Is anyone headed out on a road trip this summer?

With gas prices, maybe not, but air travel is a mess right now too. None of this bothered the main characters in this fun road trip story, A Thousand Miles by Bridget Morrissey, who set out to fulfill a ten year old promise.

Dee, the host of a hit podcast, and Ben, her high school best friend, took a road trip to Colorado to see his grandmother when they were in high school and buried a time capsule there. Their friendship fell apart so spectacularly after that trip that they haven’t talked to each other in ten years. Suddenly Ben shows up on Dee’s doorstep, ready to take the road trip they had promised to retake all those years before.

In spite of all her second thoughts, Dee goes. This is just the reason I enjoy road trip stories. All the witty banter, odd stops along the way, and relationship building that I love are all in this story.

Taking an actual road trip or not this summer, you can certainly pick this new book up and enjoy Dee and Ben’s!

"A promise is a promise." Despite a ten-year gap since Dee Matthews and Ben Porter have seen each other, when Ben approaches Dee to ask him to help sort out his now deceased grandmother's belongings, Dee finds that she cannot say no. They were a couple in high school and thought they might be together forever. However, they experienced a bad breakup and the pair haven't seen or spoken to one another in a decade.

As a successful podcaster, Dee has talked about nearly every aspect of her life. There is one issue she won't talk about, or a name at least. That is Ben. In fact, if he does come up in her podcasts, he is only known as NAME REDACTED. Well, he is back, knocking on her door after she just kicked her current boyfriend out. Ben's grandmother has passed and he reminds Dee of that promise from years ago that they would visit her home, and at least dig up the time capsule they buried the one and only time Dee met Ben's grandmother.

Dee finds that she must fulfill her promise and accompany Ben on the thousand mile trek to his grandmother's home. During their travels, and as the story is related in their alternating points of view, one thing is made clear. They never stopped loving one another. However, with so much baggage to sort through, they each explore their feelings all while those long ago feelings quickly begin to resurface.

What an enjoyable read, and right on time for the summer. Second chance romances are always enjoyable to me and this one definitely hit the spot.

Many thanks to Berkley Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Aaaand here is another romcom that I am now obsessed with. It has become a part of my identity and wedged into the same compartment of my brain that Every Summer After is in.

But seriously, if you loved that book, you will love this one too!! I can’t recommend enough.

Childhood friends to lovers? Check. Hilarious main character with a special brand of sassy energy? Check. Smoking hot love interest with a heart of gold? Check. I just can’t deal with the perfection.

I really liked the podcast aspect of the story. It was something that I don’t see often in books, and the banter was amazing.

I loved Dee and Ben together and I felt like I really got to know them on such a personal level. I don’t know if I’ve ever enjoyed two characters so much! Dee was so funny and vulnerable and unique without trying too hard. Ben was a total sweetheart. The love they expressed for each other was perfect and precious and I couldn’t get enough.

There’s so much I want to say but I don’t want to give too much away. I’m just going to say (again) that you need to read it. Please go read it. The end.

Thank you to Berkley Publishing Group for my gifted copy! I’ve posted a review on Goodreads and Bookstagram (@janinesbookcorner).

Short synopsis: 10 years after their big falling out, Dee and Ben go on their promised road trip across country to dig up a time capsule buried in Ben’s Grandma’s backyard.

My thoughts: Ben and Dee are the best! He’s serious and carries cleaning products with him everywhere, she spunky and not afraid to say it like it is.

I hate miscommunication, so the fact that these Best Friends went 10 years without talking really irks me, but their second chance romance is so sweet. I loved the way the author told the story through them reliving the past and reconciliation rather than flashbacks. It was a fun format.

Also, the add ins of the podcasts were done so well and added so much more depth to the story overall.

I did a mix of audio and ebook reading on this and loved the audio! The podcast section especially was so good on audio!

Read if you’re a sucker for:

* Road Trip snacks
* His/Hers POV
* Podcasts

Childhood friends-to-lovers, second-chance romance seems to be a common theme right now and this should be added to the beach read TBR. I loved so many parts of this and had major Emily Henry vibes reading it. I adored the podcast transcripts in between chapters (especially the ones towards the end - iykyk) and the dual POV. F2L is not always a win for me because I don't like drawn out tension and unspoken pining for too long and this was timed perfectly from when they realized their feelings and faced them. The road trip to Gams, the time capsule, home & away, finding Abe - all such tender touches. I still don't understand how best friends could completely cut off contact for a decade but I guess it can happen. The epilogue and team line-up at the end was so heartwarming and awesome.

