Four college friends (Armann, Gunnlauger, Daniel and Helena) reunite and and decide to go on a hunting trip in Iceland. They are caught in a storm and seek shelter in an abandoned hunting lodge. They make a grim discovery in the lodge and realize it isn't as safe as they hoped. Past secrets and feelings are revealed and they begin to turn against each other. Each member has to decide whether to stay in the lodge or take their chances outside.

The story is told in alternative points of view that reveals their history and current predicament. The descriptions of the weather and atmosphere was so well done. It was a quick read with short chapters so my type of book!

Pick up this Icelandic Noir book if you want a slow, slow burn.
4 childhood friends, Armann, Daniel, Gunnlauger and Helena have assembled for a weekend get together. Via the alternating points of view, we learn their connections, their feelings for each other and the problems that keep them up at night.

The friends are trekking, but the weather doesn't hold and a blinding whiteout causes them to be lost. Before the end of the weekend at least one of the friends will die! Knowing this at the start of the story raised your anxiety and all of the fun. The chapters are short and the changing points of view keep you guessing and engaged as the
ending slowly moved towards you, like an enormous glacier. If you like snow stories, reunions of friends and of course the knowledge all along that something bad will certainly happen, then #Outside is for you! #StMartinsPress #NetGalley

I was really excited to receive an advanced copy of this book as Iโ€™m a big fan of this authorโ€™s previous books.

This book is very atmospheric, and it has a real sense of place. I could genuinely imagine myself in the midst of the snowstorm depicted. I didnโ€™t feel a connection to the characters, however, and I formed no connection to any of them. The ending was a shock to be honest โ€“ but not in a good way.

With that said, there were certainly enjoyable elements to the book, and I do look forward to what this author writes next.

My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martinโ€™s Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This was a good story but everything felt too short. Too quickly clipped, like there was more that should have been told. Both the story and the characters were just underdeveloped.

I was super-excited to read this book, and it being set in Iceland made it unique; but I struggled a bit with this book. While I enjoyed the descriptions of the outside, the snow and cold, and I felt like I was there with the four friends (Armann, Helena, Daniel and Gunnlaugur), trudging through the blizzard trying to find shelter, I didn't feel a connection to the characters. I couldn't engage with them or care much about them.

I, at first was enjoying Daniel's perspective at the start of the book but when it changed to Gunnlaugur's perspective, I felt that I was still reading the story from Daniel's perspective, I didn't feel a difference between the two characters. And Armann and Helena fell a bit flat for me as well.

I will try other books from this author, as I've read other reviewers enjoyed his other books more than this one, I will give Ragnar Jonasson another try.

I am a fan of Ragnar Jonasson, but this novella was not up to what I consider his usual standard. There was an excellent sense of place, but the story was too short to develop any of the characters - I wouldn't have cared if they all froze or met their fate in some other way. . And then I really didn't understand "Dinner for Two" - I couldn't figure out how that fit in with the story. Was it another really short story (it said "title page to come") or am I just not seeing what it obvious? I hope Jonasson goes back to his full length books or starts another series. Thanks for the advance copy of the book, I'm sorry to rate this only two stars.

Four friends find a simple reunion turning deadly in the newest thriller from Ragnar Jonasson. Unfolding on the cold landscape of Iceland and described in the bone-chilling style we've come to expect from Jonasson, this one will keep you reading.

The front half of this book is definitely a bit of a slow burn, but the way that the author describes the setting makes you want to grab a blanket. It draws you in and makes you keep reading. The back half of the book is a really well written spiral of secrets and surprises you won't be able to put down.

This is one will satisfy fans looking for more of Jonasson's writing, and would be a good place to start for readers who are unfamiliar with him.

Another nail biter from Norweigian Ragnar Jonasson. This one is full of twists and turns with a surprising ending. Highly recommend for those who are into Scandinavian authors.

Holy cow, this was a rollercoaster ride of a book. I started out liking a couple characters and disliking a couple, but by the end, I wasnโ€™t sure if I could stand any of them. The plot is basically asking the question of what if four extremely unsympathetic people get lost in a snowstorm and people start disappearing and dying.

Unsympathetic characters aside, this is a very suspenseful novel. One twist was fairly obvious but the main twist was a good one. The ending seemed to be a cliffhanger and left me wanting more. I definitely enjoyed this one.

This was a DNF at 40%. I thought this book had great promise and enjoyed the beginning. By 30% I was losing interest in the characters and the story and by 40% I just didn't care about the outcome.

I'm sure there is an audience for this one but it just wasn't for me.

Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this title.

I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

When four old college friends get together for an outing, to shoot birds, a blizzard traps them in a small, basic, and unheated shelter. When they experience a surprise confrontation, things go from โ€˜bad to worseโ€™ and their time together ends in tragedy.

I have read and enjoyed many of Ragnar Jonassonโ€™s books, but this story was not as appealing as the others. It did, though, expose how events in the past can cause irreparable damage in the future.

