This is a children's book in which a little girl wonders what kind of poem a bird would carry if it had pockets, and this leads to wondering about all kinds of animals, and what kind of poetry they would write. It's a cute format that helps children learn animal facts as well.

Engaging, rhyming poems with vivid illustrations. All are similar in format. I thought there would be more of a variety of poetic styles…

f this isn’t the cutest book I’ve ever read, I don’t know what is! The combination of poetry AND learning about specific animals is so unique; it’s the first time I’ve ever seen something produced like this and with those stunning illustrations.

I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. This is a book is filled with poetry about different creatures in nature.

A mask poem is one in which the author takes on the persona of an object, in this case, birds. Each bird's voice comes through each poem as if they are speaking. This is an effective form for writing for and with children. These poems educate about specific bird types in a personal, lyrical, and fun-to-read way. Children will enjoy reading each poem and imagining what life is like through the eyes of these specific birds.

A very sweet and creative book of poetry. Thinking about the perspective of animals can promote empathy and creativity in children and the poems can also be read as riddles.

What a delightful and informative book! I especially enjoyed the Introduction to "Poem in Your Pocket Day" which began in 2002 formally but specifically reminds everyone that poems can be celebrated each and every day.
My elementary school students will be smiling when they see the titles and poets on each page. The poems are educational and humorous simultaneously. Each pages incorporate sounds and a varied display of the words. The illustrations are vivid and eye-catching.
This book will be inspiring to promote students becoming poets themselves. Thoroughly enjoyable!.

The poems in this book are specific and accessible to elementary children. I plan to have my students write their own poems following these as models.

Thanks to the publishers for sharing this one. It's a lovely book of poetry for children, and I know a couple of young animal lovers who will go mad for it. It'd be a good addition to a school library. My full review appears on Weekend Notes.

If This Bird Had Pockets is a collection of simple short nature poems written from the point of view of animals. The book begins with a brief explanation of Poem in Your Pocket Day, which sounds like a fun activity to do with elementary students. After that, there are a variety of poems which teach facts about animals. There are also whimsical yet realistic illustrations sprinkled throughout the book which children should delight in looking at. This book would be perfect to use in science class with an animal unit or in ELA with a poetry unit. It would also make a great addition to a classroom library for students who have an interest in animals and/ or poetry. I only wish that there were more facts throughout the collection.

I learned something new! I did not know that there was such a thing as Poem in Your Pocket Day in April!
This book took an imaginative look at animals as if they were sharing poems about themselves. The poems share information about 21 different animals, birds, and insects using poetry and poetic elements.
As a teacher, I see lots of opportunities for using this in the classroom. This poetry book not only has information about the different animals, but it uses poetic elements such as similes, metaphors, personification, and onomatopoeia. I feel that using this book to teach poetry would be great since students tend to have a high interest in animals. I plan on purchasing a copy for my classroom library!

Thank you @netgalley for the ARC e-reader edition!

Very cute illustrations and poems "written by" animals. Perfect for a toddler who enjoys seeing different animals and rhyming.

The illustrations were colorful, simple, and good. Written from the animals’ POV, the poems were okay, they were fine. It was a nice read, but just meh unfortunately.. A plus I would like to point out is that there’s small facts woven into the poems.

Reasonable and brief but certainly brightly-designed poetry book for young readers, all (bar the framing ones) written from the point of view of animals describing themselves. As a result you could perhaps read them out in class activities as riddles, then discuss what makes each 'author' proud about itself. Better books would not have compelled me to write about them as a resource with an extended use – further evidence that this volume only goes so far.

A wonderful collection of whimsical children's poetry loaded with animal facts and engaging artwork. This would be a great addition to any classroom or school library for the elementary levels. Pick this little gem up for Poem in Your Pocket day!

This book would make a wonderful addition to your classroom writing or science center. Each page contains a poem "written" by a different animal. The poems are charming, but also are chock full of information about the animals themselves. The cadence and rhythm of the poems are charming, and they would make wonderful read-aloud poems as well. The illustrations were simple but appealing and colorful. I could easily see this being a small group activity for the classroom, with the groups able to present facts about the animals. I could also see it used to present a poem unit, as a jumping-off point for students to write their own animal poems. I can't wait to buy this book for my classroom!
