Girl On the Run by Carolyn Arnold is the latest in the Detective Madison Knight series. I have enjoyed this series very much and Girl on the Run does not disappoint. The book opens with a young woman running away in desperation. She thinks just maybe she has made her escape and then she sees a big man watching her, knowing if he catches her, she will have a dark future.
Detective Madison Knight was waiting in line for her morning coffee and heard a woman scream, "He has a gun!" She pulls her badge out to try and calm the people around the coffee shop as she prepares to help. People are running from Liberty Station, so she calls dispatch. They have officers on the way and warn her there has been a shooting with casualties at the Just Beans kiosk. Madison arrives to find two women dead and another one groaning. There are two witnesses who tell Madison about a girl with a backpack who took a bottled drink from the cooler without paying. When the women in the line tried to alert others about the theft, a strange man approached them and after heated words were exchanged, he began shooting. The girl ran away and later the man left and was lost in the crowded area.
Madison delivers the notification of death to the families and has questions after she leaves both homes. The husband of the first woman says she couldn't have been pregnant because he had a vasectomy years ago, which makes her wonder if the shootings were random. After speaking with the husband of the second woman Madison sees a picture from her wedding day and feels shocked! The woman in the picture looks just like her friend who went missing years ago. Was the shooting connected to her friend and the reason she left home? As the investigation progresses and more murders occur, Madison wants to find if there is a link to the girl with the backpack who ran away from the coffee kiosk, and her friend who went missing years earlier that was shot.

The prologue in Girl on the Run by Carolyn Arnold is strong and impactful and sets a suspenseful tone that escalates as the novel progresses. This is the eleventh book in the Detective Madison Knight mystery, crime thriller, and police procedural series. Madison is waiting in line to buy coffee when she hears screams that someone has a gun. She rushes to the local train station to find two dead women and one shot, but still alive. There are no obvious signs of the gunman, but everyone seems to be talking about the young woman who was stealing from the coffee shop. Was this a random shooter or was one of the women targeted? Madison and her partner Detective Terry Grant are determined to solve the case.

The main character is not as likeable as many protagonists, but her faults make her feel more realistic than the perfect strong female lead. Driven to solve crimes and seek justice, Madison often goes on instinct, which doesn’t always mean she keeps an open mind. She can be too quick with accusations and has a hard time concealing her feelings. However, she shows some significant character growth during the book. Terry is even-keeled, open minded, and puts up with a lot from Madison. He balances her and their partnership seems to work well. While there are several characters in the book, each is crisply fleshed out making them easy to remember.

The book has a good mix of suspense and police investigation and has an unexpected and action-filled ending. Readers are quickly pulled into the story line with a writing style that grabs and holds one’s attention. The deeply involved plot is twisty, absorbing, and has several tangential investigations that keep Madison and Terry working long hours. There are several potential suspects and enough questions to keep the reader turning the pages. Will you guess who the killer is and why they did it? Several themes run through the story line including murder, friendship, a bit of romance, grief, grudges, and much more.

Overall, this was an enthralling story that held me captivated from the first page to its shocking conclusion. The author did a great job of building suspense throughout the story and weaving the threads together. I look forward to seeing what is next for Madison and Terry. Readers of mysteries and police procedurals will likely enjoy this series. By reading the series in order, the character growth and the relationships that develop over time are more obvious. However, this novel can be read as a stand-alone.

Girl On the Run, book 11 in the Detective Madison Knight Series, is a gripping crime thriller. When Madison is assigned a fatal shooting at a local trains station, she is convinced that one is a missing girl from her passed. What Detective Knight will uncover in her investigation is a drug-trafficking ring with links to the Russian Mafia. This tough detective will find that justice can be very costly. I love this series. The storylines are always great, and the characters are well-written in this suspenseful thriller.

11th book in the Detective Madison Knight series.
Madison is waiting for coffee when a shooting occurs at nearby Liberty Station - rushed there to find two women dead and another injured at a coffee kiosk.
Maddie and her partner Terry investigates the murders and possible drug operation tied to the Russian mob and police corruption.
Complicated storyline with ties to previous books which slowed the book down considerably.
I was a bit frustrated with Maddie as a character - as she barged into situations sometimes without a thought for her colleagues or the general public.
Book speeded up towards the end and finished on a high.

