This book definitely gets mixed reviews from Blake Crouch fans, and I can see why. It doesn't explode your brain the way that Dark Matter does and in a lot of ways it's like reading a summer blockbuster action movie.

Honestly, that's what I enjoyed about it. Writing-wise, it's not nearly as good as Dark Matter, but it is a good bit of mindless fun if you just let yourself go along for the ride and if "action movie in book form" sounds like fun to you.

I also give an extra star because despite how low-brow the sci-fi in this book was, it introduced me to some actual scientific concepts that were really interesting, so I appreciate it for that.

Logan is the son of an infamous genealogist who’s experiment to improve agricultural production went horribly wrong. To atone for his familial involvement in an event that made history books, he works as a federal agent for a new agency that prosecutes gene-mutation and disruption related crimes. On a raid he was injected with a mutation that has turned him into a more efficient version of himself — and the injection was not by accident. As he tries to make sense of his new body & mind, he is also left with a large responsibility — should other humans be injected with the same upgrade?

The ending of this book was so good I re-read it three times. Fast-paced, thought provoking and so good! This would make a great movie so hoping we get one soon!

Thank you NetGalley and Ballantine Books for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This was my first sci-fi thriller read and first book by Blake Crouch. I loved the action, suspense, drama, and all the scientific references. Logan was a complex and compelling character. The overall message of this book was impactful. I will definitely read Dark Matter next!

Intense and provoking Upgrade is a perfect blend of science and philosophical reasoning. The pacing is excellent, with great ebb and flow. Highly recommend.

While I didn't love this one as much as I did Dark Matter, Upgrade was still an action and thriller packed sci-fi read for me. I also loved where Crouch went with gene editing and looking at some of the consequences/ domino effect of doing so; reading a thought provoking yet enjoyable novel is sometimes hard to come by.

While I enjoyed the overall plot, some of the plot points/ scenes felt unfinished when the story moved forward. I found the world building to not be as robust as I would have liked and I didn't really connect with our MC all that much. I wasn't a huge fan of how bittersweet the ending was.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this one and think other sci-fi fans will too, especially if they liked Crouch's Dark Matter and Recursion.

I struggled between giving this book a 4-star and a 3-star but ultimately went with the former.

The book is a dystopian novel, and it has a lot of elements that make you stop and think and question humanity and the general future we’re headed in. The book also has some really good/interesting quotes. However, where I struggled with the potential to give it a 3-star were in the fact that I felt a disconnect between the main characters, especially the sister, and her reason for her actions. I can’t really go into more without giving away the plot which I don’t want to do. However, I felt like there was a missing link and a basic understanding of why this character was so passionate about doing what she wanted to do given that she had full knowledge of the potential repercussions. It just felt unreasonable on many levels.

Still a book that makes you think after it’s over, deserves more than a 3-star in my opinion.

3.5 stars rounded up. Logan Ramsey thought he was doing well fighting off the stigma of working with his fanatical activist mother and going on with his life after her death. Now he's finding his mind and body transformed with super-human abilities and everything points to his mother's work. But she's been dead for years. Hasn't she?

Blake Crouch's sci-fi thriller, Upgrade, is an action-packed, enjoyable, quick read. The backdrop of the story is Logan's scientist mother's fanatical climate activism which is never really fleshed out. From snippets, the reader learns that she was a genius scientist whose work failed spectacularly, leading me to question the "genius" credentials. That part of the story just didn't seem well thought out. However, most of the book focuses on Logan using his newly-found enhancements to find who is behind his upgrade and what their plan is for him.

Overall it is an enjoyable read for anyone who loves non-stop action.

I really liked this book. It might be my number one from Blake Crouch! I enjoyed the character development, and the concept was so so interesting. It flirts with the line of what might just be possible in the future if science continues the way its going. Our main character, Logan, gets an upgrade. It makes him feel a little different, though nothing crazy or super noticeable at first. As the days go on, he starts to feel new abilities and changes developing, which brings on new problems of it's own.

I thought this book was well done, and it kept me guessing throughout the whole thing!

Anything by Blake Crouch is a gem and Upgrade is no different. It was a bit more science-y (?) than Dark Matter, but I loved it nonetheless. I'm not sure how he does it but he makes a fictional story that is heavy on the science so great. He's a definite must-read for me after 3 greats (Dark Matter, Recursion, Upgrade).

I really enjoyed Upgrade by Blake Crouch. Logan Ramsey has been “upgraded.” His genes are now that of a super homo-sapient making his intellect, recall, memory much more superior than it was. His sister, Kara has also been upgraded. But is this good or bad? That’s the conflict on this story.

I was fascinated by this premise. You can’t do nothing. You have to choose. Humanity can’t be saved by killing humanity. All great thoughts that Blake Crouch presents in a very entertaining story.

I was fortunate enough to receive a free ARC to read and review this book, but unfortunately, I couldn't get into the medical and scientific jargon. I knew this book had potential so I didn't want to not review it. I waited until the audiobook was available and boy am I glad! This story was intriguing and I didn't want to pause it for real life.

I'm not much of a fan of scifi stories like the future or dystopian type novels, but this story didn't feel very scifi-ish. It actually felt very near near future and like something that could happen.

I would love to have more Logan Ramsey as he takes on the genetic problems in the world. I know this is a singular story and it wraps up nicely, but it'd be nice for him to tackle another problem. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Michael Crighton. This story gave me Andromed Strain feels; very entertaining and thought provoking.

I really enjoyed this book by Blake Crouch. It had a great mix between plot and character building. As a main character, Logan was complex and multi-faceted especially in the face of difficult decisions. This is a must read for science fiction and adventure fans.

Blake Crouch did it again, love his books so much and this one did not disappoint even though it took a while for me to get to it.

I swear his books are just the best. I do not read Sci Fi. I leave that to my partner. Every single time I read a Blake Crouch book, I think I must be missing out on this genre.

Superb writing. Fantastic story. Just 100% well done. No spoilers here but I will say a gene war sounds intriguing and scary.

Also as always audio is wonderful. Thank you to Penguin Random House for the audio arc.

5 huge stars for me.

Blake crouch had impressed again! This one jumped right into the action and I loved the whole premise. It was mind bending and twisty, yet I could totally see this happening someday.

A highly entertaining blend of science fiction and suspense. Logan was very engaging protagonist, following him through all the twists and turns he had to deal with was fascinating ride through a near future world were technology could be our savior or our downfall. A thoroughly thought provoking read.

I was engaged with this book from the very beginning! I immediately began thinking of who I knew who would enjoy such an amazing scientific thriller. While the science bit of it was overwhelming, it was not randomly thrown in like I normally find in science heavy novels, but transitioned well.
Logan's journey through his upgrade was captivating.

I read this right after Recursion, which was really interesting, and so, perhaps, this book suffers a bit due to comparison. I just couldn't get into it and it took me a long time to finish. That being said, the idea was creative.

I think I like the idea of Blake Crouch more than I like the work of Blake Crouch. I've read of few of his books and I think they're all well and fine. I see the appeal but they never quite do it for me. they never bring it all the way home. The ideas are great but they start to flatter on the page a bit, for me at least. I'll keep reading them, though, because they are fun enough. and I'm pretty easy when it comes to keeping me entertained.

This book was good not as great as his other books, but I still enjoyed it. The beginning started it off a little slow but wants to store got started. It never really slow down and I really enjoyed that.
