I read this book and then "reread" it by listening to the audiobook. The audiobook with its dual narrators elevates the story and made me appreciate it all over again. I love this series and if each book is narrated this way, I will listen to every one.

I just about screamed when I was approved for this because when I tell you that Neon Gods changed my life... I meant it.

I liked Electric Idol slightly less than Neon Gods (mostly because I thought Hades and Persephone's dynamic was absolutely electric) but I liked it for different reasons- I liked Electric Idol because Psyche was a very relatable character, particularly physically. I especially love that Eros never mentioned that he loved/was attracted to Psyche IN SPITE OF her body- he was just into her because she was hot. I also loved hearing Eros' version of falling for Psyche, I did squeal aloud multiple times and they were all definitely warranted. Their chemistry is *chef's kiss*. Forced proximity, marriage of convenience, touch her and I'll kill you? GIVE. IT.

If you think Greek mythology is boring, please let Katee Robert change your mind.

“It’s how fucking sexy she is, yes, but I keep coming back to the trust she’s placing in me. I don’t deserve it…but strangely enough, I want to deserve it.”
If you’ve missed out on the buzz about Electric Idol by Katee Robert then let me fill you in on the ebook/print version. If you’re more of an audiobook fan, don’t worry! You can find Kristin’s audiobook review at LitBuzz as well! We have you covered!

If you’re here because #booktok has you wondering about dark romance retellings of mythology lore, welcome my lovies. Electric Idol is the modern retelling of Eros and Psyche. Equal parts forbidden romance and marriage of convenience, Electric Idol had me binging this new release from Katee Robert in just over a day.

There’s no shame in my reading game.

Eros’ mother is the latest iteration of Aphrodite. In this version of Olympus, the gods are titled jobs instead of having actual god-like powers. And while Eros Ambrosia may be a pretty face, he’s also his mother’s right hand guy. For him, over the years that has meant that he has devolved from being his mother’s protector to her hitman. Set in the modern world, Aphrodite prides herself on the ability to provide the current Zeus with the best candidates to be his Hera.

“I enjoy kissing. I always have. But kissing this woman could almost be the main event.”
This is where things get hinky. Demeter is still determined to get one of her daughters as the new Hera. With Persephone newly wed to Hades (Neon Gods Book 1), Demeter looks to Psyche to fulfill the plan she has for the Dimitrou family. You can see how this would be a problem. As a socialite, Psyche is used to crafting the image she wants everyone to see, and she uses it as a shield for the ruthlessness of Olympus society. Aphrodite takes afront to Demeter’s disregard and summons Eros to put an end to Demeter’s machinations by taking out Psyche.

What I love most about how Katee Robert writes her stories is that she really looks into how to best tell the story of each of her characters. Eros and Psyche have well-established society identities, but no one on Olympus knows their real selves. It’s only when Eros has a moment of clarity where he sees the kind of woman Psyche is, and feels like she can see his true self as well that he proposes that they marry in order to keep Psyche alive. In regards to the amount of inner dialogue and turmoil that both Eros and Psyche expresses on the page, I think that is essential for their character development and arc. Both are the equivalent of a shell to the Olympus society, so there needs to be depth expressed behind the masks that they wear.

“The woman showed me kindness once, and then I essentially followed her home like a feral cat and forced her to marry me.”
Think of Electric Idol like a chess match in social media and society politics. Eros and Psyche learn to trust and fall in love with each other behind the curtain and the projection of what everyone expects of them. I adored this story. It was both emotional as well as psychological but told in a way that didn’t detract from the romance of the overall journey.

If you can’t tell, I loved Electric Idol. I absolutely cannot wait to see what comes next because there is a bombshell at the end of the book that is both unexpected as well as deliciously devious. Electric Idol is out now and available at your favorite bookstore, or online retailer. Bee sure to check out Kristin’s audiobook review as well!

Electric Idol by Katee Robert is the second book in the Dark Olympus series, and I think I loved it even more than the first. I love the fake relationship trope and this one was done really well. I find the modern Olympus world Roberts has built very fascinating and I want to continue to read about it. And I am even more excited to do that when the stories are framed with traditional romance tropes!! Give me my morally grey lead, those HEA’s, and stories that still give me snapshots of the other romances in this world. This is a fantastic audiobook with great narration. I don’t typically love different narrators for each character, but it works well for this story. And provides clarity on whose perspective it is.

