What a wonderful character DS Cross is, No messing around, he deals with facts and isn't afraid o upset people on the way. Many red herrings but they all seem plausible. He needs help himself with some everyday encounters but is ably helped along the way by his colleagues. We see the softer side with his dad, Raymond, and retired detective DCI Mofatt. His recital at the end is sheer genius

The Patient is the third title in the excellent DS George Cross series.

Cross is neurodiverse and his social skills can rub some of his colleagues the wrong way, but his meticulous investigative approach secures him the highest conviction rate amongst his peers by far.

In this installment, Cross is drawn to investigate an apparent suicide, despite protests from his own boss as well as from the officer responsible for the case who want to close the investigation. They are ready to dismiss the mother as hysterical, but Cross realises that in addition to her gut feeling, the evidence does not fit.

This book also follows the human side of the characters and the developing relationships between Cross, his colleagues, and his family.

Having bought books one to five in this series, I had no recollection of book three sitting on my NetGalley shelf.

I rattled through the third in this series of detective novels starring the neurodiverse DS George Cross and his colleagues. This time he is determined to pursue whether the apparent suicide of a recovering drug addict was all it seemed. Great characters emerging as we learn more about George and his family background. Aside from rather a lot of diomorphine scattered across the City’s fridges, this is a good story and explanation of the pros and cons of assisted dying. On we go…!

And I bought book six!

The Patient by Tim Sullivan is book 3 in the DS Croft police mystery series and is yet another fascinating read by the author. DS Croft has Asperger’s Syndrome and it has enhanced his ability to make many successful arrests and prosecutions, because of his attention to the fine detail when making his case for arrest and trial.
DS Croft has taken on a case at the behest of the mother of a supposedly suicide victim, which had previously been closed by another officer that Croft has had dealings with before.on investigation DS Croft and his team suspect that the victim was murdered but proving that murder has happened is not that easy to prove.
There is also a look into assisted death and suicide and whether there is a case to investigate these options in mental health and drug addiction for the afflicted.
A quirky look at police investigation and relationships within the autism spectrum, or just another good read.
Highly recommended

Unfortunately I have not been able to connect with this book and so after multiple attempts have had to admit defeat and mark as dnf.

DS Cross an autistic detective. Drives his colleagues and superiors mad. They can't live with him. They can't live without him. He has found a niche where he can work and because of his success his peculiarities are tolerated, not yet eulogised. Well written, good plotting, excellent characters and developing back story. If Tim Sullivan can keep the plots boiling we have another detective to add to the pantheon of the ages.

I'm not sure if this was an unedited review copy - it felt like it might be!

There is a great story here, but unfortunately, it relies so heavily on 'telling' every little thing or thought, and headhops so much that there is nothing left for the reader to do except turn pages to get to the end! This story is so overtold that the plot and characters get entirely lost. I'd love to read an edited version as the story itself is fresh and interesting.

I didn’t realize this was third in a series, but it worked as a standalone. I never once knew where this was going and enjoyed how things turned out because it was different than normal thrillers. I liked the characters too especially Detective Cross. The representation that some people with Autism are extremely intelligent was done so well.

DNF - Loved the premise behind this book & perhaps, had I read the other works within this series I might have adored this installment too! This isn't necessarily a dig at this book in particular but, I am not someone for whom this genre & the particulars of this story, imparts much enjoyment.

This has got to be one of the most refreshing reads I have read in a long while. This is the third book in the DS Cross series but the first I have read (I have since downloaded books #1 & #2) but it didnt affect the read at all.

DS George Cross is what you call the Champion of the Outsider. An outsider himself after his Autism diagnosis, Cross is rude, abrasive and awkward with people but my God is he one hell of a Detective. His dogged pursuit of the truth is what makes him the Detective with the best conviction rate on the Bristol force.

In this book Cross is investigating the closed case of an apparent suicide of a young woman named Flick who has a long history of drug abuse. The coroner rules suicide but the womans mother Sandra Wilson thinks otherwise, her daughter had been clean for two years. With no weapons, fingerprints and no witnesses Cross has to untangle the truth but to do this he has to go against and defy his bosses, even if it means the 3nd of his career.

I loved the interactions Cross had with his team in the Major Crimes Unit, the way they handled his 'ways' and were sympathetic to his nuances that are typical to the spectrum. Even the characters that were less positive were integral as they were then briefed on autistic tendencies.

This is one hell of a gripping read that heads off into surprising directions with unexpected twists that actually shocked me which I've found is harder to do the older I get 😂

As a mother to a high functioning autistic child I found this so refreshing, well researched and sympathetic to the spectrum.

I honestly can't recommend this book and the series enough, I will be waiting in anticipation for the next installment.

Huge thanks to netgalley and Head of Zeus for the ARC.
