I really enjoyed the story and the narrator made it more real for me.

The story was fun to listen to and I felt as if I was right there along as the story developed and the killer was found.

Will definitely read books by this author and look for other audios by this narrator

3.5/5 Star Rating

This book is the fourth in a series of St. Just Mysteries but never having read the previous installments did not make this read any less enjoyable. I quite like the detective mystery genre and this novel ticked all the appropriate boxes. The setting is very cozy and DCI St. Just himself is competent and easy to like. I believe the author did a brilliant job of creating a host of intriguing characters turned suspects and infusing just the right amount of humor throughout.

😱🔪

This story appeals to anyone who enjoys a classic murder mystery. I’m happy to have found myself a new detective to track and plan to go back and read the previous three novels in this series. My only complaint is that this book was a bit too long. At just over 11 hours in length, it was a few hours longer than I prefer novels of this genre to be.

Thank you 🙏🏻 to the author, Dreamscape Media, and NetGalley for providing me the audio ARC in exchange for my honest review.

While this is my first, it is the fourth in a series. As far as I can tell, I was not at a disadvantage in not having read the first three. The story is a typical cozy mystery, with plenty of local color and red herrings. I learned a few interesting tidbits, but I won't share them with you for fear of spoiling the story.

The female narrator's male voices made those characters sound angry most of the time, which was off-putting and confusing. This gave me a different sense of DCI St. Just's character and relationships than what I had gleaned/expected from other reviewers.

Thank you, NetGalley and Dreamscape Media, for the audio ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I had never read this series or author before. I listened to the audio version of this book. While I enjoyed the story, I did not like the narrator. Rarely do I not like a narrator. The narrator made the main character (St. Just) sound like he was always angry/grouchy/nasty. Maybe that is the ongoing personality of the character, but I did not get that impression. However, the narrator is a woman and in her effort to adopt a masculine voice, she may have unintentionally imparted an unpleasant tone to the character's dialogue. I was immediately turned off to the character.
The mystery and setting were both good. I am curious to read a print copy of this series to see if I have the same impression of St. Just. I would probably want to read another in the series because I liked the mystery. It was cozy without being full of extraneous detail and people consuming mass qualities of very thoroughly described foods.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks to NetGallery for the review copy of this audiobook! Death in Cornwall is an engaging mystery set on the English coast, in Cornwall. The village setting--and ongoing local debate regarding the fishing industry and the effects of tourism--provides a dramatic backdrop to the murders that take place. DCI Arthur St. Just and his finance are visiting the town on holiday, from Cambridge, when they are drawn into the lives of the locals and the subsequent murder investigation. I enjoyed listening to this lively story. The descriptions of both the colorful characters and the beautiful seaside setting are wonderfully evocative. The depth of the mystery and its associated twists and turns are perfect for this format--you will easily be able to follow along and not get lost--and the narration is excellent. I didn't realize that this book was the fourth in a series when I began it, but enough background about the protagonists is provided that I don't think it hindered my appreciation of the book. It does make me want to go back and read the earlier books in the series! Finally, I very much appreciated the fact that the book is set in the post-pandemic world. The many references to the "plague times" of recent years allow for the story to reflect the ways in which life has changed, and aspects of the new normal, while providing a sense of hope that, someday, it will be in the past. Highly recommended for cozy mystery lovers!

DCI Arthur St Just and his fiancee, mystery novelist and academic Portia De’Ath are taking a break to celebrate their impending marriage (finally) in Cornwall. They plan on getting some sea, sun and sand, but find themselves embroiled in a local controversy over the decision about whether or not to build a new quay in Maidswell. Local fisherman are all in favor, but others worry that the slipway will destroy the picturesque charm of the village that brings in tourists. Wealthy Lord Bodwally is adamantly opposed to the construction; he doesn’t want anything spoiling his views of the sea. When the unpopular man is found dead, St Just and De”ath find that their vacation has become a busman’s holiday.