Story:
This is my first listen by this author and I absolutely loved it! Eros and Psyche are delish. Eros's description as a stray cat that followed Psyche home is hilarious and very apt. It is a retelling and I believe Ms. Robert did a fantastic job with the story. I am looking forward to the next installment.

Narration:
There is no doubt these narrators are immensely talented. However, I believe they were not the right match for this story. Their voices sound much older than these characters and this was a constant distraction. The female voice by the male narrator left a lot to be desired, not going to lie. Psyche sounded like a snooty, spoiled brat every time he voiced her. Every single female voice sounded pretty similar. The female narrator was very talented, but also sounded older, not as older as the male narrator.

I hope Ms. Roberts starts casting more experienced romance and erotica narrators. A fiction narrator will not necessarily be successful in narrating an erotic romance. Romance narrators know their craft and know how to turn up the heat. Shane East would've been perfect for this role and so would Stella Hunter or Saskia Maarleveld.

I knew as soon as I finished Neon Gods that I needed more Dark Olympus ASAP. I requested ELECTRIC IDOL as soon as I seen that it was available and was beyond excited that it was approved.

ELECTRIC IDOL is a fast paced modern retelling of the story of Psyche and Eros. After Aphrodite asks for her enforcer (Eros) to bring her Psyches heart, they concoct a scheme to save her life. There's a lot going on; there's a marriage of convenience, enemies to lovers, body positivity, plus size rep, toxic mothers, and plenty of spice.

3.5 Stars

I devoured this book, twice. I didn't love it as much as Neon Gods, but it was a good sequel. I love that Katee Roberts included a body positive plus sized main character (Psyche). I couldn't help but love the beautifully broken and complex Eros as well.

I do wish it was a little more plot driven and had more world building because I was confused in a couple of places. I personally was not a fan of the narrators and it made me cringe a little at times. I don't get why they have accents... I don't think they were right for the story at all.

I would recommend this book to anyone that loved Neon Gods or spicy mythology books in general. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the Dark Olympus series and more from Katee Roberts in general.

Thank you to Netgalley, Sourcebooks, and Dreamscape Media for allowing me to listen to this audiobook/ access to an EARC in exchange for an honest review.

First and foremost the narrators for this audio really brought these two incredibly sexy and sensual characters to life. This book is hot, hot, hot! I obsessed with this plus-size, dark haired, hazel-eyed goddess that is Psyche. But not only is she absolutely gorgeous but she's brilliant. She's a social media master and can spin any tale. Eros is just a sad man who needs love and has plenty of it to give even though he doesn't think he deserves it or knows how. The dynamic between these two characters is so enigmatic from the first second they share a page to the very last. There is never a second of down down between the constant strategizing of the two, to the super sexy intimate scenes between them. This book has everything we love in a Dark Olympus novel; parties, fabulous clothes, an incredibly interesting cast of characters, and of course a twisting and turning story with an incredible climax. Giving this 5 stars is just not enough for me to declare how much I love this book so it's only fair that I give it infinity!!!

I enjoyed this book a lot more than the first installment in the series.
I loved the main characters a lot!
Psyche was a fun and strong woman. I enjoyed the fact of her being bigger and her loving her body even though society was trying to put her down. Nothing better than a big girl loving herself. I'm all for it!
Also having Eros being obsessed with her and loving her body was the best!
The storyline itself was interesting and it was nice seeing both old and new characters.
Having this modern take on what Olympus would be like is very fun!
I am curious about book 3 and sure will be reading it!

You got more of the retelling of the city of Olympus. This gave you a view in to more of the shady interactions and power struggles with the "gods" of Olympus. You have Eros who is cornered in to being close to Psyche. Nice to see the plus sizes character being loved and having her body worshipped.

I'm not sure what to say here... I really wanted to like this book. I liked Neon Gods even as I struggled with some plot holes. Electric Idol was similarly entertaining and something easy to escape to. Listening to the drama of this modern Olympus is like watching trashy reality television--it's a train wreck from which you cannot look away!

