Every Summer After
For Persephone Fraser life became perfect after her parents bought a summer cottage east of Toronto. There , the summer she was about 13, she began her friendship with teens Sam and Charlie Florek, who had the cottage next door with their widowed mother.

This is a coming of age story. Every summer for six years Sam and Percy became close and eventually realized it was love. They decided they should spend the rest of their lives together. As Sam proposed to Percy, something she had longed to hear, she surprisingly refused.

What happened that she refused something so important to her? Why did she leave and never return for 12 years? Why did she finally return?

I enjoyed this book from start to finish. The characters come to life and one feels the love between Sam and Percy grow from friendship to passion.

Many thanks to Penguin Random House for allowing me to read and review a sweet story.

“”Hello  .  .  . Percy?” The voice is deep and soft. It’s one I haven’t heard in more than a decade, but so familiar I’m suddenly thirteen years old and slathered in SPF 45, reading paperbacks on the dock. I’m sixteen and peeling off my clothes to jump into the lake, naked and sticky after a shift at the Tavern. I’m seventeen and lying on Sam’s bed in a damp bathing suit, watching his long fingers move across the anatomy textbook he’s studying by my feet.”

Canadian Carley Fortune’s debut, “Every Summer After,” is told in alternating “now” and “then” timelines over the course of six summers and one weekend. It follows 13-year-old Persephone “Percy” Fraser and Sam Florek, through their teenage years to adulthood.

When Percy’s parents buy a cottage in Barry’s Bay on the shores of Kamaniskeg Lake in Ontario, she spends every summer for six years there with her family and becomes friends with the next door neighbor boys who are year-rounders, Sam and his brother, Charlie. Percy and Sam become best friends and fall in love despite going to different schools and living in different places.

Then something happens to cause a rift between them. Percy flees Madawaska Valley’s cottage country for Toronto and they do not speak to each other over a decade.

Unexpectedly, Percy receives a call to return to Barry’s Bay to attend Sam’s mother’s funeral and, of course, once again she is face to face with Sam, the love of her life.

“Every Summer After” is a contemporary love story. It’s about young love and how the choices we make can impact the rest of our lives. “The Summer After” is nuanced and poignant. Casey Fortune is witty, her writing is beautiful and the pacing is superb.

A huge thank you to @Netgalley and @PenguinRandomCa for the ARC.

4.5 stars, rounded up :)

i absolutely loved pretty much everything about this book. it very much reminded me of “the summer i turned pretty” mixed with “love and other words,” and i really, really loved it! the dual timeline throughout the novel was really well-written, and i liked how it gave a nice overview of everything that happened in the past and in the present; the story was pretty fast-paced.

the characters in this book were all really loveable and distinct from each other (i especially loved delilah), and they all felt very realistic. the romance was also really well-written, and i loved how the author fully developed the characters’ friendship before they were in a relationship! friends to lovers and second chance romance are a few of my favourite tropes, so i really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it :)

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it as a summer read! This book for me seemed like one you could enjoy reading on a dock or at the beach. She is a talented author and looking forward to reading more in the future from her.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of Every Summer After by Carley Fortune!

This is not a book I would usually read, but I decided I needed a break from all the horror books I had been reading. I am glad I took a chance! I had previously read Emily Henry's Beach Read, and this book reminded me of it, so if you enjoy Emily Henry, you will love this book. If you love love stories and friends to lover stories, you will love this story. It also take place in Canada, so that is a bonus.

It was an easy read and I read it in one sitting. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to fall in love. I was given an ARC of this book for an honest review.

This is definitely the beach read of the summer! I could not put this book down and stayed up way to late finishing it 🤗

𝑺𝒊𝒙 𝒔𝒖𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒏 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆. 𝑶𝒏𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕. 𝑨 𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒌𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕.

This book takes place over the course of six years in the past, and one weekend in the present, with alternating chapters. I loved how the chapters flowed and it made it easy to fall in love with these characters and this story! (Except for one incident that had my blood boiling, but you will have to read to find out).

I especially loved that this was a debut novel written by Canadian author Carley Fortune. Taking place between Toronto and Barry’s Bay cottage country, it’s so refreshing to be able to picture places in a book that I’ve actually been too. And for Ontario’s gorgeous cottage country to be represented!

I spent many summers at my Uncle’s cottage and while I never found my true love or had summer romances there, I could definitely relate to the other aspects of the story. Finding friendships, friendship bracelets, summer nights, swimming in the lake, small town vibes and local restaurants and stores. This book really has it all.

