This book was a breath of fresh air. It reminded me of the way I felt when I read The Summer I Turned Pretty and is a more mature version of those books. I really loved the main character, Percy, and the slow burn between her and Sam was so well done. I also loved that this book was set in different locations in Ontario (my home!!). When I recognize the setting/locations in a book I find myself connecting to the story more. I think Carley Fortune did a great job of weaving a story about love, loss, and growing up. This should definitely be on your summer TBR list!

This book was a bit hard to get into for me, but once I did, it was an entire roller coaster of emotions. Carley Fortune writes beautifully, and this book reflects that. I cannot wait for any other books she puts out.

Where to start with this. This book actually ended up being so much more than I was at first expecting. I kind of picked it up on a whim if, why not, because I’ve been in the mood for this kind of genre of books recently and thought I might as well give someone new a shot when it popped up in my emails.

This book exceeded my expectations and I’m so happy I went for it. It had me tense, it had me sad for characters and what they had lost between them, it had me happy for that newfound friendship and that first taste of love and the growing pains that come with one’s first love.

There were moments in this book that I was so frustrated with the characters and where in the story I was at just because I wanted to know NOW what was going to happen between them and how things originally all fell apart.

I should add that this book has one of my absolute favourite storytelling layouts in that it went back and forth between the present and the past, to show exactly how what seemed like a pure love ended in these two characters being apart for over a decade. I love this kind of story so much. Even if at times it had me frustrated wanting to skip ahead to the important bits that revealed what had happened and if they would be able to fix things so far past when their relationship fell apart.

I initially thought I would be more bored by the past storyline about the MC’s as kids because I wanted to get to the nitty gritty of whether they would get a second chance. But I actually ended up so engaged in how their story started, as young as they were on meeting at 13.

I ended up racing through this book in the end because I just couldn’t stop and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a more contemporary love story about friendship and love and how they can turn into so much more.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this story and I can’t wait for more from this author.

Loved it! I loved the characters, their story, the uniquely Canadian references. Well written. I am surprised this is the author’s first novel. Sam and Percy’s friendship and pure and innocent love for each other when they are younger depicts first love so well. I can almost feel as though I am at the lake, eating ice cream and experimenting summertime memories along with them.. The other friendships, relationships , betrayals, insecurities, jealousies, love for family described were not only believable, I was feeling all the feelings along with the characters. Definitely recommend and I’m looking forward to the next book!

Carley Fortune shaped the dream of a soul mate into a modern day romance and, yes, probably wrote the hottest summer read of 2022!

We meet Percy as an adult who has built a successful, busy world for herself, one that allows her to function, but keeps her safe from emotional involvement. Slowly, in flashbacks to her younger self, we learn about her great, persisting love and her deep hurt and self-loathing. The book is about lovers, brothers, friends, and how life shapes relationships. It is also about sex and tender loving. I've devoured it in less than two days. Percy and Sam's story, set close to a glittering lake in Northern Ontario kept me spellbound, and the prose is simply beguiling!

This is an undemanding book; pure, delightful entertainment! I wished, I could have read it on a hot summer's day, lying on the dock by a glittering lake. How fitting that would have been!

I didn’t think that I could love this book more, but I was wrong. When the US publisher for EVERY SUMMER AFTER approved me to read this title back in September, I immediately fell in love with Sam and Percy. As someone who lives in Southern Ontario and has been going to her cottage in Northern Ontario her entire life, I felt like this was the book that I’ve been waiting for. This book was made for Ontario summers. It was made to be savoured on a dock with an Ontario wine in hand. I cannot recommend this stunning debut more. Carley is an incredible storyteller and I cannot wait to read whatever she writes next!

Thank you to the publisher for the chance to fall in love with Sam and Persephone all over again!

Every Summer After by Carley Fortune was like a wonderful trip back through my teenage years. The teenage angst, first love and those lazy summers spent hanging out with friends. I loved the Canadian aspects of the book too. From Tim Hortons to John Candy, Hudson Bay blankets, books and practically living in the water, I felt that I had been transported to those dreamy teenage years.
Percy and Sam's relationship was not without bumps and bruises along the way. Their journey grabbed hold of me and kept me reading into the wee hours of the night only to wake, pick up and continue reading upon waking. Hats off to Carley Fortune for creating this wonderful world in which to lose yourself!

Many thanks to #NetGalley and #PenguinRandomHouseCanada for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC in return for an honest opinion. #EverySummerAfter

Wow, I loved this one. I love books that are told in multiple tenses as it tends to build the story and keep you engaged - this one was no exception. The chapters in the present tense are set during the weekend of Sam’s mom’s funeral and I swear it felt like every one of these ended on a cliff hanger. I couldn’t wait to read more about the summers of the past that Sam and Percy spent together to figure out what actually happened between them. It’s a beautiful second chance romance, with a dose of drama and steam mixed in. I think most people will focus on Percy’s betrayal but for me, I think Sam’s was worse in a completely different way. I don’t want to give either issue away so I will leave it at that. Percy’s mental health was also something that I could connect with so I appreciated that being a focus as well.

I LOVE that this was a Canadian author’s debut and it was set in places I know about (that’s always pretty cool to me). Also can we talked about this cover? GORGEOUS.

Thank you so much to NetGallery and Penguin Random House Canada for this eARC! Canadians, do yourself a favour and pick this one up (you too Americans!)!!

