I enjoyed the scene setting in this book, and really felt I was spending time in Lisbon itself. The characters were well written, and I really got into the plight of the pratagonist. The storyline became a little further and further from 'realistic', but I remained invested! Great author

A lot longer than expected I found myself filling in and out of the book which ruined the experience some what. The jumps in time were a bit jarring. So much potential but sadly let down by the reading experience.

This book dragged for so long and not even the twists could save it. Also being Portuguese and from Lisbon, i found the all setting very Americanized and label us a bit as dumb from the start with hotel staff that don't understand English at least the basic??? when she is in a 5* or so what hotel? like no no no the whole plot was just meh and a bit over the top

Unfortunately I had to give up on this one 😬 I just couldn’t get into it at all. The storyline jumped from past to present so quickly without much distinction so I couldn’t work out whether it was present or past !

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. It was quite a long book and there was a lot going on! It was a good premise and well written. The setting in Lisbon was also very good as was the character development. Overall it was quite a good read!

I hadn't read a thriller in ages, but based on glowing reviews I thought I'd give this one a go. It is a fine thriller indeed, well built-up with reveals up to the very end. A bit too long maybe and a bit trying too hard to impress with how the rich live... It would make a good TV series and in fact I should have waited for that, because in the end this book confirmed that I just don't see the point anymore of using my limited reading time for thrillers...

Superb in the way the plot keeps challenging your perceptions. A world that is not black or white. A crime that is not black or white. Every time you think you've gotten to the truth, the goalpost changes... which makes this book difficult to put down. The Lisbon setting is perfect!

I was unable to read this, due to a technical issue, which I reported at the time, but which has never been resolved.............................

This was everything you need for a thriller and crime story. It is not as black and white as you first think and like most typical thrillers, is full of twists. This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.

It took a while to get started on this book, because it is quite long. After the first chapter, I was gripped. Ariel's husband John disappears while they are on a business trip to Lisbon, and Ariel goes to the authorities to try and find him. the Portuguese police, the American embassy and the CIA all get involved in the search. Ariel is a great character, cynical and suspicious. The CIA and police characters are also good, all individuals, with private lives and humour between them. The them of the book is about the difference between facts and the truth. Things are revealed about Ariel and John as the book goes on, and, as the reader, it is hard to know who to believe. It's great!

A woman wakes up in a Lisbon hotel room to find her new husband is missing. A ransom call follows and quickly she realizes neither the police nor the American embassy is going to be much help to her and she's racing against the clock to get her husband back.

I am conflicted on this one. This book started really strongly but then went off in all sorts of convoluted directions. There were almost too many strands to the story. The main premise was a strong one but I lost interest as the book went on and struggled to finish this one. I did see it through and the ending was satisfactory and made the book worth reading but I don't think I can recommend this one. Also , the main character is a woman in her forties and she just wasn't written authentically , some of the things she said and some of the decisions she made made zero sense to me ( a woman in my forties). Some of the references and writing on sexual assault and violence against women were clunky and lacked understanding.

Flashes of a good book in there. Strong start and end but a messy and too long middle.

I enjoyed the authors previous novels but found this story convoluted and confusing. However, I liked the Lisbon setting and will read more by the author.

This book starts with Ariel's husband going missing one night, while the couple are in Lisbon for a busness trip, and follows Ariel as she tries desperately to find out the truth of what happened to him, while coming up against a sceptical police force and often unhelpful embasy staff. The story is full of twists and turns and keeps you guessing. The pace remains high pretty much throughout the entire story and never gets boring.

I was impressed at the author's (a man) abillity to write through the eyes of the main character (a woman). Thought he touched on some really serious subjects with intelligence and empathy, for instance, being an attractive woman and having to deal with often unwanted attention from a certain type of man, and how she dealt with that over time.

I'd heard a lot about this book and it definitely lived up to the hype in my view.

