Opinion
I got this book because it advertised that it is specifically for lower level readers who are older kids. After reading this book, I can see that it would interest kids from upper elementary through high school.
As it is advertised, the book does a good job of keeping a story going while not being over the head of lower readers. I personally loved how action packed it was.
This book is not for good readers, who would quickly become bored. However, those who struggle will find themselves immersed in this story. With high interest fiction books like this one, I can see the low readers reading more. That is how to turn their reading skills around and become a higher level.
Many thanks to Net Galley and Orca Book Publishers for providing me with an ARC of this book.

"One Last Job" by Sean Rodman is a fun YA read that will appeal to boys and girls alike. Michael is on summer break from school and his mom, a single working parent, wants to keep him busy and out of trouble. When his grandfather has a heart attack, it provides the perfect occupation for him. Michael's responsible for staying with Gramps, getting him to go for walks and making sure he takes his medication. And this should keep him out of trouble, but for one detail. Gramps isn't your typical grandfather.

Gramps is a retired thief. When a burglar steals a treasured possession, a necklace that belonged to Michael's grandmother--and one that happened to be stolen in the first place--the pair decide not to call the police. Instead, they take matters into their own hands.

I really enjoyed this book. The story of Michael's and his Gramps attempts to retrieve the necklace involves gangsters, delicious food, and dangerous exploits. It is well-written and entertaining, with a well-paced plot and likeable characters.

Thanks to the publisher for providing an eARC of One Last Job in exchange for an honest review.

I'm fairly sure this is a hi-lo teen book (high interest and appropriate subject matter for teen audiences while maintaining a shorter length and lower difficulty) which is why I was a little surprised by how middle grade it felt since the whole point of most of the other hi-lo books I've read have seemingly been to show storylines older readers could relate to/get invested in. I think it's a fairly good read from an MG perspective, that just isn't what I thought I was getting into.

AN interesting book about a grandfather and a grandson pretty bonding over committing a crime. To steal back a necklace as one last burglary. Don’t try this at home kids.

Watch your grandfather, they said. It'll be fun, they said.

After a burglar steals his grandmother's necklace, his grandfather's only tie to her now, Michael enlists the help of his friend Tank to get the necklace back. Following the chain of custody from the thief (the nephew of an old criminal friend of Gramps'), to the jewelry store owner who used to help Gramps get rid of his stolen goods, to the drug dealer who bought it at a bargain, Michael takes his first (and last!) foray into thieving.

What I liked about this book:
1. This was a quick fun read with descriptive writing that kept you on edge during pivotal parts.

2. The relationship between Gramps and Michael is refreshing and fun.

3. Tank is hilarious, but that boy is going to end up in jail one day!!!

4. I like the switcheroo at the end. I questioned why a copy was being made if it wasn't going to have the same sentiment to Gramps, but now I get it!

5. I love a morally grey plot, and this definitely delivered!

What I disliked about this book:
1. That Jin kid broke too easily. I get it in hindsight, but in the moment I was unconvinced.

2. I was hoping for a grandfather-grandson thief team from the beginning. We sort of got this, but I wanted so much more teamwork and plotting together!!!

3.5 stars!
