WHERE FUTURES CONVERGE by Robert Buderi is a thought-provoking case study on "Kendall Square and the Making of a Global Innovation Hub." Richard Florida positively reviewed this book, saying "A must-read for everyone who cares about understanding, cultivating, and building innovative ecosystems;" however, I found it to be much more specific about Kendall Square than about general principles pertaining to innovation hubs. Still, with tons of biotech start-ups and offices for Biogen and Moderna located in Boston, it is interesting to learn the history of the area. Buderi, an author and journalist, is adept at conducting interviews and weaving that information into his chronicle which he describes as "the collected stories of the people and ideas that turned roughly one square kilometer of land across the Charles River from Boston into one of the most powerful innovation engines the world has ever seen." He does include a chapter titled Lessons and Observations that attempts to distill the essentials as well as outlining some general principles and core ingredients. Roughly twenty percent of the text is notes, providing ample opportunity for follow-up by interested readers.