The writing in this story is just so beautiful, emotional and funny. A real coming of age story with a second chance at love.

And can we take a moment to mention how beautiful the cover is! I highly recommend picking this one up, you won’t regret it.

Thank you @netgalley, @penguinrandomca and @penguincanada for an advanced copy for an honest review. This book is available now!!

A cute love story that's perfect for the summer, and maybe every summery after. Just kidding it wasn't that good.

Persephone's parents buy a cottage in Barry's Bay, a small cottage town in northern Ontario and on the first summer they're there, Persephone meets Sam, the boy who lives in the cottage next door. Their friendship started when they were pre-teens and blossomed into something beyond friendship over the next six years. But after that summer in their first year of university, they haven't seen each other in ten years. We follow this love story over the six years and one weekend when Persephone and Sam will meet again.

Is it puppy love or real love? Whatever it was, the ending was too predictable.

My overall rating is 3/5.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the kind of book you want to pick up for summer vacation as you read by the water.

Fortune does an excellent job of weaving the two timelines of past and present, giving us just enough backstory and keeping us guessing about what went down between Percy and Sam. A great mix of drama, love, and angst!

I love supporting Canadian authors, so I bought myself a copy of the book after reading it and look forward to rereading it in the summers to come.

Thanks to Penguin Random House Canada for sending me an ARC on NetGalley.

This. Book. Was. So. Freaking. Good!! Every Summer After follows main character Percy as her family purchases a cottage and she meets neighbour Sam. It flips back and forth between when they first met (13) and currently (30) and the summers between ages 13-18 that details their friendship and love story.

This book hit me right in the feels with the nostalgia of spending summers, weekends and holidays at our family cottage. Fortune does an excellent job encapsulating the magic that is summer at the lake, and the difficulties navigating seasonal friendships, as well as friendships in general through difficult years.

Sam and Percy have skyrocketed to one of my favourite friends to lovers/second chance romance duos and I would absolutely love another book that’s set in this same dreamy lake setting.

I will absolutely be buying myself a physical copy of this book, and while I’m not much a of a re-reader, I already can’t wait to read it again.

Thank you so much to Penguin Random House Canada for the gifted copy! After a friend (Liz, currently summerdaystories on Instagram) pointed out this book felt like Taylor Jenkins Reid meets cottage country, that’s exactly what I’m going with to describe this author! Our Canadian version of TJR <3

This is also kind of reminiscent of a mashup of Seven Days in June meets People We Meet On Vacation. (For all those who hated PWMOV like I did…trust me, this is WAY better!)

The way this book was written was just completely easy to sit and forget the world exists. It’s kind of sad that this is a debut, because I have no backlist of this author to go read now. When is Carley’s next book coming out? 😂

The characters are so real, and oddly comforting at the same time? I felt like I was escaping to go visit them for summer vacation everytime I opened this. I loved the way it was all paced, flipping from present day to the summer they first met, and working our way up as they got older.

Definitely definitely definitely read this book! And if you can get your hands on the Canadian cover edition, even better! (Sorry US, but that cover does not do this book justice at all).

This is easily one of my favourite books of this year - maybe even ever ! This definitely had echoes of Love And Other Words, another one of my absolute favourites, but bonus points for being Canadian 🇨🇦 The story pulls you right in from the beginning, jumping from the present to each summer of the past 13 years. It has All. The. Feels, delving into teenage angst, first love, and finding your person - and the mistakes made alongtheway. It is so completely immersive that you're truly feeling all the emotions along with the main characters. I'm so impressed that this I a debut novel, it feels like the work of a seasoned writer at the top of her craft. I can't recommend this enough, put this one at the top of your TBR !!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Let me start by saying I read this book in 2 days after months of not being able to be captivated by a story.. This is a story about first love, what could have been and if that love can be redeemed.

I read a review where it stated this felt like a YA book but I never felt that way. I felt going back was necessary to understand th relationship. Who has never longed for that first love? Reading brought me right there as a teenager during summer breaks.

Although the story was predictable as it was pretty easy to guess what had happened to break them up, I still enjoyed it a lot. It did remind me of Emily Henry’s work. I will for sure check this author’s next book.

I do recommend for anyone who wishes to go down memory lane and remember how it feels to fall in love and how it feels to be face to face again!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me an e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

Every Summer After might be my favourite romance I’ve ever read. I fell in love with the main characters and their love story. I devoured this is one day. Thank you to Netgalley for the advanced copy.

