I have to say I was happy to read a historical romance with a woman who owned not only her independence and her sexuality. Artemis Jones didn’t shy away from who she was, what she wanted or what others thought of her. I loved everything about her.

After giving up her position as a teacher at a finishing school, Artemis heads to London to assist her best friend during a season that is being forced upon her, by joining the foray as well. Her hope is she’ll find a patron for the women’s college she want to open. What she got instead was sooooo much more.

Dominic was the perfect partner for Artemis. His reputation with the ton made it possible for him to forget all the other ladies of the season and befriend Artemis. The sparks flew between the two of them and you just knew these two weren’t going to be able to fight the chemistry between them. Add in her help with his teenage daughter and her friendship with his sister and it was easy to see Artemis was going to be the new duchess of Dartmoor.

This is one of my favorite historical romances of the year. It’s sexy, smart and filled with witty banter. It’s definitely a book I recommend to everyone.

This was a great read! There’s so much detail and so much story. It really captures your interest and you just want to keep reading to find out more about these characters. A really enjoyable read!

Well, guess who just became an Amy Rose Bennett fan? This gal! I am brand new to her work, but liked how the description of Up All Night with a Good Duke sounded, and decided to request the ARC and give it a whirl. Man, am I happy I got approved. I could NOT put it down! I would like that thank Amy Rose Bennett for the bags under my eyes and the trebly-snoozed alarm clock, because after I finished this ARC this weekend, I raced to Amazon to grab more of her books, then stayed up to the wee hours devouring them.

It’s going to be so hard to talk about Up All Night without spoiling it, and I worry that folks won’t know how totally bomb (that means AMAZING) this book is! We have Artemis Jones (who wins for best heroine’s name), a 29-year old spinster who has no intention of marrying, stuck teaching at a horrible finishing school (the headmistress’ motto is “no gentleman wishes to wed a woman with a masculine level of intelligence”), while simultaneously writing risqué Gothic novels under the nom de plume Lydia Lovelace (the similarity to Linda Lovelace HAD to be intentional and I. AM. HERE. FOR. IT) and dreaming of opening an actual academic college for women. One of her besties, Lucy, is being forced into a Season by her clueless, but well-meaning father, and she begs Artemis to come back to London to do it with her. Artemis has a 24-year old sister, Phoebe, who has been told by their guardian, Aunt Roberta (who hates that Artemis is a bluestocking) that she won’t get a Season unless Artemis does one. Phoebe, unlike big sis, WANTS a Season and to get married. Well, that makes this a win-win, so our heroine tells the horrible finishing school to kick rocks, and she’s London bound.

Enter Dominic, the Dastardly Duke of Dartmoor (this book is alllll about clever alliteration) who is a widow with the world’s most precocious 15-year old daughter. He needs a wife, he needs something more than work in his life, he needs someone to teach him more about 15-year old girls (because he is making him crazy), he needs to rehabilitate his terrible reputation (people think he killed his wife—gasp). Even though he’s hot as fire and a Duke, no less, Dominic is barely received because of the wife-killing rumors.

Artemis and Dominic are on a collision course (literally, lol) and their lives are about to become seriously entangled, to the detriment (and benefit) of them both!

This book made me laugh out loud. I am not kidding about the alliteration. “Hell’s blasted bells” and “Lucifer’s love truncheon” are just two examples. I will repeat that last one until the day I die. I hope Amy Rose Bennett trademarks that one, because it is straight fire.

This book stayed interesting, and you immediately fall in love with the main characters. It has honestly been a long time since I have enjoyed both main characters from their first introduction until the last page. I rooted for them both consistently the entire time I was reading. Artemis is just an amazingly strong woman trying to be herself in a time when women like her are NOT accepted or appreciated. Dominic is a progressive guy and caring father who is unfairly maligned by rumors surrounding his wife’s death. Their back and forth is hilarious and hot at the same time (seriously, this is an impressive feat—the author must know magic). The spicy parts are delightfully spicy. The villain is an odious POS baddie. The secondary characters are three-dimensional and interesting—you don’t mind when the plot veers off toward them; you actually want to know what they’re thinking and what happens to them. There’s some mystery, the ending was good, and there is an epilogue (I’m a fool for epilogues!). I like EVERYTHING about this book (even the cover is 5 star). This is definitely a 5-star read. I expect there will be at least two more books (featuring her best friends Lucy and Jane) and I am ready for them!

I wasn’t kidding about the alliteration, by the way. It’s magical.

Another great read by Amy Rose Bennet. The book abounds with witty dialogue between the Duke and the Teacher that is used effectively to show how their feeling for each other grow over time. Two cautious yet lonely souls gradually find love with each other in a very satisfying story. I cannot wait for the next book in the Byronic Book Club series!

In 1858, Artemis Jones is a finishing-school teacher by day and Gothic romance writer by night who wants to open her own ladies' college. She’s bristling against the intellectually stifling atmosphere. When Artemis is asked to help a shy fellow Byronic Book Club member navigate her first Season, she comes at once, hoping to also avoid to her aunt Roberta’s schemes to marry her off.

Dominic Winters, the widowed Duke of Dartmoor, needs an heir and also some help managing his adolescent daughter. The rumor that he murdered his first wife has led to his isolation in the years since she died and he’s going to have to re-enter society to find a wife.