Another great @aotmbookclub read with the #arcenablers!

Dee's podcast knows no bounds except who Name Redacted is. Otherwise, she's a completely open book. A planned break coincides with Ben - aka Name Redacted - showing up on her doorstep unannounced and begging for her to take a trip with him from Illinois to Chicago. He says he'll wait one hour for her decision while she's waited ten years without a peep from him.
The beginning and ending are fabulous. Bridget has a terrific premise and hook that invested me immediately. However, I struggled with some of the why's and how's and transitions between their heart-to-hearts and their return to childhood games. Dee's agreement to go didn't make sense in context and the middle was quite fluffy in comparison to the bookends of beginning and conclusion. Despite some of their hurts and questionable choices, their chemistry and love for each other is palpable and Ben is an utter sweetheart.
Thank you to Berkley and NetGalley for the advanced copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

I constantly have problems with second chance romance tropes because I find betrayals hard to forgive. With that being said, A Thousand Miles has a second chance romance trope with a bit of a friends-to-lovers trope as well.

I already knew that I was going to have problems with this book. I find a second chance trope hard to read. And I was right about how I felt because the more I read this book, the more I got frustrated. Let me explain.

We don’t get all of the backstory between the two former friends. They stopped talking to each other years ago. Except they are reunited again with their road trip pact. It makes no sense to me why either of them are agreeing to this trip. And they don’t even approach the subject of why they stopped talking to each other years ago.

Despite their lack of communication, I find their romance too slow paced for my taste. It was not going anywhere. They kept avoiding the subject. They kept denying their attraction, which I have not seen. They just keep avoiding everything. It was too much of a go-around for this book.

THIS IS NOW MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD BEST FRIENDS TO LOVERS ROMANCE.

you have two best friends who were everything to each other growing up who didn’t have the capability to process their feelings for one another which led to 10 years without any contact.

ben shows up on dee’s doorstep and says a single phrase that changes everything, a promise is a promise. with that alone, dee and ben embark on a road trip they promised to once again take with each other someday.

dee has a podcast where people come on and spill secrets. throughout all the podcast she talks about someone called named redacted. never spoiling his identity, you learn glimpses of their interaction when they were younger.

the book did start off a little slow for me but as you follow them through their road trip, you start to fall in love with these characters.

it’s clear that these two were meant for each other and you get witness them realizing how they’ve never fallen out of love with each other even if they didn’t realize it when they were younger.

the way both of them talk about each other makes me want to cry, scream and throw up. both of them have insecurities they need to face before finally being together and their conversations are so realistic and raw.

will protect dee and ben with my entire life and will now read anything this author writes.

🌟 BLOG TOUR REVIEW 🌟
A Thousand Miles

Berkley Publishing Group, Berkley

True romantics will adore this fun and utterly compelling story about Dee, cohost of the popular podcast, Did I Forget To Tell You?, and Ben, her once best friend estranged for 10 years. When circumstances pull them together for a road trip, we're pulled in too, intrigued by their attempts to repair a once spectacularly ended connection. I loved both characters, their endearing flaws, and this sweet second chance gem that boosted my spirits.

Thanks to @bridgetjmorrissey, @berkleypub, and @netgalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine.

A Thousand Miles by Bridget Morrissey is an estranged friends-t0-lovers romance that features a road trip! I absolutely loved this heart-warming novel. Many thanks to the publisher for the review copy. <3

Books about road trips always make me excited! And A Thousand Miles was no different. The setup of this particular road trip is quite different, seeing that it was also a reunion between two former best friends who haven't spoken to each other for a decade after a fallout. So yes, my friends, there was drama, and I loved every single moment. The story followed some of my favorite tropes - second chance romance and forced proximity. I loved how the author executed them with the storyline.

The author's writing style is so simple yet so beautiful. She managed to capture the feelings of the characters so thoughtfully with her words. Her way of writing made me connect to Ben and Dee on a deeper level. I loved their back-and-forths, witty banter, and wholesome conversations. There's something so profound in seeing characters look back into the past and reflect on the decisions they made in the present time. Ben and Dee did that a lot, and of course, I loved those moments.

Ben and Dee were such well-written characters. Their lives/back stories had a lot of layers, which made them so real to me. I loved how even after not speaking for 10 years, they understood each other so well. The way the conflict got resolved made my heart glow, honestly. The chemistry they shared + the way they cared about each other so deeply made this book really unique to me. The family theme was one of the highlights of reading A Thousand Miles! The chapters with Dee's podcast added such a charming charm to the storyline as well.

