Thank you @minotaur_books for the #gifted copy for review.

I read this as a standalone. I have not read any of the other novels in the series. I enjoyed it very much. I enjoyed the character, Kate. I loved the murder mystery aspect of course with just a touch of romance.
This book gave me Father Brown vibes and I was totally down for it. I’ll definitely be checking out more in the series!

Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder police procedural series is still going strong. The Hidden One is the 14th novel in the series, and while readers do not have to read the books in order, it does help clarify many of the characters' relationships.

In this novel, Kate Burkholder is helping out a childhood Amish friend who has been accused of killing an elder in the community. Ever the bridge between the Amish community and their English community counterpoints, Kate must get to the bottom of the evidence to determine what exactly happen.

Another thrilling plot and well loved characters come together in this novel to provide an enjoyable journey for the audience. Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for a copy of this novel.

This is my first read by Linda Castillo. Although it is part of a series, I read it as a stand alone. The cover caught my eye, but the summary really was what convinced me to read this book. The police detective who comes from an Amish background is interesting but then add that she is going to investigate a murder among her Amish people really grabbed my attention. I really like the way that Castillo writes, smooth flow and solid characters. This would make a really good tv series because there are so many interesting characters and sub plots. Twisty plots kept my attention!

Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press - Minotaur Books, and author Linda Castillo for this digital review copy for me to read and enjoy. As always, my reviews are voluntary and my opinions are my own.

I reveived an ARC copy of this book from #Netgalley.

This is the first Linda Castillo book I have read in some time, and I could not put it down. She is an exceptional writer and can suck you into the story with just the first paragraph.

I really enjoyed learning more about Kate's background and seeing her come to terms with part of it. Her character has grown quite a bit since the first book. The plot was very engaging and itvreall kept me guessing until the end. I can't wait to go back and read all of the books I've missed.

I've been reading this series for years and if it's possible it just keeps getting better and better. Linda Castillo has a way of describing Amish life and what it's like to have to leave that life. She does a wonderful job in depicting what it means to be Amish and how they live.

Kate Burkholder used to be Amish. Now she's the Chief of police of Painter's Hills.
When an Amish Bishop's bones are recovered by a local farmer many questions arise especially considering the Bishop has been missing for a decade. Kate believes she has no connection to this case until the Elders arrive asking for her help. It seems the main suspect is her very first love and now he is accused of killing the Bishop. Kate is certain in her belief that Jonas Bowman had nothing to do with the crime but the evidence says otherwise. It appears that Jonas had harsh words for the Bishop before he disappeared and that coupled with the fact that evidence is found on his property Jonas is arrested. The odds are against Kate as someone doesn't want her to find the truth.

I love the twists and turns of this book because it truly kept me guessing. I think Linda Castillo has done a great job at developing her characters and having them grow throughout the series. As always I await the next Kate Burkholder book with bated breath.

Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this book.

The mystery thriller THE HIDDEN ONE, is sleek-executed by the brilliant Linda Castillo, that I savored it at the beginning, and as the suspense intensifies, I voraciously devoured it till the end!
Kate Burkholder was asked by an Amish town’s bishops to help to unearth the truth of an over-a-decade-old murder; however, Kate encountered more questions than answers as she started the investigation!
This is my first book by Linda Castillo, and I enjoyed it tremendously! I highly recommend it to suspense thriller-seeking readers!
I would like to thank NetGalley and Minotaur Books for this thrilling enjoyment.

This quickly drew me in, despite it being different than something I would normally choose to pick up. A good story, full of suspense, mystery, and old feelings, this book gave a glimpse into Amish culture. An enjoyable read.

I realize that his book is part of a series, but it can be read as a stand-alone. I have not read any of the other books in the series, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I will definitely be looking for more by this author.

Kate is happy with her life. She has a job she loves, close friends and a special man she loves. She is trying hard to forget her Amish heritage and her past. Yet she must face it head-on when a special friend from her past needs her help. As she searches for the evidence to show that her friend is innocent of the crime, she uncovers secrets that others want to keep hidden.

Great suspense book that keeps you interested to the end.

First I’d like to thank net galley and St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for my advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

I have read every book in the series and I think this one is my favourite! Getting to experience some of Kates childhood was wonderful. We’ve had glimpses and tidbits into her past in other books but this was so well written and gave us so much, to see the transformation into Chief Burkholdwr.

This sorry line was one of unexpected twists and turns, an adventure that kept me wanting more. I could not put this book down!

Castillo’s latest novel has Kate Burkeholder coming to terms with her past and deciding whether or not some relationships have unfinished business. When a Bishop is found murdered, Kate must decide if her old lover is responsible, or if something more sinister is taking place. As usual with Castillo’s stories, there’s lots of action in Painter’s Mills and the surrounding Amish communities. Recommended for readers who like learning about the Amish community and just like a good mystery!

I was so stoked to win this book. This series is one of my favorites, hands down. I 1) always look forward to a new installment and 2) recommend this series to everyone. Real talk. "The Hidden One" did not disappoint; the only disappointment is how long I'm probably gonna have to wait for book #15!! Keep them coming Linda Castillo!! Thanks Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I love all of Linda Castillo's books. I love getting the ARCs because I just cannot wait until the next one comes out. I did not realize I had not entered my review yet and was so upset because I do not want it to affect my getting another in the future.