And of course he doesn’t approve of the progressive books or scandalous romances his daughter reads.

I hoped our hero would have potential when the author had Artemis’s friend write about her suitors: “I’m sure they will all be objectionable with not a Mr. Darcy or honorable version of Mr. Rochester amongst them”. He’s confident without being obnoxious or overbearing.

The conversation between the MCs was quick and clever. Both characters have strong personalities and both have to overcome painful memories and the mistakes they made in their younger days. They have great chemistry together and there weren’t any drawn out misunderstandings to keep them apart.

I struggled to get behind Artemis’s scheme to get out from under her aunt and wondered why an engagement of convenience wasn’t the plan from the get-go. A lot of the book was spent in Artemis’s head and I wish we had more conversations between her and Dominic, and more between Dominic and his daughter. The conniving governess was a weak spot for me, since her meddling wasn’t built up from earlier in the book.

I received an arc from NetGalley

I received an ARC copy from NetGalley and this is my freely given opinion.

This was a great start for a new series, with two main characters who were nicely fleshed out that I really enjoyed.

Artemis Jones is a 29 year old woman who loves gothic romances, reading, and has a passion for women's education. For the mid 19th century, she would be considered quite radical and brazen. Her dreams are to raise enough money to start a college for women so they can have an education equal to that provided to men. A close friend requests her assistance for the Season in London, giving her incentive to quit her teaching job at a despised finishing school. She could go to London, help her friend, and perhaps find a patroness to help fund her college.

Dominic Winters is known as the Dastardly Duke of Dartmoor as his wife disappeared many years under mysterious circumstances and presumed dead. Even though the coroner declared her death an accident, it is rumoured heavily that he killed her, to the point where he and his daughter are socially isolated. He is having greater difficulty relating to and managing his 15 year old daughter as she copes with her own growing pains, and loneliness. He has come to the point in his life that he realizes that he probably should marry again, for an heir, and someone to help manage his homes and his family; a governess is just not enough for his daughter. But his tainted reputation is a heavy burden on the both of them.

Artemis and Dominic literally run into each other several times, and cannot deny their attraction. But Artemis would not be considered appropriate Duchess material and she has no wish to marry anyways. But they devise a plan for an engagement of convenience so she can help him out with his teen girl problems, with the promise of his funding of her school... and if they have a bit of fun along the way, well - Lucifer's love truncheon, why not?!

I found this to be a very engaging story with likeable main characters with relatable situation, and human flaws, and characteristics. The writing and dialogue are fun and fast paced, and the heat between the MCs quite steamy. I love the second chance theme and the more mature heroine, and her developing relationship with the lonely 15 year old girl as well as with the father.

There was a plot quibble I had though... I loved the tension in the story line with someone from Artemis's past, who coincides as a menace in the Duke's, but I do wish that, for such a strong and independent character that Artemis is, that she could have been the heroine of her situation, rather than the Duke. Or that she got a chance to confront the duplicitous governess herself again. Not that how the story went was bad, but that is just a wish for an alternative scenario(s).

Otherwise I sacrificed sleep and my work breaks to read and finish this - thoroughly enjoyed!

4 stars out of 5.

This was such a lovely read... I'm not usually able to read something in one sitting, but I was with this book, so that was just great!

I just loved the chemistry Despite the little bit of confusion I had with keeping up with all the different characters, I absolutely ADORED the steam in this one, and the dialogue during their steamy encounters was absolute perfection!!!

I can't wait to read what's next from the author And my wallet is ready for whenever another one of her excellent books is published!!!

5 stars

I enjoyed this book. The heroine writes Gothic novels and the hero is the epitome of a gothic hero but nicer.
Artemis has been a schoolteacher, let down by her relatives who only want a marriage for her instead of a career. She meets Dominic in the rain and there's an immediate connection. He's thought to have murdered his wife. He has a daughter that's becoming a teenage rage monster so needs Artemis's expertise in calming the situation.

As this is the start of a series we meet Artemis's sister Phoebe and her friend Lucy who I assume will be in other books. The villain is a bit two dimensional but believable.

It's set in Victorian England and I liked how the author acknowledged and dealt with the difficult apparel of that time! Eargerly awaiting the next book.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Artemis Jones, teacher (though soon unemployed) and author comes back to London to help her friend Lucy who is overwhelmed and unenthusiastic at the idea of a London season. Arriving in London she meets an intriguing man who she then keeps bumping in to. Dominic, Duke of Dartmoor is suspected by the ton of murdering his wife - rumours which are encouraged by his brother in law. When troubles with his teenage daughter lead him to search for a new wife he knows outspoken and independent Artemis probably isn't the most sensible choice but...

I enjoyed this book. Artemis is funny ("Lucifer's love truncheon!"), Dominic is confident but refreshingly un-obnoxious and I enjoyed meeting them and their families. I'll keep an eye out for others in this series!

Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks for the chance to read and review Up All Night with A Good Duke by Amy Rose Bennett!

I loved this book! The characters are interesting, the plot is fun, and I loved the conniving governess. I can’t wait for the next two books in the series. I’m sure they’re at least two more for reasons that will be obvious when you read this one.

I would have loved a bit more about her friends in this book and I hope the author makes sure to show us their dynamic and relationships with one another instead of just having us know that they are close. In this book, they do a lot for her, but we don’t know much about their pasts together.