ATM was a package of everything I love in a romance novel. I cannot recommend it enough. I can't wait to read more of the author's books!

This was the sweetest friends to lovers romance between estranged high school besties. It’s the perfect read for summer, whether you’re reading by a lake, a beach, your pool, or on your couch. There is so much depth to the characters between themselves and their lives apart from each other. The writing was so beautiful and at times it was very raw and emotional. There are many nostalgic moments shared between them that adds to the chemistry they share. The time they spend together in their long road-trip forces them to relive their past, the good & the bad, as well as rekindle that spark they had a decade ago.

Ben & Dee made a promise to each other when they were 18 years old of taking a road-trip to uncover a time capsule they dug in Ben’s grandmothers backyard. The only issue is that they had a fall out 10 years ago, and haven’t seen or spoken to each other since. Also, Ben has came to the conclusion that he has feelings for Dee, he always has, but will she feel the same way or will he even have the courage to tell her how he feels for her.

If you’re a fan of road-trips, podcasts, and friends to lovers romance, this one is for you!

You can expect:
* Friends to Lovers
* Road trip + Podcast
* Second Chance Romance
* Forced Proximity
* Lots of Nostalgic Moments
* Emotional Rediscovery
* Family Dynamics

[I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book]

A Thousand Miles by Bridget Morrissey tells the story of Dee Matthews and Ben Porter in a contemporary romance. The book follows a childhood friends-to-lovers and second-chance romance between Ben and Dee.

Dee is the co-host of a well-known podcast called “Did I Forget To Tell You?” where she interviews family, friends, and past lovers. She talks in length about everyone she has encountered except for one man who the show knows as “Name Redacted”. This man is none other than Dee’s high school best friend, Ben. During their senior year, Dee and Ben take a road trip to visit Ben’s grandmother’s home and bury a time capsule in her backyard. They decide to re-visit the capsule in 10 years to reminisce over the treasures they left behind, however, they haven’t spoken since.

Ben’s life is unexciting and mundane until his grandmother reveals a family secret that changes Ben’s world. Her dying wish is for Ben to start living his life and go after what he wants. Ben begins by showing up at Dee's place to fulfill their promise of revisiting the time capsule. As the two reunite for a road trip they promised to take when they were younger, feelings resurface, and although their last trip ended in disaster, the two question if this road trip can bring them together and help push them into a future together.

I’m a sucker for friends-to-lovers AND second-chance romances so this had all the tropes I LOVE. The story is told in alternating POVs and I loved reading from both Dee and Ben’s perspectives. I loved the banter between Dee and Ben and seeing the characters grow individually and together throughout the book. This was my first time reading a book by Bridget Morrissey and it was beautifully written.

Forced proximity, second chance, friends to lovers, road trip adventures and those are just a few of the tropes to name a few.

Dee and Ben were childhood friends before they took this trip the first time... 10 years ago but that was before everything had changed. After the initial trip the two had a big falling out and haven’t spoken in TEN YEARS.

Dee has made a name for herself in the podcasting world. She has a podcast where she essentially spills all her deepest and most personal secrets on air to everyone. She’s wild and fun and doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her.

Ben is a school teacher. He had dreams of being a pro baseball player when things didn’t quite go his way. He’s predictable and reliable.

After ten long years Ben shows up on Dee’s door asking her to make this trip across the country to Gam’s once more and this time, she’s determined to do everything right. She won’t lose him again.

I absolutely ADORED this book! I loved the chemistry between the characters and the banter/inside jokes. The way that their past was explored slowly and everything was talked about instead of rushed just for the sake of romance. I love that Dee kept her quirkiness and chaotic energy throughout the whole book and didn’t have to change who she was.

Thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

A Thousand Miles was an enjoyable road trip romance, great for easy summer reading! Dee and Ben were childhood best friends, who reconciled after ten years apart to take a road trip and dig up a time capsule at Ben's grandmother's house. Their adventures together were very entertaining to read. I particularly enjoyed the scene involving a stray cat and a major league baseball stadium.

My only complaint is that I didn't really understand the reason for Dee and Ben's estrangement. It seemed like a simple miscommunication that could have been resolved very easily. Ben's conflict with his family also seemed to be solved very quickly (after a lot of build-up.) However, I did think the third act break-up was handled very maturely and made sense for the characters' journeys, both together and individually.

