This author is an amazing storyteller. I felt like I was there watching everything unfold. Almost like a fly on the wall. It had all the feels. Heartbreaking, and heartwarming, funny all rolled into one. I devoured this book in one sitting. I could not put it down. The characters were well done, and I felt like I knew them personally. This was amazing. I can't wait to read other works by this author! Thank you!

Norah and Jim, who, even though married for a number of years, still acted like honeymooners; their close-knit family and then the young evacuees, together with other local village friends, made this a good-hearted story and with a brush of humor that caught my attention. The story is set in England pre- and during WWII. Norah and Jim took in two little girlies named Ruth and Marjorie, who'd come in pre-emptively from London to avoid the chaos and horror of bombings. They stayed some weeks until their mother, who missed them too much, took them home again. Then there were the runaway orphans Amelie and Linnet who managed to escape from the clutches of their abusive father - at least for a while. Norah's caring and tenderhearted character could not leave them on the streets. However, that's when things got a whole lot more interesting. The evil, vindictive Dad was on their tail and not going to back off peacefully. Add in some spy activity and you've got yourself quite a powder keg.

I like this historical narrative very much as it described more of what life was like for the civilians and young ladies and what they could do for their bit to support the war effort. I loved most of the characters who were generally good natured and worked together for the cause and also for the good and benefit of the runaways. Of course, you always have to have the antagonists adding angst to the tale. At any rate, the story moved along at a good pace and it all came together in satisfactory conclusion despite a heartache that Jim and Norah experienced. I'd say that most mid-teens to adult readers would find this an enjoyable read.

An absolutely spellbinding story of two sisters who escaped from an abusive father during the evacuation of London. Found by a wonderful couple they love, then are found by their father. Follow an intriguing trail of suspense as they try to get away. Great story.

Absolutely loved this book from the first to the last page, following the story of Norah and Jim and 3 girls who they take in to their home and their hearts during the 2nd World war. The story has great characters with stories of love, tragedy, abuse and heartache. Fantastic book.

Norah and her husband Jim who is a local policeman are getting on with their everyday normal lives when war begins. They take in two evacuee sisters and then another two girls are delivered to their doorstep. These girls have ran away from their stepfather and with good reason.
Norah and Jim know nothing about the girls and the girls are giving nothing away but when their step father finds them Norah and Jim are drawn into a whole different world, one where they could lose everything.
Well that was some read. This story tells you how unfair life can be. How people with power and money can do what they like. There is also a kind of karma about the book too which is very satisfying.
There is a good mix of characters, the good, the kind, the annoying and the downright horrible. All put together to make a cracking read.
I couldn't put this book down once I started and I can't help hoping there might be a sequel.
Pam Weaves knows how to weave a story through your mind and keep it in your thoughts long after you have put the book down.

Pam Weaver is a new author for me and from the first page I knew I was going to love this book. I read it in a day and when I finished it I was left with questions and wondering if there was ever going to be a 2nd book.
It all starts with a brutal step father and two you girls who get the chance to escape as evacuees. They board a train in London and keep changing trains but little do they know they are working their way back towards the place they need to get away from. By chance they come across Jim and Nora Kirkwood in Worthing and begin to feel safe. Everything goes wrong and the girls are retuned to their step father.
There is so much to say about this lovely book but you just need to read it yourself and enjoy it. So well written and great characters.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon books for the chance to have the early read. My question is will there be a 2nd book as so many unanswered questions.

This is a good book, with alot of emotion. Two sisters, the older one, Amilia is being abused by her step father, so they board a train to escape the abuse. It's war time in London, young children are being sent away to other families, Amilia thinks it is the perfect way to escape her step father, she is afraid he will start abusing her younger sister, now that she has started having her monthly cycle,They end up in a great home with a family that really cares for them, it doesn't take long for her step father to find them, he tries to hide her away so she can't tell anyone what has been going on, Norah, the women that had been caring for them, knows something isent right about the situation, she does what ever it takes to find out what is going on with these girls, that she had been forbidden to have contact with. I loved this story, although it is something that happens to many young girls, I think the Author did a good job at making us feel a part of the story, I think it kinda dragged a little towards the end, I still enjoyed the book. I received this book from NetGalley, this is my honest review
