A fun introduction to the world of Rebel Girls!

This board book brings to life a myriad of Rebel Women that changed the lives of girls, women, and the world. The quick bios make this book easy to read. As children get older you can use this book as a stepping stone to research more about each woman and their achievements.

Well, I never would have thought that there will be people wanting non fiction books about successful women for babies, but I guess there are. Now as a nonparent but an older sibling I don't think my baby sibling would have liked to read this, or paid attention maybe because he is way too young, but I have an older one who wouldn't care much about this either. Though I'd say it's a cute idea and the illustrations are cute. It doesn't have a lot of words which is nice. I don't know how thick and how the paper feels though as I only have an ebook but I hope at least it feels good and is sustainable because babies love to tear and ruin books. If you're a parent who would love to teach your baby about successful people and motivate them even though they have no idea what they're hearing, then do buy this...

We love Rebel Girls books is our house and I am so excited that there is a board book version. My oldest likes to read them, and my youngest likes to be a part of it, but can be a bit rougher turning the pages, so it’s great this format will be available. The images are bright and easy to follow. The stories are short and sweet, and provide a great introduction to Rebel Girls.
Thank you Net Galley and Rebel Girls for the advance digital copy! We will definitely be adding this to our shelves.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is an amazing, concise way of talking about a bunch of successful women and what they are known for. It's a great stepping stone to the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls biographical books.

I don't usually read books targeted at an audience younger than middle grade, but I've enjoyed quite a few books by Rebel Girls and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to read another one.

This one, specifically, is a board book that talks about important women in an easy-to-understand way. The pictures were pleasing, and overall, I could see a child getting a lot out of this book. This is another book I wish younger me had available because it's so important and inspiring!

This volume is a highlight of stories that feature famous and amazing women and their roles in history. They are not just inspiring, they are living proof that when we close our eyes we only have to trust ourselves to be one day on these pages. If your heart races reading these pages then you are a rebel girl on your path to adventure: That's what this book made me feel. That I can do it.
Also, I love how these books feature different styles of art and artists.

Inspirational book for little ones to hear the accomplishments of many strong, courageous and talented women. We have the full version of this series & love that it was adapted for a younger audience.

Whilst I think this is a great idea for a book, I didn't feel the execution of it was very good. Board books for babies need to have something that will entertain them...I thought it would be written in rhyme, because the pattern and cadence of language is important for baby books. Or I thought it would be an interwoven story, simple of course, but bringing together some inspirational women to an interesting tale. Instead, it is a non-fiction baby board book, and I felt it fell flat because each figure has to be reduced to a sentence, obviously, and so you don't get a story about any of them. There is real skill in creating a good board book. In reading this I thought back to the many, many stories I have sat and read my children on repeat in those early days, and the board books that we read until their binding was almost gone. They had snappy text. They were rhyming. They were funny. They contained surprises.

The illustrations in the book are great - lively and bright and beautiful, and the figures chosen are interesting and diverse. But as a parent, I know however much I love the idea of this book, it wouldn't be one I would sit and read over and over.

I'm sure it will do well, and perhaps it is enough just that lots of babies are seeing a book full of women, but I was disappointed.

My Thoughts:
I know this is a board book on a middle school/YA blog, but I also have never had girls in my family until my son and his wife had our first granddaughter 18 months ago. There are 3 sons and 3 grandsons that came before her. Suddenly, the responsibility has shifted so I have been reading more female empowering books, including this one.

But it fits in this blog because of its potential to be used in the middle school classroom. When I taught 8th grade, we would have a partnership with the primary grade teachers (K-2) for our 7th and 8th graders to come and do read alouds. We could work with our students on prosody in reading to engage and the primary students would have a big brother or big sister in the school. By 8th grade, though, it was also about creating these stories, or more accurately, taking their historical research in 8th grade social studies and their research in the genre of children's literature in English and starting to write their own stories.

This is a great model text for that activity. The implications for student learning using this book as an example has to do with doing enough reading nationally and internationally to choose the small amount of women for a picture book. In short:

Who should be chosen?
Who should get a 2-page spread versus one page? Why?
What is the balance between America and the international?
What different kind of impact will be chosen?
How do you define a "rebel girl"?
How do you describe the individual contribution in one sentence that will give enough information to entice readers to do more reading?
How do you choose colors or picture style to appeal to non readers?
There's more, but seeing this book as potential for curriculum is the first step.

A nice book for very young readers, full of sketches of inspirational women. Good to see the Rebel Girls series reaching out to readers of all ages.

This was a beautifully illustrated introductory book of this series for babies. The short sentences were on point allowing for more exploration as its targeted audiences ages.
This book highlighted extraordinary women from past and present such as Ruth Badger Ginsburg, Mae Jamison, Cleopatra, Rosa Parks and a few others.
This would make a great gift for any child’s first library.

Twenty-two notable women are celebrated using one or two sentences and one full color graphic portrait in this board book that seems better suited to preschoolers rather than babies. For the spread on Joan Jett, the text says β€œWhen Joan Jett strummed her guitar, she played loud and fast. β€˜I love rock and roll,’ she shouted to the crowds. And they shouted back!” The women represented a vast time period and a global perspective, from Cleopatra to gymnast Simone Biles, and the next to final spread includes five more women. Libraries may want to stick with the original collective biography, Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Tales of Extraordinary Women, (Timbuku, 2016); this adaptation might be better as a gift book.

A Rebel Girl's book geared toward the littlest of girls. Very quick one sentence blurbs on women who succeeded in many different fields. Not sure how much babies will take from this, but the colors are bright and vibrant, and you have to start somewhere.

In just 16 pages, 20 women are highlighted with a brief sentence or two about their accomplishments. This is done in a way that is easy for little ones to understand, with bright, colorful pictures that they will certainly remember.

If I know of someone having a baby girl, I would absolutely get them this book (heck, I think it's great for parents of boys as well). However, it definitely speaks to young girls and gives them the message that they can be anything they want to be, do anything they want to do and not to be afraid to stand up for what's right. In a world where women are often not recognized as much as men, it is important for girls to grow up knowing that they can do anything. This book showcases powerful women, and that's something that should be promoted.

Lovely reading about the star women of the world. The illustrations made the little things colourful and enjoyable. A great way to learn and teach our girls and boys about some great women in history.

A fantastic introduction for the youngest of Rebel Girls - Baby’s!

Raising young girls into strong women is one thing, and it’s all about the foundations set for them - and this is one of those foundations!

The vibrant imager will be enjoyed by even the youngest of readers, and short sentence structure will support the early stages of learning to read… nothing better than starting young children with reading about Amelia Earhart & Harriet Tubman!

The language used in this book is visibly simplified in comparison to other, older Rebel Girl offerings, again making it ideal for its target audience.

The use of onomatopoeia and alliteration gives the book that poetic tone which is very inviting for younger readers (and older!) making it a soft lullaby of strong, feminist leaders - nothing better to go to sleep too!

Lastly, as always the diversity and equality within the Rebel Girls series is displayed perfectly in this book showing that any and every girl, can be a rebel girl.