Kate Burkholder has to be one of my all-time favorite characters. I love her so much and her backstory for how she became the chief of police. Not the trauma part, but the fact she had to make a choice to stay Amish or leave the community. This book is a little different than the others. We begin in our beloved Painters Mill, Ohio, until a small town in Pennsylvania to investigate a murder that happened long ago, but they are just now convicting someone for the crime. Turns out that someone is high school love of her life, Jonas. He maintains his innocence, and how will Kate look at this case without being bias and serve justice?

This is another great addition to the series!

Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I received a free copy from NetGalley. I have not read any in the series (though I do have one marked as to-read so I must have heard of it at some point) and I was not lost by reading this as a stand alone. I liked the female lead and the nontraditional setting. I look forward to reading others in the series.

I reviewed this on Goodreads but it gives me an error so I can't provide a link. This is twice so I guess I'm done catching up on reviews for the day.

I look forward to a Linda Castillo Amish mystery every year and she doesn’t disappoint. In this one, her main character travels out of state to help an old love involved in a murder mystery. It’s good to get her main character out of an element and the suspense builds to a satisfying conclusion.

One of the things I love about this series is that we learn a little more about Kate and her history. In The Hidden One, we learn about her and her first love, Jonas, as she tries to prove his innocence in an old crime. It wasn't my favorite, but I still enjoyed it. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

The Hidden One - Linda Castillo

It’s a beautiful Saturday in Painters Mill, Ohio and Police Chief Kate Burkholder is out enjoying the morning as she plans to pick up a handcrafted gift for her significant other. Before she can do so, she responds to a call to defuse an argument, then is summoned to police headquarters as she has visitors. Upon her arrival, she sees three Amish elders awaiting her. As they exchange introductions, she learns they have traveled from Belleville, Pennsylvania in hopes of gaining some assistance.

As the group settles in into her office, they explain that skeletal remains of a body were found in a field that was being plowed. The remains were determined to be that of an Amish bishop, Ananias Stoltzfus, who disappeared 18 years ago – and he had been shot. Near the remains, a muzzleloader was found, belonging to one of their people – Jonas Bowman – who was subsequently arrested and jailed for the crime. The Elders have come to ask for Kate’s assistance in proving his innocence. As the reader is quick to learn, Kate and Jonas shared a special friendship in their teen years – before Jonas’ family moved away.

As Kate heads to Pennsylvania to assist and old friend, she reminisces about her childhood memories with Jonas and the reader is given gradual glimpses into the complexity of their relationship within the confines of the Amish lifestyle. Once she arrives, she meets with Jonas in jail to gain his side of the story. He describes a contentious relationship all those years ago, between Ananias and his father, that had once split the community in two. He also admits to having words with the Bishop back then, culminating in vandalism to his property. Then two months later, Ananias disappeared, never to be heard from again – until his remains were found in that field.

As Kate settles in and meets with the not-so-forthcoming police department, the victim’s family, and Jonas’ wife, she finds more questions than answers, along with a strong belief that Jonas is not capable of the crime and is being framed. As she continues to investigate, she suddenly finds herself fending off an attacker in the dead of night in her hotel room who nearly kills her before telling her to leave town. Now she knows for certain that Jonas is innocent, and she’ll do whatever it takes to free him and find the real killer….

This was my first Kate Burkholder novel and I was delighted to learn that this is the newest of a long running series! (If you’ve ever read my other reviews, you’ll know that there’s nothing I love more!) This novel also provided a fascinating glimpse into some inner workings of an Amish society and their lifestyle – all artfully wrapped into an engaging and intriguing who-dun-it!

I have read all of the books in Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder series. And have enjoyed most of them. The Hidden One is one of the better ones later on in the series. I really enjoyed the deeper dive into Kate's Amish upbringing with the description of her relationship with Jonas during her teenage years. I found the "mystery" not too tough to solve and had it mostly figured out before it was all revealed. But the book was still engaging to read despite that. The only downside I found to the book is that I felt like Kate should have/would have had more contact with Tomasetti while she was out of town. Kate can be non-commital when it comes to him, but I would think she would have called and talked to him after she got run off the road. LOL! At any rate, this was a good one in the series to bring a little more depth to Kate's character.

The Hidden One is #14 in the Kate Burkholder series. I might have read one or two books in this series a long time ago, but I didn't have any trouble following this book even though I haven't read the whole series. Chief Burkholder has been asked to help a friend from her past that has been accused of murder. She cannot see how the boy she once knew could be capable of murder and so she heads to Pennsylvania to see if she can help. The murder victim seems to have some secrets that someone wants to keep buried and Kate finds herself more determined to find out what really happened to Bishop Stoltzfus 18 years ago.

This can be read as a standalone or in addition to the rest of the Kate Burkholder Series. It was a quick, fast paced read and I would highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys crime fiction. I liked looking back into Kate's past and seeing her relationship to the accused. Great read.

Really loved this book. It was definitely a page-turner given the mystery as well as the relationships that the characters develop. I also enjoyed the aspect of the Amish (of whom I know a lot). She made them out to be real people instead of caricatures. I would read another by this author for sure!

I somehow missed that this was the 14th book in the Kate Burkholder series until after I started reading it. That said, I think it worked quite well as a standalone. I liked Kate Burkholder as a protagonist and felt like the author gave me enough of her background with respect to the Amish community that I felt like I knew her pretty well. I thought the mystery in this book was very compelling and I also thought the author did a wonderful job of balancing the plot surrounding the murder vs. more personal elements involving Kate and her relationship with the community she left so long ago. I don't know that I'll go back and read all 13 of the books I skipped over, but I could easily see myself picking up at least a few more of the books in this entertaining, well written series.
