A cozy mystery set in the 1920’s. The main characters are, Jax who is a private detective, his loyal canine Ace and Laura. Laura is an actress whose star is rising in Broadway. Their lives collide when a playwright is found dead and his script is missing. His manuscript happens to be worth a lot of money. There’s are some twists that adds to the story. A romance happens, even with all that is happening. Laura is a great foil for Jax. Who has the most to gain from his death? Who is the killer or killers? And where is the manuscript? Now the the mystery begins. This is a wonderful cozy mystery with great characters.

I am totally hooked on historical mysteries and this one is right at the top of ones I have read or listened to on audible (please put your stories on audible) Sorry just had to get that in!

The roaring twenties is so much fun and visiting all the places, especially Coney Island and the broadway scene! So fascinating!

Simply delightful and cannot wait to read more!!

The combination of a private detective, Broadway star and German Shephard investigating a series of murders made for an intriguing and enjoyable read.

All are extremely likeable characters, and the author describes them in increasing depth as the mystery unfolds.
At times, the story felt just a little predictable but, in the end, the reveal was just a bit of a surprise. The scene is set for more adventures.

With thanks to #Netgalley and Gail Meath for my advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review,

I read a book by Gail Meath a while ago and I enjoyed it very much, so I decided to see more of her work and I have to say: I wasn't disappointed. This was yet another pleasant read! The mystery, the dots waiting to be connected with the answers always a step ahead and of course, the Roaring Twenties made for a perfect getaway from reality (and my exams 😬). There was a lovely romance developing, but honestly, I was more interested in the crime and mystery. And I am very much so invested in the deck of cards and their meaning. Is there more to it? The book ends with a beautiful cliffhanger, or better say, some questions still left unresolved. One story is finished, but there was a path that leads right into the next adventure.

This is a great mystery set in 1923 in New York. Jax’s sidekick, Ace, the wonderfully charming German Shepherd, will make his way into your heart in no time. The setting transports us back to that place and time. The portrayal of Coney Island makes you feel as if you are there, hanging on for dear life in the Steeplechase or winning a prize in the baseball toss. The mystery is so well done, with puzzles and red herrings that will keep you guessing. The main characters are complex and interesting. There is romance within this story, but the complex mystery is the real draw for me. I highly recommend this book in the series of Jax Diamond Mysteries and I am eagerly awaiting the second book in the series.

When I read the blurb for this book I had high hopes, and needless to say, this book did not disappoint. Songbird is set in the 1920’s when theater was big. This is a murder mystery that will have you thinking of Agatha Christie books and just as well written. This story takes twists and turns that will leave the reader guessing and along the way is a very enjoyable ride.

Gail Meath has done a wonderful job weaving a story of deception, deceit and lies. I hope she will write more in the near future because I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Thank you to #netgalley and #gailmeath for allowing me to read an ARC of this book. All opinions expressed above are my own.

I received this ARC via Netgalley and the author, in return for an honest review. I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to the next in this new series. We meet Jax Diamond, former police officer and current private investigator, in 19020’s New York City. Jax is aided by the best sidekick ever, Ace, an amazingly smart German Shepherd. Jax is following a successful playwright whose wife suspects of having an affair. When Jax discovers the man’s dead body, he calls his former police partner to report the death. But as Jax looks around the scene, things just don’t add up. The only person who Jax saw the victim meet is a rising Broadway star, Laura Graystone, so Jax arranges to meet Ms. Graystone and the sparks start flying.
This was a well written book, and I can’t wait for the next in this series! The characters are engaging; the backstories for Jax and Laura are interesting, and the book is a solid entry into 1920s mysteries. Both Jax and Laura are strong characters and make a great team, aided by Ace and Jax’s former police partner. I look forward to seeing what happens in the next book!

Gail Meath delivers an entertaining tale with "Songbird". Set in 1920s New York City, lovely heroine and Broadway actress Laura Graystone joins forces with private detective Jax Diamond to solve a murder. This crime-solving duo is actually a trio, however, as Diamond has an intelligent and intuitive German Shepherd Dog. Ace is simply delightful.

Even though it deals with murder, this is a mostly lighthearted book. "Songbird" is a complete story with no real cliffhanger. However, a serious and poignant discovery later in this tome deserves to be clarified. Another potential mystery exists as well, therefore I hope this crime-solving trio returns!

This clean novel has few grammatical errors, and the historical details of The Roaring Twenties are engaging. I plan to read more of Gail Meath's work.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this diverting novel.

I loved this mystery set in the roaring twenties with a slight hardboiled detective and his dog. You don’t see too many historical mysteries with a dog sidekick. And of course I’m always a sucker for any books set in the roaring twenties.

Thank you NetGalley for the eARC. I have just recently found this author. After reading her previous book, I went in search of other titles and lo and behold a day later this book was being offered. I, first and foremost, am a lover of black and white films. I dedicate my Saturdays to watching old movies with my mother so it was easy to mentally picture the going ons in this novel. I was quickly enthralled by the whodunnit feel of the book! This was a very good book. I recommend this author to anyone for any reason. She seems to have a little something for everyone!