Get your hands on this book as soon as you can!

All the stars for this wonderful debut novel by Carley Fortune.

Sam and Percy met when they were young teens by a beautiful lake. They had 6 summers together before it all fell apart. Due to a death Percy is forced to go back to the town she once loved and comes face to face with her past. I loved reading the flashbacks between the past and today. The long summer days spent on the lake with Sam.

Carley does a great job at immersing us in the life of this small town. I cannot recommend this book enough. I also can’t wait to see what she writes next. Highly recommended.

Thanks to Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest feedback.

This is the first time I have read book by this author . Personally, I the book was ok - there are 3 main characters , Sam , Percy and Charlie . The whole book revolves around what happened in the past (60-70% of the book) and what is happening in present . It is romantic story but in my opinion too slow and too stretched out.

Is there a betrayal that you would find unforgivable?

Carley Fortune has perfectly rendered the nostalgia of bygone summers at the lake and the unfathomable mystery of cottage life. In fact, her sense of nostalgia is so very contagious that you’ll be smiling as you read (and getting hot under the collar) only to become suddenly shocked when you realize those memories you are reading aren’t your own…but it feels as though they might have been. It’s a phenomenal debut beach read by a Canadian author.

Persephone (Percy) Fraser returns with her family every summer to their cottage in Barry’s Bay, Ontario. Thirteen year old Percy meets the Florek brothers, Sam and Charlie, on her first summer on the lake and quickly becomes best friends with Sam. They’re inseparable as friends and soon find young love. Suddenly, six years later, they stop speaking to one another and it’s another twelve years before a phone call has her quickly returning to the cottage. When she sees Sam again, she’s forced to face the very reason they stopped speaking.

It’s intense. It’s crushing. It’s hot.

You’ll need tissues. A lot.

Alternating between past and present, the author explores what it takes to reignite a friendship, including the journey to forgiveness and redemption.

“The lopsided grin that curves his mouth is a drug I’ve never kicked.”

I am in awe of this debut author’s ability to write such a palpable, magical summer romance. Percy and Sam are right up there with my favourite book couple, K. A. Tucker’s Calla and Jonah. She examines a relationship that spans a few years and captures all the ‘hormone-fuelled angst and excitement of being a teenager.’ For those of us who’ve found ‘our person,’ we know exactly what Sam and Percy are experiencing; the elation of finding a friend who gets you like nobody else in the world does. For those of us who’ve screwed up a relationship and managed to get it back on track, know exactly the heaviness and emptiness these two are experiencing. Nothing feels right again. Nothing. Until the rift is fixed. This is one of those books that I'll be thinking about for a long time and gush about whenever I talk to a bookish friend. This author is one to watch - she'll be in the spotlight soon. Grab this book NOW!

You’ll have to read to find out what happened and if their relationship can be mended.

I was gifted this advance copy by Carley Fortune, Penguin Random House Canada, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

' "Swear on our friendship bracelet." ... then he reached over and hooked his index finger under my bracelet, giving it a gentle tug. '

Prepare for me to never shut up about this book. If you loved Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren you'll adore this too. Childhood best friends to lovers to strangers to reunited lovers again! This trope wins over all. Their story is told through dual timelines of then 17-12 years ago and current day 30 year old Persephone. Persephone's (Percy, 13) parents buy a cabin in Barry's bay, which so happens to be right next door to a single mother (Sue Florek, my love) of two boys (Sam Florek, 13 and Charlie Florek, 15) in similar age to Percy. Sam and Percy quick to connect with each other become inseparable for that first summer, only being connected through the school year by email and holidays visits. Persephone is now heading back to Barry's Bay after not visiting for 12 years after Charlie calls to let Persephone know Sue - his mother, has passed away from cancer and Persephone is invited to come to the funeral. Present day Persephone faults herself for a life ruining event 12 years ago, since then she hasn't been back to Barry's Bay or spoken to either of the Florek boy. You are reading their relationship as each others first loves while simultaneously reading their relationship as they reconnect where you've still yet to learn what event destroyed their relationship.

Seriously I could gush about this book for days! But it would give away so many spoilers. It very much reminds me of LAOW by Clo - One of if not, my favourite book. One chapter in an I knew this would be another 5 star read. A top read for 2022, and a spot in my top 10 books! As a debut book too, I'm adding Carley Fortune to my insta-buy authors.

Thank you Netgalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the Digital Arc in exchange for my honest review!

Every Summer After by Carley Fortune is a story about growing up, the impact of our mistakes, second chances and human connection. Persephone (Percy) Fraser meets Sam Florek one summer when her family buys a summer home next door to his family’s home in Barry’s Bay, Ontario. Percy and Sam strike up a quick friendship. Over the next 6 years Percy and her family return to Barry’s Bay from their home in Toronto for summers, Thanksgiving, Christmas and March break, until Percy makes a life-altering mistake and ends up spending the next 10 years away from Barry’s Bay and Sam. Percy receives a phone call from Sam’s brother, Charlie with some sad news bringing Percy back to Barry’s Bay and reconnecting with Sam and ultimately facing her mistake from a decade prior head on.

This book is told over the course of six years in the past and one weekend in the present. This is the authors debut novel and it was wonderfully written, both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

CW: death of a parent, panic attacks, cheating.
