably say it's closer to a 3.5. I rounded up because the writing was well done.

Wow. Just wow. This book was dark, compelling, and I literally had a hard time putting it down once things began to start falling into place. All in all it was a great read.

So, this is not a dark thriller with murders. No. It's a drama through and through. And it was slow in several places as well as repetitive. Not my cup of tea.

Hanna has barely spoken to her family (her father, stepmother Jen and sister Sasha) since the tragedy that rocked their lives fourteen years ago. The tragedy for which they held Hanna responsible. Then she sees her family home listed as the scene of a horrific crime on a dark tourism website. Number of victims: three. Date of crime: today. Frantic, Hanna tries to contact her family, only to find they have disappeared. To find them, Hanna will have to confront what happened all those years ago. And the person determined to make her pay for it . . .

This is my first book by Vanessa Savage and I loved her writing style immediately. The chapters alternate between Sasha and Hanna and they were done pretty well to build suspense. There were some points that weren't very believable and I felt angry at some of the dumb choices made. Overall I thought it was a good mystery involving family secrets, stalking and bullies. Hanna and Sasha also added some comic relief with their inner thoughts. I was cracking up at some points while also flipping pages to figure out what was going on.

2.5 stars

Overall this book was fine but I was really let down by how little the "dark tourism" aspect played into the plot. I was so excited reading the summary for this book and thought anything involving creepy, potentially haunted places where gruesome murders took place would be right up my alley. Unfortunately, the entire dark tourism website is just a minor plot point in the larger themes of the book and only acts to set up the central mystery. I think the use of a website and a computer hacker also seemed unnecessary and didn't quite fit with the rest of the book.

I usually love dual narrators especially combined with differing timelines but that didn't work for me in this book. I didn't really care about Sasha's side of the story and I felt like I had to push myself through so I could get to the chapters with Hanna's narration where the plot actually moved along.

The book was longer than it needed to be and a little repetitive. Ultimately, I think I would have enjoyed this one more if the plot summary lined up with the content of the book better. It's not a book about infamous murders, dark tourism and people disappearing. It's a domestic drama about family secrets, small towns and high school bullies.

Hanna has not talked to her family for a while, but one day she sees her families’ home is a scene of a terrible crime. She tries to get ahold of them but can’t and it seems like they have completely disappeared.
The best way to describe this book is potential, as in it had a lot of it. I loved the way it hinted at a big secrete throughout the book, but it started to drag on by the end. It was fast paced and at times kept me on my toes. The premise was a great idea and most of the time it was done right. The jumping between characters was not as smoothly as it could have been. Overall if you like drama this book might be a good fit for you.

This book kept me guessing who what the threat for about 80 % of the book which is substantial to me. The author creates characters that you change your mind several times on who you care about.

Psychological Thrillers are almost always touted as riveting and breathtaking, with convoluted twists readers won't see in advance, resulting in sleepless nights and missed phone calls. That'd be lovely, but it seems rare to me that a Psychological Thriller matches the hype. THE NIGHT THEY VANISHED by Vanessa Savage truly delivers all of the above. I read it in one session, I didn't figure everything out in advance, I was completely engrossed and unaware of my surroundings, and I cheered on the genuinely good characters as well as the multiple Feckless characters who had to learn to overcome their failings and mistakes...before all was forever lost.

Thank you to NetGalley, Grand Central Publishing, and Vanessa Savage for the advanced copy of The Night They Vanished in exchange for my honest review.

This was my first book by Vanessa Savage but it definitely will not be my last. I loved her writing style and the way she was able to build suspense. I also felt the alternate POV chapters blended together really well.

As for the plot itself, I was highly entertained and flipped pages like crazy to figure out how everything was going to end. As previously mentioned, Savage does a great job of building suspense and revealing the mysteries at the right time. While I didn't *love* the ending, I did find it satisfying, so I'm not too hung up on it.

Looking forward to reading more from this author in the future!

The Night They Vanished is out in the US on May 3!