It was the first book I read by this author and my expectations were quite high as I read excellent reviews.
This book is well written, the setting fascinating, but it didn't work for me as I couldn't care for Ariel.
Not my cup of tea
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

I previously read Chris Pavone's 'The Paris Diversion' (but didn't really get it), so I thought I would try again when I saw this new one. Others have given it rave review but ....... I just can't get into this style of writing at all. As with the last book the plot twists and turns, but I felt absolutely no connection with the characters and found myself flicking forward several pages at a time just to get through it.

It's written in the present tense, which gives the plot an immediacy and sense of propelling forwards, but there's this really annoying narrative voice which comes out with sentences such as: 'The absence of clues is, itself, a clue.' After the first ten pages I was irritated, and it didn't get any better.

And then there's this clock-ticking thing, like the TV series '24'. So you get 'Day 1, 7.53am', or 'Day 2, 3.28pm'. Why not just say 7.55am, or 3.30pm? Sometimes it did, but this inane pseudo-exactitude irked me also..

Sorry to say, I shall avoid his books in future. Clearly he is much-liked by others, but this is just not my style, I'm afraid. I can only struggle to 2 stars.

Update: sorry, on thinking about it, 1 star is the best I can do. Pretty dreadful.

(With thanks to the publisher and NetrGalley for an ARC of this title.)

After a stint in Paris in 2019’s The Paris Diversion Chris Pavone packs us off to a more laid-back country in the Mediterranean. As the name indicates Two nights in Lisbon, much like The Paris Diversion, takes place over a short time frame in the Portuguese capital. Despite its time limitation the generous measure of intrigue, subterfuge and deep-dive into the main character's background ensure that, unlike brief two-night weekend getaways, you won't be left unsatisfied afterwards.

A mystery thriller, when Ariel wakes up in Lisbon on her honeymoon, to discover her new husband has disappeared. She then sets out to find out what has happened. Ariel is not a character I could relate to, or empathise with, she is too irritating.
It was an ok read, but not memorable. The writing style was not my favourite. In some chapters we had two sentences so long and full of description, that it runs to almost a page.
A 3 star read.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my advance copy of this book.

This book is the best that I've read all this year. It is astonishing to find a mystery book that has a great star, a gripping middle and an amazing conclusion. In my experience as a reader it is very unusual to read a book that is so good in all three departments. I was very gripped reading this authors first book "The Expats" but I consider this one is even better.

Ariel Pryce wakes up in Lisbon, alone. Her husband is gone – no warning, no note, not answering his phone. Something is wrong.

She starts with hotel security, then the police, then the US embassy, at each confronting questions she can't fully answer: What exactly is John doing in Lisbon? Why would he drag her along on his business trip? Who would want to harm him? And why does Ariel know so little about her new husband?

The clock is ticking. Ariel is running out of time. But the one person in the world who can help her is the one person she doesn't want to ask...

A complex, intelligent, multi-layered thriller, Two Nights in Lisbon is filled with twists, turns, husbands, wives, secrets and lies – and it will linger long after you turn the surprising final page.

Buy this book as you won't find a better one that has been so extensively researched and dramatically written this year. I look forward to reading the authors next book. Most strongly recommended..

Wow, really enjoyed this read!

I was lucky enough to receive a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest feedback ❤️

Ariel heads to Lisbon to accompany her husband on his business trip. When she awakes from their first night there, her husband is missing! They have only been married a year, does Ariel really know her husband?

The writing of this story keeps you reading, as we dig deeper into her husband’s whereabouts we also dig deeper into her past as the story progresses. I couldn’t predict where the story was going but I enjoyed the ending, everything was tied up nicely! Was an intriguing read!

A little too many flashbacks for me, making the story quite lengthy but still enjoyable.

well written with a compelling storyline and well developed characters. The pacing of the book increased as the tension in the story increased. and this was done perfectly. Twisty, unpredictable and nail biting. I loved it.
