Vivid and lush - this quickly ensnares your heart and takes you on an adventure you won’t want to leave. Complete with a love story fit for an epic fantasy, you will fall in love with everything and everyone.

I really loved this and devoured it in a couple of hours. The narrator was perfect and the plot was divine. I especially adored how Dai and Miki fits into Mina’s life - it actually brought tears to my eyes.

Highly recommend this!

This was a beautiful story to listen to, so wonderfully written and a loving story of friendship and found family. I loved the world building and the incorporation of storytelling within the story of Mina and the Sea God. Axie Oh has quickly become one of my favorite authors and I look forward to reading more books from her! Thank you Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for the ALC 💙 One of my favorite quotes: “wait for me where the land meets the sea” 🌊

I enjoyed this audiobook. The narration was peaceful and pleasant. Theworld- building was strong. The audio gave me the feeling of being read to under a tree or near a fireplace.

This book is not what I generally read, but I majored in Korean Culture in college and Shimcheongga is my favorite pansori so when I heard about this book, based on Shim Cheong's folklore I knew I had to read it! The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea was absolutely beautiful story! I absolutely loved the more feminist take and making this story about deciding your own fate. I honestly wish the book was longer because there were so many interesting side characters that I came to care about so much! If you love Studio Ghibli and Spirited Away, you're going to enjoy this book. I'll definitely be buying myself a copy and probably getting one as a gift to my old Korean Women's Studies professor as a gift!

As for the narrator, it took a couple chapters for me to get used to her voice, but by the end I really enjoyed it.

Thank you to Netgalley, Axie Oh, and Dreamscape Media for the Audiobook ARC in exchange for an honest review!

The Girl who fell Beneath The Sea by Alex Oh is a whimsical folklore retelling masterfully exploring themes of identity, memory, and destiny while delighting it’s reader with fantastic setting and cast. The Audiobook version builds on this already wonderful writing by providing the listener with beautiful narration.

Fans of such classics as Spirited away will find themselves right at home as they follow our main character’s antics in the Spirit world. 5/5 stars looking forward to purchasing a physical copy upon release .

This immersive YA Fantasy gripped me from the first chapter! I could live in this magical world forever. The writing was absolutely stunning and I’m sad it’s over! I listened to this on audiobook and the narration was beautiful and did this story justice!

We follow Mina is she is on a journey to save her city from the wrath of the Sea God. To do so she volunteers to be the Sea God’s bride in place of the woman that her brother loves. Though in the spirit realm things are not what they seem…

Honestly, I don’t want to give away more than that because you need to experience this world all for yourself! This is one of the best YA fantasy worlds I’ve experienced and they author made it very easy to learn the world along the way! Highly recommend picking up this beautiful book when it comes out February 22, 2022!

Thank you to Net Galley and Dreamscape Media for the audio ARC!

The way Axie Oh grabs your attention and creates a world you’ll fully be immersed in after the first few chapters is unreal. UNREAL!

Mina makes the ultimate sacrifice to save her homeland and her brother to accept her fate as becoming the new bride to the infamous Sea God.
As Mina becomes more accustomed to the Spirit Realm, you really begin to see Axie’s natural talent in world building. I could picture everything down to even the minor details of the Sea God’s palace.
With the amount of characters you are introduced to, I was worried the overall story line would suffer. As you can imagine, my initial reservations were unmerited. The pacing of the story is well kept.

I was given the opportunity to listen to The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea as an audiobook through Dreamscape Publishing. Narrator, Rosa Escoda, brings each character to life with ease. Her ability to give each character their own sense of identity leaves a lasting impression.

I will be pre ordering this book for my personal collection and will be suggesting this book to anyone who will listen to me sing this book’s praises! Thank you again to Dreamscape Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I received an audiobook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I had some issues with this, but let's start with what I enjoyed.
I really enjoyed all of the Spirited Away vibes, and I think that Oh shines with her prose first and foremost. I am all about "just vibing" as we can tell by the fact that The Starless Sea and The Raven Cycle being some of my absolute favorite books. However, we have to have vibes and substance which is where I felt that this was ultimately lacking.

The characters let me down, and I felt like all the relationships and character traits they were supposed to have were mainly made known by telling rather than showing. Along with this, the pacing felt very off to me. We started out with a bang of an introduction, and then it felt like a fairly big lull between that and the ending. If we had spent that time growing the characters and their relationship, I would've enjoyed this a lot more.

I also feel like this is another case of YA just not being as easy for me to personally connect with, even though I keep trying because there are always YA books that fly to my favorites list each year. This felt very surface level to me, despite the fact that it takes place quite literally under the sea.

As for the audiobook performance, I can't tell if it's just since I had to listen via the NetGalley shelf and the quality didn't sound like it was fully rendered, or maybe I am just much picky with audiobook narrators than I realized. I do think I would've enjoyed the book more if I had been able to read it physically. However, I probably will not ever reread this one.

I am very thankful for the opportunity to read an early copy, as this was on my most anticipated books for this entire year. So a huge thank you to NetGalley for the early copy.
Rounding up to a 3 star because I believe many will really enjoy this one when it comes out in a couple of weeks!

"You have to believe in something to be a God of it." -From The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea

5 stars

From the start just looking at this gorgeous cover, I was transported to a fantastic story. Lyrical prose pushes a story about love and sacrifice along. I consumed it all in one day, and only wish there was more. Shin and Mina felt like fully developed characters, and not just stereotypes. Usually, you have to pick if you want a fast-paced story, or one with great character development, but both are found easily here. I would highly recommend this book to any fantasy reader.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Honest thoughts I dropped this one, the story was interesting but then I lost interest. I listen to the audiobook of it and the narrator was great just didn't enjoy the story. The cover is stunning and would love to see it in person one day.
I am very greatfull for getting an ARC audio copy.

3.5/5 stars

I was thrilled to receive access to the audiobook ARC of THE GIRL WHO FELL BENEATH THE SEA. I really enjoyed so much about this beautiful tale, and the narrator did a great job with bringing Mina's story to life. Oh's writing is absolutely gorgeous and her prose lyrical. She does such a beautiful job bringing this story and this magical world to life. This book had the perfect blend of mythology and folklore that really just had a transportive effect as I read, and again, that has a lot to do with the author's talent. I really liked Mina's character as she volunteers to be sacrificed as the Sea God's Bride and finds herself embroiled in matters of the Spirit Realm. I loved the depth of her character, especially in her level-headedness and love for the people she cares for. For that matter, all of the characters, from Shin to the Sea God himself, were multifaceted and compelling. Themes of self-sacrifice, duty and grief all meld together to create a gorgeous fantasy that is guaranteed to entrance. I will say that the only issue I have with audiobooks is my attention span, sometimes I become so engrossed in the things I am doing that I lose track of the plot, and to an extent that happened here, but that is not a reflection on the work or the author.

A beautifully woven tapestry of a tale with lively, lovable characters. I couldn't put this book down--feasting my eyes on it until I was finished with the epic story. Though, it pulls on a Korean folktale for its basis, this story resonates with a wonderful message of the value of friendship, trust, perseverance, and the enduring love of family and friends. Axie Oh crafts a detailed, lyrical fantasy world that you can immerse yourself in. If you find yourself getting lost, just remember that the Red String of Fate will see you through. I look forward to reading more works by this author. Clearly narrated with nice inflections for different characters.

I enjoyed the writing and the premise, and would recommend this book for young audiences (middle grade). That said, the characters and relationships lacked the depth for me to be particularly invested in them.
