Sugar + Salt is a beautifully crafted story, incorporating the really tough topics of date rape and racism. Susan Wiggs grabs the reader’s attention with strong character development.

This story is a winner. I couldn't put it down. At first I thought, oh no, another foodie story, but this one has so much more. There is a romance that doesn't go smoothly. In fact there are a couple of them. In both, the couples are mixed race. The main characters have interesting back stories and these are the heart of the book. The story hits on so many contemporary issues besides the mixed race relationships including rape, a corrupt justice system, poverty, abortion rights, adoption, and same sex couples, All these are woven into a fast paced and very entertaining book. I recommend it to anyone looking for a great contemporary read.

I have to admit, "Sugar and Salt" by Susan Wiggs grabbed my attention by the cover. I love her books and this was a good one!

In many ways this was a charming, uplifting book about love and second chances. Through the stories of two couples we watch love blossom when it was least expected to. There are also some fantastic stories of food and the highs and lows of restauranteering that I very much enjoyed. For me, however, some of the backstories were overly dramatic and populated with the worst kind of negative stereotype characters. I'm a big Susan Wiggs fan and have read all of her books, but the one backstory -- which extended through a significant chunk of the book -- left me very unhappy. If you like drama (and lots of people love it!) and don't mind bad guys who are over the top evil and victims who are caught in blatantly terrifying and unfair circumstances, then you will love thi portion of the book as well as the parts I did like!

This story delivered so much more than I expected it to. It's a gentle love story, but it has much to say in terms of social justice and victims of sexual assault.. It added a lot of depth to the book and made the characters even more relatable. An excellent book that I am looking forward to recommending.

A novel full of food and secrets! Sugar and Salt follows the story of Margot Salton, a Texas BBQ master looking to set up her own restaurant in San Francisco. The restaurant she establishes shares a kitchen with the bakery Sugar. Margot is very successful but she's been running from a huge secret that eventually catches up to her. The story was not told in a linear fashion which added to the intrigue. Some very heavy topics were covered but all is well in the end.

Classic Susan Wiggs! I love the depth of the plot and characters. Wiggs takes an awful event in the main characters life and uses it as a springboard of her life. Most people would wallow in the horribleness of the event. But this main character becomes stronger and uses it to search and fulfill her life's ambition.

I always enoy books authored by Susan Wiggs but this was by far the most enjoyable. I loved Margot's story including her falling in love with a bi-racial man and have a gay couple adopt her child who was conceived as a result of rape. I did not want to put this story down and in fact wish it would continue.

SUGAR AND SALT is the newest addition to author Susan Wiggs’ series where food and cooking conquer past hardships that serve to keep love at bay for her characters. Author Wiggs manages to fold in topical issues of trauma for her characters, while gently educating and entertaining, her readers. In SUGAR AND SALT, she covers multiple generations of pain and love lost, offering perspective and a sense of change. Barbecue and amazing desserts are the tempting food items for this book and recipes are included in the back. Ultimately, this is a cozy book and the mysteries go down as easy as the food descriptions. But the characters are winning and the San Francisco Bay Area locale is a pleasure. I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
