Really enjoyed this. Gripping with tension and biting my nails from the first page to the very last! I don't even know what else to say. One of the best psychological thrillers I've read in awhile, with extra ick factor. Probably won't be for everyone. TW include hostage, kidnapping, child endangerment. You are never quite sure who to trust and the alternating timeline gives clues to a terrible tragedy while also building tension and curiosity about the events that lead to this. Once you find out what happens, you're both horrified and relieved, only to be thrown through another fast-paced twisty loopy build-up to a perfect last page ending, in my opinion, but might be a bit over the top for some. If you like twisty psychological thrillers, give this one a go.

Wow. As a new mother, this book gripped me like no other because it was such a nightmare. I kept putting myself in Victoria’s shoes and needed to keep reading to find out what was going to happen to Danny!! I enjoyed the twist, but felt it was wrapped up too quickly. Overall, this was a gripping read that caused many sleepless nights because I just had to keep reading!!

This is a fast paced thriller that will keep you guessing. The characters, the atmosphere, the suspense, the creepiness are all top notch. I devoured this book wanting to know what happened. There are twists and turns throughout the story all the way up until the end. Well done!

The Guest House, by Robin Morgan-Bentley, is a tension-filled psychological thriller that is wrought with anxiety and anticipation as events unfold.

This novel contains a rather terrifying premise, a couple, Jamie, who owns a fraud protection company and suffers from cerebral palsy, and Victoria, a musician who only occasionally performs, are expecting their first baby. They decide that a final getaway is needed and they choose a countryside getaway, similar to a bed and breakfast. They awake the first morning to find their hosts gone, devices taken and their doors locked. The panic is palpable on every page, and as Victoria goes into labor soon after arriving, the situation rapidly escalates.

This story is told from two primary timeframes, until the ending. The sections from the past divulge the intense and mystifying events that occurred the first day at the Guest House. The second perspective is a month later, in the aftermath of the tragic events that the couple underwent. They have come home without their expected son and lies are told to all, but why?The conclusion takes us into the present just as all the events are culminating and what has actually transpired is revealed.

The Guest House is a menacing, creepy story, and while reading it, I found myself filled with dread, hesitation, and oddly a bit of boredom. Halfway through the novel, I found myself wanting to skip through to the end to see how it all wrapped up, and when I eventually reached the conclusion, I was a bit underwhelmed. Though the story was eerie and certainly unique, I felt rather detached from the characters, and the manner in which the plot played out didn’t quite captivate me and motivate me to continue reading, like I’d anticipated. I’m sure others will be thrilled with this atmospheric story, and I enjoyed elements of it, but it wasn’t an instant and overall hit for me.

What an absolutely fun ride domestic mystery-thriller with a clever twist in the end!

Jamie and a very pregnant Victoria vacation to a secluded guest house (AirBnB?) before the baby is due. However Victoria’s contractions become imminent next morning. Victoria needs to be taken to the hospital right away. But the problem? They are locked in the guest house and their car keys are stolen as well. The book is divided into the past - with everything that happened in the guest house, and the present - life after the guest house.

Obviously we learn early on that the couple made it out alive but something terrible has happened during their stay, and the only way to remedy the situation is going back. However Victoria and Jamie also unravel a lot of skeletons in their closet and must come to terms with events that took place in their past, as well as solve the imminent crisis they’re facing as parents. I was extremely surprised to learn that the author is a man because he describes the pregnancy pains and a mother’s grief SO REMARKABLY. I am not a mother but even I felt very emotional reading about Victoria’s pains. I also felt that the women in the book - even though they were unlikeable and questionable - were treated with so much respect, which in turn really makes me respect the author. I really loved one character and hated the other. However throughout the book, I kept wondering why Jamie and Victoria made stupid decisions as parents, but you will understand when you read to the end. All in all, a great story that shows you sometimes even your most trusted partner really isn’t what they seem.

This is a Psychological Thriller. The beginning of this book was slow to get going, but once I got into the story I was pulled into it. There was something in this book that made my TTC journey and my twin boys NICU stay memories flash back. I have never been trigger while reading any books, but this one got me. I do not think there was anything super triggering in this book it was a lot of the stuff in this book I could connect with. One of my twin boys has CP because he stopped breathing just before the doctor got him out during the c-section. He falls a lot when he gets tired, and he is slower than kids his age. Lucky, his twin will tell everyone to stop and wait for him. I feel this book did a good job showing CP. The ending of this book was just wonderful, and I did not see it ending like it did. I really enjoyed seeing this story unfold even if it took me a little bit longer to read because I had to put it down a couple of times when the flashbacks of things from my past became too much. I really loved the character that had CP. This book takes you on a wild ride, but I also think it also brings awareness to CP. For me the Guest House was not my favorite. To talk about the good things first, the author was good at creating suspense and doling out details in a way to keep you reading. However, none of the characters were likeable at all. Additionally, I think this should have a huge trigger warning for women who are pregnant, with young children, or who have miscarried. Additionally, I found the Jaime's disability to be a distraction throughout the book. Overall, I am unsure if I didn't like it because it dealt with a newborn or just because the characters were just dislikable.