A Thousand Miles would be a great vacation read, particularly for anyone embarking on a summer road trip of their own!

I’m starting to find out that I really enjoy books that involve a road trip. I don’t tend to read a lot of second-chance romance with forced proximity, however, I really enjoyed this one.

These characters were so beautifully written. I felt attached and connected to them both. The whole traveling experience had me so invested and I couldn’t put this down. I also really enjoy this author’s writing style, it flows so smoothly throughout the whole book.

Dee’s podcast was so interesting, it was so authentic and added so much to the story. It also provided more about who Dee was. I feel like throughout the book, Dee became more confident in herself and her personality grew a lot because of Ben.

I also really enjoyed Ben’s character. He’s very sweet, caring, and insecure at times - which made him even more relatable. The way he treated everyone around was so wholesome and I just really connected with his character.

I just loved both of these characters and their journey across the states. Their relationship was absolutely touching and I really cared for them both.

I highly recommend this to all my second-chance romance lovers. These characters themselves are worth the read. Five glowing stars!!!

Thank you so much Berkley Romance for the free review copy!

Happy Pub Day to A Thousand Miles by @bridgetjmorrissey, a friends-to-lovers, second chance romance roadtrip that I kept hoping was never going to end.

Ben and Dee were best friends as kids and all through high school until something happened their senior year involving a road trip, Twizzlers, and a Nickelback poster that ended their friendship. They haven’t spoken in 10 years. Dee has a successful podcast called Did I Forget to Tell You? which features Ben and their story prominently but he’s only ever referred to as “name redacted.” Ben teaches one state over and was living a comfortable, but exciting life until a secret turned his world upside down. When he shows up at Dee’s door asking her for the redo of their road trip they promised they’d make the first time, she can’t help but say yes.

I really, really loved this book. It was funny and cringey and almost made me cry a bunch of times and the writing was just beautiful. I loved both characters, which is rare, and I even kind of understood how all the nonsense could happen between them. There’s wonderful banter and some hard stuff about family and a real sense of how important friendship is in person’s life. There are also snippets of Dee’s podcast that are laced throughout that are very funny and an unexpected sweet cat for all you animal lovers out there.

A Thousand Miles definitely felt like a cousin to Emily Henry’s People We Meet On Vacation. I hesitated to write that line, because I think comparing any book or writer to Emily Henry is putting a lot of possibly unfair pressure on a book, but I mean it in the absolute best way. I think anyone who enjoyed that book—and I know there were a lot of us—will find something to love in this one.

The thing I loved the most about this book was the care the characters took with each other. It was really, really beautiful to read and it had my very favorite kind of ending where both characters own their part in the journey instead of one taking all the blame.

Thank you so much to @berkleypub, @letstalkbookspromo and @netgalley for a copy of this one. I’m pretty sure I will end up buying it as well so I have a copy.

This book was an absolute pleasure to read. It had some of my favorite tropes- second chances, friendship, and a ton of witty banter. I always enjoy a good road trip story so I was extra excited to read this one. I really enjoyed the chapters that were told in Podcast format. It definitely added a ubique experience while reading. If you are in the mood for a heart wrenching contemporary I think this one is for you!

On the surface, A Thousand Miles is comparable to other recent – and popular – contemporary romances like People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry, Every Summer After by Carley Fortune, and A Lot Like Adiós by Alexis Daria. Like those novels, A Thousand Miles looks at two former friends who haven’t spoken in a while… not since they were on the edge of a romantic partnership and then something went sour. It’s a second chance between best friends, and like People, this throws them together in a short vacation across the US. Close quarters provides plenty of time to talk through those old issues… but also a chance for all the feelings to come right back.

Both Dee and Ben are charming and refreshingly real characters. I feel like I could have known them in high school; they couldn’t have been more than two or three years younger than me, based on their musical references. Dee, in particular, has a lot in common with me… apart from her brash and adventurous attitude, at least.

I love how into astrology Dee is, going beyond surface level sun signs and moving deeper into moon signs, rising signs, and the placement of planets in different houses. Astrology is a fun way to understand the nuances of Dee and Ben’s characters, but it’s also something that endears me to her.

The other detail that stands out to me is the prevalence of music. Ben once had a YouTube channel dedicated to album reviews, and he and Dee bonded over their shared love of Paramore. Dee’s mention of their song “Misguided Ghosts” – a deep cut! – was perfect, and her “breakup” from Ben happened sometime after Brand New Eyes in 2009 and before Paramore in 2013. Dee later describes “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers as the “millennial siren song” and, well, she’s not wrong. Never mind that A Thousand Miles shares a title with Vanessa Carlton’s 2002 hit single. The music vibes are strong throughout the book, and I absolutely love it.

