This is so crazy, yes I knew early on the big reveal, but it’s still twisty and suspenseful! Paris Peralta is arrested for the death of her celebrity husband, Jimmy Peralta. It doesn’t look good for Paris, but eventually she posts bail. There’s a few POVs and we get to know Ruby and her daughter Joelle “Joey” Reyes. There’s so much to uncover, lives are intertwined, and secrets pour out. Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for a gifted copy. This is my honest review.

If you ask me for a book recommendation, I’m going to ask you if you like dark thrillers. If you say yes I am going to shout READ ANYTHING BY JENNIFER HILLIER! Things We Do In The Dark is fantastic. The beginning of the story introduces you to Paris as she is hauled off to jail accused of murdering her husband. And then a dark tangled web is weaved. Who is Paris? It’s a question you will ask yourself multiple times as you are reading and you will have a different answer several times throughout the book. I found this book to be utterly engrossing and I absolutely did not want to put my kindle down once I started to read. If you are reading this review and eagerly awaiting this book to be released, I greatly encourage you to read Jennifer Hillier’s other novels while you wait. You will never be disappointed.

Omg this book was just brilliant!! Jennifer Hillier delivers again big time. This book was so well written and executed that I’m having a hard time with my own words. So many awesome plot twists. I was hooked from page one and could not put it down. I really did not want it to end! I’m so impressed with the writing style and flawless delivery. Very highly recommend. Huge 5 stars from me.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book

SO excited that I was approved to read this one!! Jennifer Hillier definitely knows how to spin a dark tale that will consume you, eat you alive and then spit you out! If you plan on reading this, take my advice and clear your day ahead of time. You will NOT be able to put this book down!!

Things We Do in the Dark was not just a mysterious thriller; it was an emotional roller coaster filled with secrets, heartache and revenge! Hillier really dives deep into the lives and development of her characters, which made me feel very strongly towards either loving them or hating them. Not a simple task and Hillier was on point!

We start with Paris Peralta, who is arrested and charged with the murder of her "30 years her senior" retired comedian husband. While most people would be claiming their innocence and crying their eyes out, Paris is not. She is more concerned with being exposed for the secrets in her past. LOTS of juicy secrets!! Because what's worse than one murder charge? TWO!

Ruby Reyes is the only one who knows the truth. Reyes, dubbed the Ice Queen for murdering her married lover, has been imprisoned for the last 25 years. Will she be responsible for outing Paris to the world, destroying all that Paris has fought to overcome??? Who is the real villain of this story?

I have to say that this book was not what I thought it would be....it was so much more!! It was gripping, suspenseful and heartbreaking at times. I absolutely loved it!! Whether you're a huge fan of Hillier's like me or a first-time reader, don't pass on this one! It's a must read!!

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press / Minotaur Books for allowing me access to this advanced DRC!

Dear Jennifer Hillier did it again! She literally blew my heart and mind away at the same time! What an impeccable, gripping, nail biting, emotional, unputdownable and also wildest- darkest ride!

I have to admit when I started reading Paris’ Peralta’s conviction story for killing her thirty years older, famous comedian/ also billionaire husband, I had some second thoughts but when I reached the second part about Drew Malcolm, a journalist, who actually becomes famous with his podcast called “Things we do in the dark”, dedicated himself to make a special episode about Ice Queen Ruby Reyes who was about to get out of the prison, my entire opinions have changed.

The very same Ice Queen threatens Paris for her past crime she’s committed. What is the real connection between those women?

Drew still deals with his guilt feelings about losing love of his life at the house fire. Joey Reyes is the girl who died at young age, psychically and verbally abused by her evil mother Ruby for years and she got molested by her boyfriends which forced her to choose a painful life choices! She was a pole dancer, saving money for better life but her unexpected death changed everything!

Drew still blames himself not to save the girl he loved. What if she didn’t die in a traumatic accident, what if her dearth was connected with another pole dancer Filipino girl who looked so similar with Joey: the same girl who had connections with dangerous Asian gangs.

Does Paris know something about how Joey died? Is she responsible of both her husband and Joey’s death? What kind of leverage Ruby has on her?

Well, Joey’s heartbreaking, angsty story, her diaries, trauma she’s been through ripped my apart! The development of the characters, the author’s talented approach to show us the thin line between good and evil were impressively executed.