Jamie and Victoria have been trying to have a baby for a long time. When they finally succeed they decide to go off for the last holiday with just them shortly before the baby is due. So of course they go someplace isolated off in the wilds of England which is what you do when you could go into labor any day now. When they wake up the next morning to find themselves locked in the house and their phones and car keys are gone, of course, Victoria goes into labor. Their helpless panic in the situation struck me poorly. Why not smash a window and hotwire the car.

Their strange hosts return with a ridiculous demand and an unexpected turn of events lead Jamie and Victoria into hot water. They lose their baby and Jamie is obsessed with fixing everything.

There is a lot of back and forth in time, a ploy to keep us in suspense because a chronological story would mean there was no mystery at all.



The Guest House is suspenseful but I occasionally found it tedious. Robin Morgan-Bentley really wants to tie up every loose end, some he should have let dangle. I know nothing about his writing process so this is reckless speculation, but the book feels as though it was written with the organizational help of one of those book-writing programs. A lot of authors use them and they are perfectly legitimate. They don’t come up with ideas or craft beautiful sentences and metaphors. They keep track of things you might forget in the midst of a few hundred pages. So we get the truth about an event long ago in Victoria’s past. Did we need that?

My big complaint though is that Jamie is too good a person. He is too forgiving and just not equipped with the normal human levels of spite, pettiness, and revenge. I just can’t be interested in a character who doesn’t feel real. Victoria, on the other hand, felt equally unreal, but for different reasons, but at least she is a complicated person.

A fast paced thriller with all the twists and turns and it started off in an explosive manner. There was continuous urgency with each chapter when we find Jamie and Victoria are back home from their baby moon vacation but there is no baby. The ending twist was crazy and I definitely did not see it coming. Both the main characters were not that likeable but I felt satisfied with how it ended.

Wow was this book good. I had never heard of this author or even this book before taking a chance in requesting it here but I’m so glad I did it kept me entertained the whole time. The story went I a totally different direction than I originally thought and totally twisted in the last 10 percent. Thanks NetGalley for the ARC looking forward to reading more from this author

An excellent story full of unexpected bends and curves. I read this with my mind darting back and forth on what would I do if this was happening to me. There’s a major surprise that really ties the story lines together. It’s a great suspenseful read.

Solid thriller, more of a 3.5 but rounding down for review purposes because sometimes the first person narration seemed overly simple. Very quick, fast paced read, and the beginning ratcheted up my medical anxiety to an 11 on the dial. It definitely made me second guess staying in an Airbnb and I already had too much pregnancy anxiety to be down with the concept of a babymoon. Reading so many thrillers, I can usually see the twist coming miles away, but in this case the twist surprised me and if there was any foreshadowing, I missed it. The epilogue felt a little forced, trying to get one last bombshell in, but it fell flat for me. Overall a quick, enjoyable read.

This book freaked me out right from the start. It opens with a pregnant couple waking up in the countryside when the wife goes into labor. The couple can't find the keys to their car. But that doesn't matter because they're locked inside the house, and their hosts are gone.

I thought this was going to be some horror story where the house is controlled by some evil being, and this young couple is doomed to stay inside the house forever--or something like that. But the story is much more disturbing than what I had imagined, and I couldn't get it out of my mind. I'd go to bed thinking about the book, and I'd wake up thinking about the book. If you love creepy psychological thrillers set in the English countryside, this book is for you!

I can't remember the last time I finished a book as quickly as I finished this one. Robin Morgan-Bentley has become one of my new favorite authors.

I didn’t like any of the characters which made this one fall a little flat in parts for me. But wow did some of the twists really take you to crazy land! And The ending I did not totally see coming. Overall quick domestic suspense.

Jamie and Victoria are expecting their first baby.
With a few weeks to go, they head off for a final weekend break in a remote part of the North Pennines. The small and peaceful guesthouse is the ideal location to unwind together before becoming parents. Upon arrival, they are greeted by Barry and Fiona, the older couple who run the guesthouse. They cook them dinner and show them to their room before retreating to bed themselves.
The next morning, Jamie and Victoria wake to find the house deserted. Barry and Fiona are nowhere to be seen. All the doors are locked. Both their mobile phones and car keys have disappeared. Even though it's a few weeks early, Victoria knows the contractions are starting.
The baby is coming, and there's no way out.

A super chilling book with a lot of secrets. The cover alone drew me in and the story kept me reading. It is told in a dual timeline, before Danny is born and after. The dual timelines give you information just with you need it. I won’t give anything away but you will want to read this book until the very end!