Some deeper themes that appear in A Thousand Miles and stand out are discussions of mental health and money issues. Dee grew up poor, and she’s touchy when it comes to money; I can relate. But she’s also faced family issues, and openly talks about how helpful therapy has been for her. Considering the grief and family drama Ben is now going through, he could also benefit from therapy.

The cat, Abe, is another highlight here. I shan’t say too much more, but Abe’s appearance, the love he inspires, and the chaos that ensues are all delightful. As a cat lover myself, any novel with a feline character automatically gets bonus points in my book.

Throughout A Thousand Miles, Ben and Dee’s relationship takes center stage. I love how goofy and lighthearted their conversations usually are. They’re filled with inside jokes and references only the two of them would understand. It makes them feel like two friends who really spent the entirety of their formative years together. While Ben is generally an easy-going, sweet guy who clams up with his emotions get to him, Dee is the opposite: brave, loud, spiky. She can be abrasive at times, yet she’s also so full of life and fun. They play off each other well here, but we get extra charm as their layers are pulled back and they’re put into different situations.

Between chapters, the novel is punctuated with occasional snippets of Dee’s podcast that she co-hosts with her friend, Javi. These seemingly random conversations add extra dimension into Dee’s worldview and her relationship with Name Redacted (aka Ben).

A Thousand Miles is a sweet and subtly emotional book. It highlights a years-long friendship and all the inside jokes and secret worlds that develop therein, shows how small issues can break all that apart, and how two people can grow enough that, in time, they’ll be ready for each other. If you like second-chance romances, friends-to-lovers, and road trips, this is the perfect book to curl up with.

I think that estranged friends to lovers books might not be for me. I spent awhile trying to figure out what had happened between them to cause the estrangement, and like in a similar book, it was hard for me to understand. I also found the timing of events to be confusing and while I respect a good road trip, I felt as though some of the scenes didn't add much to the blooming romance. Dee and Ben were characters that I grew to like, but I just wish that growth had been earlier in the book.

I loved the podcast episodes and that element of mixed media.

Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A Thousand Miles had clever characters, a wonderful premise of regaining a lost friendship, and beautifully written dialog. Dee Matthews brought life to these pages with her will to say and be what Ben needed despite having huge feelings over the ending of their best-friend status in high school. Ben’s grandmother dying and a secret she revealed to him is the impetus behind him asking Dee to go on this trip with him. She was his most supportive person, the one that was always there for him despite her quirkiness and anti-social personality. He was the staid, steady popular kid that was drawn to this bright person from early childhood. Not to say that their relationship was one-sided, that steadiness was something that Dee was drawn to as well. Her childhood was filled with uncertainty, no money, and low social status. When he shows up at her door, she doesn’t really even think twice about it, she packs a bag and agrees to go. You’ve got to admire that ability to make a hard choice based on a thread of hope that they would find their way back together.

Despite their fun adventures and the moments of giddiness, this was kind of a hard book for me to read. There were just so many feelings! Dee’s feelings of abandonment, Ben’s realization that he never takes chances, their lost ten years. Aargh! I just wanted to skip through the discovery and get to the why! I was really impatient with this novel through no faults of it’s own. I just really wanted to see if this author was going to take me where I wanted this plot to go. I reigned myself in and vowed patience. I would allow this story to unfold at the pace it was meant to be read, and I was so happy that I allowed myself to do that. Dee and Ben’s trip was funny, fun, sad, and again, made me feel everything I was meant to feel.

A large part of this novel is about Dee’s podcast. Ben, as Name Redacted, is an integral character that Dee references all the time. Each chapter starts with an episode of a podcast where we get to know Dee but we also get to know Ben, or at least her underlying feelings for him. Some of these podcasts were hilarious and her co-host Javi is a guy I’d love to know in real life. Anyway, these episodes are a great tool for the reader to learn her feelings without seeing her go through all of the emotions. It’s also integral to her personality and character. Even with Ben she speaks as if she’s recording an episode. I found it really interesting to see her journey on her show at the same time as the journey they were taking in the car. Well done!

Despite my own awkward feelings while reading this novel, I thought it was great. There was humor, drama, and love that practically made my chest explode with feelings. All of the qualifications of a good romance novel, isn’t it? ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley or my honest review and it was honest!