I found Psyche to be compellingly sweet/kind, and I appreciated her message on body image. Eros's reaction to trolls on her social media was probably one of my favorite things in the book. All that being said, I just couldn't get over the original dilemma of the book where Eros is genuinely going to kill Psyche. It's just... ick! I understand what the author was trying to go for here with the whole reformed monster trope and how his upbringing "made" him into what he is today, but at the end of the day, a decent man would have left that lifestyle a long time ago despite the consequences.

I don't know... maybe I'm just not spicy enough to fall for the bad guy. After all, Captain America is my favorite Avenger.

I likely will not be recommending this book to readers unless they loved Neon Gods and want to continue to follow the story.

Synopsis: In the ultra-modern city of Olympus, there’s always a price to pay. Psyche knew she’d have to face Aphrodite’s ire eventually, but she never expected her literal heart to be at stake…or for Aphrodite’s gorgeous son to be the one ordered to strike the killing blow.
Eros has no problem shedding blood. But when it comes time to take out his latest target, he can’t do it. Confused by his reaction to Psyche, he does the only thing he can think of to keep her safe: he marries her. Psyche vows to make Eros’s life a living hell until they find a way out of this mess. But as lines blur and loyalties shift, she realizes he might take her heart after all…and she’s not sure she can survive the loss.

Things I liked: I really enjoyed that this book tamed down the spice compared to Neon Gods. Not that the spice in Neon Gods was bad but at times it did get to be a bit too much. This book had more of a dramatic plot line and dynamics within Olympus rther than just straight smut the whole time.

Things I disliked: The characters had good chemistry but it wasn’t amazing. I also got a bit tired of them thinking “i love you” but never saying it to one another. I get the marriage of convenience makes admitting real emotions tricky but at a certain point it felt redundant and it took me out of the story a bit. Their sexual tension at times was also awkward. Hades and Persephone were off the charts with their sexual tension and this one at times fell a bit flat.

My Review: Neon Gods was better but this was still good.

Would I Recommend It?: If you’re old enough, yes. If you’re a teenager…. why have you read this far?

The second book in the Dark Olympus series is just as good as the first.

"Electric Idol" is a modern retelling of Olympus focusing on Psyche and Eros. It picks up shortly after the first book ends, and gives even more depth to a pretty detailed world. You can't help but get drawn in by the drama surrounding the 13 and their extended families. The romance is as sizzling, as is it sweet, and despite all the odds against them you can't help but rooting for this pair.

I especially loved that this book has the same narrators as the first in the series. Their voices are a prefect match for this world. It would have been easy to change narrators with the switch in main characters, but the decision to keep the same voices was a good one. I couldn't imagine hearing the world of Olympus from anyone else. I can't wait to find out where this series goes next.

I read this in one sitting, finishing it at 5:30am, because I became quickly invested in this book. Way faster then I had any right too.
I found Psyche and Eros to be an incredibly adorable couple. But most specifically the way Eros is so enraged by how people talk about Psyche and is incredibly protective of her. Also the progression of Eros referring to Psyche as his wife.
Overall this book was super sweet, with a handful of spice.

I was interested in this book after reading Neon Gods, it wasn’t my favorite Persephone and Hades retelling but it intrigued me enough to make want to continue this series. Electric Idol did have me a bit more intrigued because I’m not as familiar with the mythology of Eros and Psyche. I think that fact made me enjoy this retelling more, since I didn’t have all that mythology knowledge and expectation going in.

When it comes to the story itself I enjoyed the back and forth banter of the characters and how they interact for the first time. The sexual tension that is established in that first scene was really great, but after that the dilema that is introduced when Eros is ordered to kill Psyche and bring her heart to his mother; that felt childish. Aphrodite is childish, petty, and just a horrible character, which I don’t enjoy at all. This conflict didn’t fell well rounded and more of just a wrench to throw into the story to create a “problem” and establish the ‘forced marriage’ trope.

Overall I still enjoyed the book and found it more interesting than Neon Gods, but there were issues that did annoy me and things that I wish would have been better explained. The way this huge issues was resolved seemed to easy and the finally left some things to be desired. I would still recommend it and will continue the series.

I loved the physical book, and when I saw it was an audiobook, I thought PERFECT I could test something I have wanted to try; if I can handle spicy audiobooks.

I had tried before but wanted to see if reading it first would help me get past my awkwardness while listening, and because I loved the book, I didn't think it hurt to try. RESULTS = Reading first works for me!
I RECOMMENDED THIS AUDIOBOOK!