This book sounded so good, and I was so excited to read it! But it just didn't quite engage me. Maybe the "and then there were none" trope has just been re-created so much, that a story really needs to be engaging with great characters for it to resonate more. I'm sure others will love this, and Iceland is a great setting, but it wasn't one of my favorites.

Ragnar has written yet another book I LOVED! He is definitely one of my favorite authors, so to me he can do no wrong. I have read every single one of his books and they are all 4-5 star reads for me!

Just like his previous novels, Jonasson created an amazing atmospheric mystery in OUTSIDE, slowly unravelling the truths behind this weekend getaway... and these friends are all hiding something! I really enjoyed the alternating POVs and the Icelandic setting was chilling.

The only reason I'm giving this one a 4 instead of a 5 is because I wanted a little more out of the ending. The end was wrapped up a little quickly and I would have loved at least a few more chapters.

Overall, amazing read and I definitely recommend this one to fans of Nordic Noir or slow-burn, atmospheric mysteries!

I did not get into this book. I have read others by this author I liked quite a bit but not this one. I found the alternating narrators here to be distracting rather than helpful. I would encourage you to try it yourself because I think for some readers it might be absorbing. It was not for me.

I just finished this book by one of my favorite authors. I am going to rate it as 3.5 stars. As another reviewer pointed out, this is more of a novella than a fully fleshed out novel.

The atmosphere in the book is positively claustrophobic. You can feel the intense weather along with the tension building. You are just waiting for the inevitably bad things to happen.
The story slowly changes shape from a friends weekend to something much more sinister.

Overall, I enjoyed it. Maybe it was just the very limited cast of characters and lack of action. It was more of a slow burn. This may be why I am comparing it a bit unfavorably with one of the series novels that I love so much. However, I am still eagerly awaiting the next book. Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my opinion.

As an avid reader of Nordic noir books and a fan of Ragnar Jonassonโ€™s work I found this stand alone well written. The atmosphere was chilling (literally) and there were certain unexpected twists I thoroughly enjoyed.

I only wish there was more! I found myself wanting to turn over more pages to sadly find myself on the last one. Then ending was quick to wrap up and I was waiting for that wow moment.

Overall I enjoyed this novel!

An atmospheric chiller, and Iโ€™m not just talking about the weather. Four friends on a hunting trip in Iceland are trapped in a blizzard and break into a hut to spend the night. They are surprised by what they find in the hut, and by what lurks in each of their souls.

A very unsettling and dark novel about a group of friends trapped in an emergency shelter during an Icelandic snowstorm. Secrets and dark deceptions emerge and keep the novel moving. The characters needed a bit more depth.

I love reading internationally and few locations are as evocative as Iceland, especially for a good scary story or a thriller. The place is so sparsely populated, it provides for haunting isolation and the weather is just an added bonus, because in Iceland itโ€™s safer inside.
When one must go Outside, one must prepare. The weather can change on a dime, turn lethal in a blink of a snowstorm.
And yet, four longtime friends of the no-longer-should-be-friends-but-still-are-out-of-inertia-and-nostalgia variety decide to brave the Icelandic outside anyway for a hunting trip. They set off for a remote location, promptly get snowed-in, and the poop hits the blades. Oh, and thereโ€™s an armed man in the cabin, just kind of sitting there. Oh, and each of the characters has a secret.
Well, of course, they do, otherwise what sort of a thriller would it be. But you know, what kind of thriller it ends up being? An underwhelming one. The one with a fairly thin plot bulked up by constant perspective shifts and minutiae-driven in style.
Itโ€™s likeโ€ฆyou know in cheesy soap-operaesque movies when something dramatic happens and the camera shifts from one face to the next for a reaction. Itโ€™s a really cheap sort of storytelling gimmick. Well, thatโ€™s exactly the style of this novel. All the author does is just pivot the camera from one character to the next and then gives them a few lines about their past and their motivations.
None of the characters are likeable or especially engaging. None of their secrets are that exciting. The writing is quite flat, more than the usually Scandinavian matter-of-factness. Thereโ€™s just nothing much here. Itโ€™s pretty underwhelming, really.
Iโ€™ve heard about the author, but not caring for series as a format, never tried him until now with this standalone and I must sayโ€ฆitโ€™s disappointing. Not a total waste of time, for it is mildly entertaining and an exceptionally quick read for the page count, and it randomly has a short story in the back which I really enjoyed. But not a glowing introduction to the author either. Going by reviews, many other readers share my opinion about the book. The location and the mood were there. The rest left a lot to be desired. Thanks Netgalley.

Four friends venture out on a hunting trip to get away from the city. While the weather is clear when they leave it quickly brings in an unexpected snowstorm. When the friends make it to an emergency shelter they find an unexpected surprise that changes everything.

Meanwhile we see flashbacks that show these friends have a lot of back-history and they aren't really who they seem.

It's going to be a long time before morning! Will everyone make it home?

I felt like this started very slow. There was a lot of jumping from character to character between the two time periods.