Reading Joey’s story made me cry a lot!
This book is more than just a psychological thriller or smart, heart wrenching mystery! It’s perfectly written character driven, one of the darkest stories I’ve ever read! In my opinion this is so far best work of the author.

Her realistic and well researched approach to poll dancers’ world was also well reflected, sad and elaborated.

No more words! Giving my five billion stars! I loved it so much!

Special thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press/ Minotaur Books for sharing this amazing digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5, Jennifer Hillier crushes the mystery thriller genre yet again! Things We Do In The Dark was compelling, fast-paced, and filled with more secrets than I could keep up with. A compelling thriller about revenge, secrets, and a woman who will do anything to protect her past life. Themes of childhood trauma and abuse were present throughout the story, so I recommend checking the content warnings if this is something that could be upsetting for you. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC!

If you enjoy darker thrillers and you haven’t given Jennifer Hillier a shot, this is your chance. I was so mesmerized through this entire book. I could not put it down. Not only does Jennifer Hillier write great thrillers, she builds her characters in a way that makes you want to know everything about them.

Paris Peralta wakes up in the bathroom only to notice that her husband is dead in the tub beside her. Her husband is a celebrity comedian so Paris is shot into the spotlight at the main suspect of her husband’s death but Paris doesn’t want to be in the spotlight because she has secrets in her past that she cannot let surface.

This book doesn’t have a podcast in it but you do get a perspective from someone who makes a podcast and following that character around while they were researching was fascinating to me.
I love the way Hillier writes her thrillers because everything just comes apart in layers. I wouldn’t say her twists are the most shocking but as the layers are peeled back, you as a reader discover things just a few pages before the character. So everything clicks into place and then you see it click for the characters and I love that.

There was one thing that I did predict very early on but it also ended up being revealed early in the book. I was worried that it would be a major twist at the very end so I was glad that it was resolved earlier than that.

I really enjoyed this thriller and I feel like it firmly cemented Hillier as an auto buy author for me. I can’t wait until this book is released and I can get the physical copy of it.

Jennifer Hillier takes risks , she isn’t intimidated by her audience or critics , she puts out the most mesmorizing books I have ever read . Her talent to story tell surpasses all expectations and can not be matched.

When I saw netgalley put up Things We Do in the Dark, I knew my day would be shot. I couldn’t focus and checked my e-mail about 385836483 times looking for a response . I prayed to the book Gods “please please please let me be approved” . I mean, I would trade a kidney for this one . Thursday night, I got the e-mail.... APPROVED. **Cue the happy dance** First I screamed, then I called out of work . I knew I needed to start reading that second and I would be up all night .

This book opens up with a Billy Joel quote, at that moment I was sold . Overwhelmed with all the feels, I continued.

Instantly captivated within seconds, this book held my attention on every single page . Packed with suspense, I sat at the edge of my seat clutching my stomach and biting my nails . I was completely left in the dark . In true Hillier fashion, I was unable to anticipate the gut punching wild ride filled with twists and turns Hillier took me on. Twisted and shocking, this book does not disappoint.

Things We Do in the Dark, screams Hollywood gold. This book is meant for the big screen.

Anything short of 5 stars would be an embarrassment .

This was my number one most anticipated reads for 2022 . Now what do I with myself ? Please excuse me while I go nurse this massive book hangover .

I was so excited to read this! It was thrilling and exciting, and had unexpected dramatic moments as well. The story is told in six parts with different POV’s. Although I did figure out the plot twist early on, it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book.

After waking up on the bathroom floor with a bump on her head, Paris Peralta is horrified to find her celebrity husband dead. Covered in blood and holding the supposed murder weapon it’s obvious the police think that she did it. Paris can’t help but think about all the unwanted media attention this will bring. That’s not the only thing she’s worried about.

Twenty five years earlier the Ice Queen Ruby Reyes was in a similar situation. Convicted of murdering her significant other, her story was widely popular. Ruby has a connection to Paris. She knows who she really is and what she’s done. Ruby threatens to expose Paris and with her unexpected release from prison, Paris scrambles to figure out how to handle the situation. She has worked too long and hard for everything to fall apart now. Will Paris be able to confront her haunted past without shattering her chance for a better future?

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for the copy of this book. I was so excited to read this book that it went to the top of my TBR list. The writing was as great as I expected so I read this in two sittings. I loved the characters - even the minor characters were distinct and added to the story. The story was engaging and I had to keep reading because I was so interested in how it would end. If you need a good and fast read, this is the book for you.