Big thanks to Katee Robert, Dreamscape Media and Netgalley for the Audio ARC in exchange for a review.

This is the second in a series, this time following Psyche and Eros.

Psyche, another daughter of Demeter, is destined to be another political move for her mother, That is until she accidently upsets Eros's mother, Aphrodite. In order to save her life, Eros's decides the best way to protect Psyche, and prevent his mother from forcing his hand, is to marry Psyche. It's purely business, until it isn't.

This is scorchingly hot and delicious. I have never read a Psyche/Eros storyline before but it went well into the Hades/Persephone storyline from the first book.

The narrator was good.

This is on par with Scarlett St. Clair books.. anyone who is a fan of her work is going to be a fan of Katee Robert's.
5 stars and I'll be waiting for the next one!

You know how after you see a kitten or a puppy it's so cute your brain can't handle it and you have the urge to squeeze something? This was me post Electric Idol.

I just want to know how Katee Robert took something so sexy and steamy and still made it one of the cutest things I have ever read. This author executed the tropes in this book flawlessly, I felt like I honestly couldn't read/listen to this book fast enough.

As a plus size woman, the way Katee wrote Psyche made me feel incredibly seen and represented without the characters weight becoming overly leaned into, or her entire personality. Reading about Psyche made me feel confident and reignited my hope that authors can write plus size main characters well.

One of my favorite parts of Electric Idol is we got to see more of the sisters interacting. They have such a strong sense of family that I feel like it was special to see to better understand why thy put so much trust and work so hard to protect one another. Selfishly I wish there had been more scenes of the sisters just being sisters. I honestly can't wait to read more of this series and from Katee Robert in general.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for granting me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Katee Robert writes another spicy book set in Olympus. Pysche, daughter of Demeter and local influencer, ends up in a compromising position with Eros, son and personal henchman of Aphrodite. To avoid a death sentence from Aphrodite, Psyche and Eros are forced to engage in a fake relationship.

Once again, I find the Olympus books to be a bit more plot than smut. This allows Katee to really delve into the character and relationship development. Psyche is a girlboss of the highest order, and I absolutely adore how her and Eros interact. Forcing each other to be the best versions of themselves while also discovering new things about each other, this is a cute and swoon-worthy romance!

I also liked both narrators and how they were used to voice the different POVs. Zara does a great job in voicing both Psyche's inner thoughts as well as personifying Eros.

Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the free audio-Arc in exchange for an honest review!

Electric Idol by Katee Robert is the second book in the Dark Olympus series following Neon Gods. Neon Gods was an awesome modern take on Hades and Persephone. The Electric Idol follows the story of Psyche, Persephone's sister and Eros, son of Aphrodite and her hit man. After doing all Aphrodite's dirty work, Eros is shocked when his mother asks for Psyche's heart literally. Eros is unable to get the job done and instead becomes Psyche's protector by marrying her. While they have a marriage of convenience, there is an instant attraction between the two. How they navigate through the world of Olympus and escape Aphrodite's need to kill Psyche forms the premise of the story.

I really love retelling and anything related to Greek Mythology, so I enjoyed this one! This one is definitely lesser taboo than Neon Gods, but boy it was pretty steamy!! I also liked that it wasn't pure smut and there was some romance and plot involved. Loved the bond that Eros and Psyche share and their chemistry was amazing. The body image representation in this is fantastic! Appreciated the way Katee Roberts addressed the body shaming and Psyche's insecurities. I loved the progression of some of the characters from Neon Gods in this book and the twist at the end was pretty cool!! I can't wait for Wicked Beauty!!

Thank you to Dreamscape Media and SourceBooks Casablanca for the ARC of Electric Idol by Katee Roberts.

I loved this book. I loved this book so much that it made me clutch my chest and essentially squeal. Psyche is smart, driven, hilarious, all wrapped up in a fat, body positive bow. This did wonders for my soul. I'm not even kidding. As a plus sized reader, it is so reinforcing to read about people with a similar body type. Eros is a cinnamon roll and I cannot be convinced otherwise. Marriage of convenience is a truly beloved trope for me so I am all about every aspect of this book. The audio of this book is also incredible. I literally had to force myself to stop listening and to work hahha.

TW: fat shaming, manipulation by a parent. gaslighting, emotional abuse by a parent.
