Although fantasy is my favorite genre, MAGON isn't a book that I'd typically go for, but I decided to on a whim because a good friend of mine has been learning Welsh and talking a lot about it. This totally frivolous and unrelated reason led me to finding an enjoyable read in a place I wouldn't have normally looked. I think my favorite aspect was the feeling that there's something there that I don't quite understand, but that felt genuine. I'm not talking about the fantastical elements, I'm referring to the cultural elements. I'm not personally very versed at all in Wales and Welsh culture, but as someone who's fascinated by other cultures and always interested in seeing their representation in literature, this book made me feel a sort of yearning to know that basis. That isn't to say that one wouldn't find immersion in this book if one were unfamiliar with Welsh culture, but rather individuals of similar mind to me might also find that pull, and perhaps be able to catch it.

Despite my appreciation for this book's world building, I just couldn't connect to the storyline. Perhaps the modernization could have been a bit more fluid.
