Thank you to NetGalley for the complimentary copy of The Ferryman's Toll by Daniel James.

I was interested in reading this book, but I have to admit that it felt like hard work. I can't say I could follow the story very well, and could not give an accurate brief of the book. It had so much promise and I'm sorry I couldn't get into it.

I always knew that this was going to be a challenge for me to read. First of all this genre is no way near my usual choice of reading, secondly I had not read the first in the series.
There comes a time when a seasoned reader has to grab different genres and see what they are about, and try to get into them.

The book is exceptionally well written, and at times the reader can forget that they are reading a modern fantasy even beyond the Marvel type of books. There are at least two stories running side by side here.
The main characters are the souls of dead people who have been recruited by the good guys to kill the bad guys, and they have a fairly normal modern life enjoying their off-duty hours.

When on duty however they meet everyone's worst nightmares and are probably stuff of nightmare themselves. The battles are horrendously brutal but fortunately the good guys win, for now.

Overall I enjoyed the book, and if this is your bag, grab this book and devour it.

My thanks to the publisher for an advanced copy for honest review.

Although I liked the idea of Marvel type characters against supervillain's from the description, I struggled to get into this book. I liked the idea of the different super character's, their abilities and the world building but something was missing for me.

This was the second in an urban fantasy series. I did not read the first and did feel it hurt my enjoyment of this book. I could follow what was going on but I had a hard time getting into it.

This was an action-packed book. There wasn’t much time to catch your breath. However, there was still depth to the characters.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

A super hero versus super villlans sort of, not quite hit the mark for me, but not a bad book. Well written.
I received this book from the publishers via Netgalley for a review.

Picking up straight after book 1, this was a fast paced and entertaining urban fantasy romp. Great characters and great world building.

This book has all the hallmarks of a modern fantasy Marvel type hero book. The main character, a comic book illustrator, has discovered he has as described in the book low level necromancer skills, and is supported throughout by kick-ass heroes with their own skills. He has found himself in an Agency that is fighting evil. The story is a search into how villains have been developing super-villain powers and battling to destroy them. The book drops you straight into a major battle between these two groups. I was excited to read the book from its description. But ultimately I was left disappointed. I haven’t read the first book and it took me until chapter four to have some real incite into what was going on, and throughout I never felt I really had a grip on the main character. Secondly, some of the filler between the battles for me dragged and didn’t add to the exciting action. So for me personally this one is a miss, but there are many differing views so why don’t pick up the book and make your own mind up. Thanks to NetGalley for sending me an ARC. The views expressed are all mine freely given.

Excellent and highly entertaining urban fantasy.
It's the second in a series and I think it would be better to read the book in order. I didn't do it and struggled a bit at the beginning even if I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Excellent world building and character development. good storytelling.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

This is not a bad book by any means, but it was certainly different to what I was expecting. Took me a while to get into it and then quite enjoyed it. Recommended.

Hard to get into this book and maybe had a read the prequel that would have made things clearer.

I generally like the SF/Fantasy genre but this perhaps bordered this and I didn't feel that the storyline flowed too well until part way into the book.

The story at times suddenly leapt to different perspectives which added to the puzzlement of what was happening.

Not convinced that I'd want to read the first of these nor subsequent stories based on this.

This book is well written with characters that are interesting, relatable and really well developed. A gripping storyline that I whizzed through and excellent world building. I really liked it.

For those who have read Hourglass, this book picks up pretty much straight away from that. It is a perfect continuation, seamless in fact.

For those who have not read the first one, I would say do so, as it is a great way to see the characters set up, along with the world. But. But you do not need too, as all the characters are reintroduced nicely, as well as the world and the "badies" in the book.

The world that the author is creating is wonderful, the characters are realistic, the story straight forward with some nice twists here and there.

If you are a fan of urban fantasy then this series is a must!

I read this book trying to expand my range of reading and although it turns out to be a sort of genre that perhaps is not for me, it was an interesting read. It does not make sense unless you have read the previous book so start there. This is the second in a series. The writer creates an interesting world but the military angle was not for me.

When I read the synopsis for The Ferryman's Toll, I was really interested to read the book. I commend the writer of that synopsis but, with hindsight, I wish I had not seen it.

The book did my head in! I struggled and struggled to get into the story but it reads like a book translated by an extremely bad translator.