I love a first love romance and a second chance romance and this book has both of those tropes. Spanning 13 years we follow the friendship of Percy and Sam as it turns into romance. The book is told with dual timelines - past and present. Percy and Sam meet at age 13 when Percy starts going to her family’s new lake cabin. They bond instantly as friends and then as the years and summers pass their romance begins. The summer before they start university everything falls apart. The book gives you all the feels and tugs on the emotions. I loved the story and the setting. Most of the book happens when Percy is at the lake and it sounds like idyllic summer days. The characters are well written and with depth and the character development was perfect. The setting of the book is in Ontario, Canada and that was refreshing to see. This is a perfect book for summer! This is a debut author and I can’t wait to read what she writes next.

• This book was sooo good! I was hooked right from the start! Childhood best friends to lovers is one of my favourite tropes 💖 It definitely reminded me of Love and Other Words, and People We Meet On Vacation, but this book has a special place in my heart because it’s set in Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦! I loved all the little details because I can relate to sooo many things that they mentioned. I felt like I was swimming in Lake Ontario with the main characters

• Percy and Sam are soo dorky and cute 🥰 The tension and the longing is just chef’s kiss 😘 I love how they were always sooo supportive of each other and I loved getting to see them grow together ❤️ As for the side characters, I liked Charlie but I’m still wondering what he truly felt during those summers and what he feels about everything now 🤔 And as for Delilah, I thought I was gonna hate her but she was actually such a great friend to Percy 👏🏼 She grew on me in the end

• To be honest, I kind of saw the twist coming and I really didn’t like it 💔 I would’ve given this a 5 star ⭐️ rating if it weren’t for the twist. I wish the ending was longer because I just needed a chapter or two to digest what happened. Percy and Sam had 12 years to process and move on from it but as the reader, I needed more time to recover and heal from that summer 😭 I also would’ve loved to read Sam’s POV. I think it would’ve helped me get the closure that I needed if I saw how Sam was hurting and how he slowly forgave everyone in the end

Overall, it was an amazing read and a great debut novel!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Are 100,000,000 stars too many to give this book?! What a read!!

For Persephone Fraser the summers spent at her family cottage in Barry's Bay, Ontario were home. More specifically, the time she spent each summer with her best friend Sam.

For six summers, Percy and Sam were inseparable. After a catastrophic argument, the two drift apart and go forward in life never speaking again. But when life brings Percy back to the lake, her connection with Sam is as undeniable as it had always been. But until she can confront the decisions she made, the two will never know whether their love is bigger than the biggest mistakes of their past. But, can you ever really go home again?

I went into this liking the premise, but not really knowing what to expect and I was blown away.
This book brought up SO MUCH nostalgia for me. I grew up just outside of Toronto and, as a kid, my family would pack up every Friday to head to the cottage for the weekend. Layer in memories of first love and high school romance, and Every Summer After gave me all of the feels.

Read if you love:
🍦 Childhood sweethearts
🍦 Second chance romance
🍦 Small town setting
🍦 Slow burn
🍦 Undeniable chemistry between your MCs

Thank you to NetGalley, Penguin Random House Canada, Viking, and Carley Fortune for an advanced copy. This is my honest review. #EverySummerAfter #NetGalley

I loved this book, and was so caught up in the timelines and what the final outcome would be…..it’s a beautifully written story of growing up, best friends, summers at the lake, falling in love, deceit, with twists and turns along the way. Told on past and present timelines the writer had me hooked right away. I love that the setting for the story is in Ontario Canada and are places I have been or live close to…..I felt like I could really feel being there.
If your looking for a great cottage read pick a copy up , I read it in 2 days.

I received a free copy from NetGalley and all opinions are my own. I would recommend this book to friends and my book club.

This book is like reading a suprisingly smutty mystery novel. The anticipation of what had happened is drawn out delicately, with enough space between plot reveals and the reader's desire to know to enhance the speculatory nature of a mystery that the reader wants to solve.
The beautiful backdrop of the storyline is so well described that the reader is able to fall into the imagery, becoming one with the story and not simply reading a book with some descriptions.

For a first novel this work is well defined and easy to read. It provides a complex simplicity that attracts the reader into the narrative, allowing the reader to both build a relationship with all characters and to guess at what is to come in the character relationships..