This is book 11 in the Madison Knight series but easily stands alone. It's another very good read from the author, filled with action and suspense. The plot is interesting and complex, a Monday morning commute turns to terror after a shooting in a train station. The pace slows a little in the middle but the unexpected ending left me satisfied. I would recommend this very solid read from the author. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

Detective Madison Knight is called to a murder scene where 2 woman have been shot by a subway coffee stall. When notifying the next of kin, Madison notices the likeness to one victim to her old childhood best friend who disappeared without a trace. Is this really Courtney and what really happened all those years ago.
Another enjoyable read by Carolyn Arnold. I liked the sub plots and can rep be read without having read the rest of the series.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.

This is my third read by this author and all the books I’ve read by her have been from different series. Whilst this is I think book 11 in the Madison Knight series it can be read on it’s own. There are references to events from previous books and they don’t take anything away from this book or the plot line and I thought this was a very enjoyable and good read. It started off really well and grabbed my attention right from the start and held it all the way through. The main character is likeable, believable and realistically portrayed. She and her partner investigate a missing girl and two murders, and Madison thinks she knows one of the victims from her past. I liked the many separate story threads that kept me guessing. This is a well written book with a good plot line and plenty of twists to keep me engaged in the story. I enjoyed the small glimpses the author gave into Madison’s home and personal life. Overall a very good and absorbing read and I will definitely look to reading the authors other books and catching up with the characters in each individual series when I can. I would recommend this if you like crime, police procedurals.

One of the things that I like about this series is the continued growth of Madison Knight as a character. Rather than become a one-dimensional vigilante focused on fighting the Russian mob, she is a whole person with flaws and strengths. In the latest from Carolyn Arnold, Madison catches a murder case with a victim that looks like a friend who went missing 20 years ago and must convince her partner to chase the leads where they point. Meanwhile, she's grappling with the aftereffects of the car accident in the previous book. Highly enjoyable read.

Thanks to Hibbert & Stiles Publishing for access to a digital ARC on NetGalley.

Girl on the Run by Carolyn Arnold

Detective Madison Knight shows up at the local train station in the aftermath of a fatal shooting, and finds two women killed on scene. One was expecting her first child. The other was a wife and mother of two children and has Madison seeing a ghost from her past. She’s convinced the woman is her missing college friend, but why would she change her identity? And where has she been all this time?

"Girl on the Run" by Carolyn Arnold, will be published April 6th. This is the 11th book in "A Detective Madison Knight Mystery" series.

Detective Madison (Maddy) Knight and her partner Troy Matthews are called to the scene of a shooting at the Liberty Station. Two women are dead and a 3rd is injured. As Maddy persues the case, she realizes she may know one of the dead women. Approximately 15-years earlier Maddy's friend Courtney Middleton vanished from college. Maddy feels the murder victim may be Courtney. This possibility opens up many unanswered questions. Is this really Courtney? Where has Courtney been? What is her connection to the shooting?

Carolyn Arnold is a highly respected author. I have read several of her books and enjoy her writing style. This is my first in the Madison Knight series and it is a wonderful standalone. The book grabs readers attention from the first chapter. It slows down a bit in the middle, but finishes with a great plot twist. This is not my favorite book of Carolyn's, but it is a good solid mystery.

Thank you NetGalley and Hibbert & Stiles Publishing Inc. for allowing me to review this e-book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Can you let the past go? Det Madison Knight has just arrived at a crime scene and it is a mess. The victims are all women and the shooter has already gotten away. She knows that she can’t just rush to conclusions but once she speaks to the staff at the coffee place she knows that this is mob related. Her partner Det Terry Grant has told her to focus on the facts but he knows that he is talking to a wall as Madison has a big problem with the mob.
The more they look into the events that caused the shooting the more it looks like drugs trafficking but where is the young blond girl that was there when it all happened? Madison knows that she needs to keep focused but one of the murdered woman is someone from her past but she can’t understand why she was killed now. As she went missing years before and Madison always thought that she has been killed.
Things are heating up in the case but it looks like someone else had a reason to want the women dead but who had enough reason to do it?
Will Madison & Terry be able to uncover the truth about what really happened? Will she be able to put the past behind her now? A good read I was lucky enough to receive a copy from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
