A lovely atmospheric story that has you going through life with young Una Kelly and fighting her corner when she faces enemies she never saw coming 5*

A richly-detailed and compelling historical saga. Characters are very well written, and I raced through this book. Gripping from the start.

Definitely a book worth reading - looking forward to more of Amanda’s novels. Una does not have the best start in life trying to survive living amongst thieves. She witnesses a murder, but is accused of committing it. Eventually she enters nursing where she hopes to hide realising that life can change. I loved the plot and got caught up in it.

Una has been brought up on the streets and been taken in by someone who deals with stolen goods! She has been taught at a very young age with how to pick pocket, she is very good at it and makes a living from it even with her boss taken the vast amount of money she makes from it.

Then Una with her friend Deidra witness a murder, which is then blamed on Una she is on the run and needs somewhere to lay low until the police stop looking for her. Una comes across Bellevue Hospital who is excepting nurses for training, which in Una's mind is an ideal place to lay low and not be caught, then some people start to mysteriously dye with no reason why.

Una must find the murderer and also clear her name in end.

This is a great story with a good mix of characters.

The Nurse's Secret by Amanda Skenandore

Based on Florence Nightingale’s nursing principles, Bellevue is the first school of its kind in the country. Where once nurses were assumed to be ignorant and unskilled, Bellevue prizes discipline, intellect, and moral character, and only young women of good breeding need apply. At first, Una balks at her prim classmates and the doctors’ endless commands. Yet life on the streets has prepared her for the horrors of injury and disease found on the wards, and she slowly gains friendship and self-respect.
I really enjoyed this book , it was so much more than your usual historical saga . It was part thriller , part mystery as well.
Great storyline and I really enjoyed the character of In a and her fight to better herself from humble beginnings.
I hope we get to read more and the author will continue her story into the life of Una.

The cover of The Nurses Secret says that lovers of Dilly Court would enjoy this book... it's true I for one did.

When Una, a pick pocket, is accused of murder she escapes and finds herself joining a nurses training program to hide from the police. Sadly more murders occur within the hospital, but who is the culprit and is Una safe?

This is a well researched historical novel that not only covers American history of the slums and the poorest in society, but also medical beliefs and procedures including the earliest nurse training. So as well as enjoyable I also found myself learning a lot too!!!

The story is well paced, keeping me on the edge of my seat throughout. It was impossible to guess the outcome so was kind of a surprise when the truth is revealed in dramatic fashion. The characters were all well presented and likeable in the most part.

I would love to see a sequel, What will Una do next?
