This book had me hooked from the first page! I read all 450+ pages in two days because I just could not put it down.

A remarkable historical novel that shows the painful reality of the families forced to leave Germany in order to survive, along with their scientists/breadwinners. A painful yet important topic we don’t read enough about!

A good read for an afternoon escape, a weekend at the beach, a long plain ride etc. It will take you away and won't disappoint. But also not the easiest of subjects although heartwarming in the end.

I thought I had read the book before as it has the same title as a recently published book but Im so glad I started. It's a very different dual or rather triple storyline - two strong women who but for being on opposite sides in the war, could have been friends. It explores just how far one can/will go to protect your family. I enjoyed the development of both characters but did find the constant back and forward between not only characters but timelines very confusing. I loved the depiction of the 1930's in both countries, the contrast and the similarities for those who lived through these times in Germany and the USA.

I would recommend it to those interested in the WW2 time period but would have preferred if the storylines had run a little more smoothly rather than jerking us back in time to the 30's or the 40's before landing back in the 50's.

Oh my heart...this book is so very good. It is hard, it is gut wrenching, it is beautiful and it shows the perserverance and hope of so many people during the war. Kelly Rimmer knows how to write a historical fiction better than most and this one does not disappoint. Highly highly recommend. There's a reason Kelly Rimmer is so many people favorite authors, including mine!
Thank you to net galley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.

In 1930, Jurgen and his wife Sofie are in Germany, joyful about Jurgen's successful career with the new rocket program, but worried about the rise of Hitler and his polarizing views. Their conflict of beliefs becomes very real and clear as they struggle with how to move forward while maintaining appearances.
In 1950, Sofie and two children have joined Jurgen in Huntsville, Alabama, where Jurgen has been working for the past year in America's space program. The move to Huntsville appears to be a breath of fresh air, until rumors swirl and they find that they are greeted with more hate than open arms. The family finds themselves the topic of many rumors and the target of vandalism and violence.
This story is raw, real, and sometimes uncomfortable, but an overall powerful story of WW2 that is inspired by Operation Paperclip which is an interesting point of history to learn more about.

Kelly Rimmer had done it again! She continues to be one of my favorite historical fiction writers! I really enjoyed the dual time line and the story being told from two perspectives. Wonderful! We'll be selecting for our summer bookclub and including this in our subscription Boxes! Also, gorgeous cover!
