This story was unique, and I really enjoyed it. I'm not usually a big fan of stories that have ghosts, but it really worked in this novel.

It has been a hot minute since I've read a book by Sarah Addison Allen. In the past, I've enjoyed her magical stories, and Other Birds did not disappoint! A touch of mystery, a bit of drama and a splash of whimsy make this story worth the wait!

I can't ever decide if I actually like magical realism or not. I know I don't LOVE it. This is Sarah Addison Allen's most recent book and I think this might be my first. It is the story of a group of people living in an apartment house called The Dellawisp, named after the birds that inhabit the courtyard. This is a story of how friendships can occur with the unlikliest people. It is a story of trauma and healing. With a bit of magic.

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen.

If you are a Sarah Addison Allen fan (raises hand) then I'm pleased to announce that she's back baby! With all of her whimsical detail, right down to the name of the town where the story takes place, Mallow Island, a place inhabited by Dellawisps, the local birds that hum around like pixies.

Zoey has returned to Mallow Island after learned of her estranged mother's death, to claim her apartment, and learn what she can about her mother. But there is a strange air about the apartment building, each resident seems to hold close secrets. Zoey may be unlocking way more mysteries than just hers on this quick visit home.

Allen's book always have the sweetest taste, she loves sprinkling warmth and confection throughout her stories, it's so unique and inviting. The different roads that this story led me on sometimes had me a little lost, but otherwise were delightful with each turn.

I’ve waited forever to have a new book by Sarah, & it was worth the wait. Her storytelling is superb. The characters she writes come alive & the magical realism is, by far, my favorite from her. I cannot praise or recommend her books enough. This book was amazing.

A charming magical story of secrets and family. Told in multiple third person POVs, it is easy to follow and captivates the reader. The characters are well developed and unforgettable.

Words are not enough to describe how much I enjoyed this book. It was a welcomed break from my normal mystery/thriller.

I want to thank Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC of this book.

I love magical realism, but ultimately something about this fell a bit flat for me. I had been so excited to read it, but when I finally closed the book, I was left feeling like something fell a bit short.

I am a huge fan of SAA, but I will admit that this book didn’t grab me in the way that I wanted. The characters were all very interesting and would have made the excellent protagonists in their own stories, but they felt too jumbled together and I couldn’t connect with any of them

Other Birds is about finding yourself, chosen family and community. It's about processing grief and the magic along the way that helps you along. I loved the descriptive writing, food, characters and setting of the island. The magical realism and mystery woven into the story is true to the authors style and I loved it all. I found myself looking up the places, the birds and the witch balls-I seriously want one of these beautiful pieces of art.

I tandem read and listened to this on audio which had a wonderful narration.

Thanks to St Martin's Press and NetGalley for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen is available now. For fans of magical realism and romance this is a sweet story that follows Zoey who heads to her deceased mother's house and finds quirky neighbors and encounters some paranormal activity. I have enjoyed this author in the past for the feel good vibes. This book is quite a bit different than what she normally writes but I still thought it was a good story.

I waited for years for Allen's latest book. I discovered her years ago and instantly devoured her books of magical realism as soon as I could.

Other Birds is a sweet book of never really fitting in, but finally finding your place among a found family.

Thank you, NetGalley, for an e-ARC of Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen.
Other Birds is the story of a girl trying to reconnect with her past by visiting the home her mother lived in before her death. A story about life, death, and the choices we make. Told in different points of view, including voices of ghosts that "haunt" the complex. A sweet story that shows the power of friendship.

Other Birds is a magical realism/supernatural story about friendships and second chances. Zoey moves into her late mother's old condo at The Dellawisp in a lovely little island in South Carolina, known for it's marshmallow industry and tourism. She vows to make friends with the other residents, all whom have secrets from the past they carry deep within them. Thrown into the mix are the Dellawisp birds themselves - funny little turquoise birds known for stealing items from the residents

I started this book once, months ago, and ended up putting it down as it didn't grab me and my TBR was calling. That's the lovely and funny thing about books! Sometimes you found the right book at the wrong time. I decided to pick it back up after a friend read it and loved it. I found that I devoured it the second time around. I fell in love with the allure and magical qualities of Mallow Island and The Dellawisp. I LOVED the characters and watching how they grew and changed. I'm so glad I came back to this lovely book, what a treasure. If you love a character heavy read with some magical components subtlety woven in to a sweet story, you also may love this one!

Thank you Netgalley for the chance to read in exchange for my honest review!

This copy was kindly given to me by the publisher and Netgalley for review. All opinions are my own.

I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH. I have missed Sarah Addison Allen's books and this one did not disappoint. If anything, I hate I didn't read it sooner. There is just so much magic to her writing, language and stories. I loved the different POVs throughout this novel and the different take on the ghost that follow the characters. Allen's books are so much fun and always put me in a better mood; it might sound weird but it makes me look at the mundane moments of life as a little more magical.

I can't rave about this book enough.

I absolutely love Sarah Addison Allen and I really enjoy magical realism so I was looking forward to this book and sadly it disappointed me. Each of the SAA books I have read in the past were delicious from the start and ended up being scrumptious and making me want seconds. Honestly, if I had not have read an SAA book before I might have abandoned this one very early on. As you can see, it has taken me some time from reading to writing this review. I hate to be negative and sound whiny but really there were parts of this book that were like eating the best cheesecake but more parts like pouring a glass of milk only to realize it is sour. That is the only way I can describe it. It was a good story but parts of it were too wordy for me and it wasn't as magical as her other books. Don't go by my review. There are many reviews raving and some where people liked this less than I did but...I am still a fan of Sarah Addison Allen and will always read what she writes and I thank her for making magical realism with all the trimmings a genre.

Zoey is ready for a fresh start and that begins the moment she arrives at The Dellawisp, an apartment building on Mallow Island, South Carolina named for the magical little birds that call the building home. Zoey is hoping for a chance to connect with her deceased mother who left the apartment to her, but what she finds is not at all what she expected. The Dellawisp's tenants are quite the characters and there is something truly magical about the place. Can Zoey find what she is looking for with a little bit of magic?

It took me a while to get into this book, but I finished it three days ago and I still keep thinking about it. The idea of what makes a home is what really stuck with me after this book. For each person, the idea of home is completely different. I really liked seeing how each of their stories unfolded. The writing style is not my personal favorite, but the story is definitely one I will take with me.

I loved the imagery of the ghosts and the found family Allen created. While it was certainly predictable, its a good segue away from Nora Roberts or Danielle Steel
