| About |

It's the party to end all parties....but not everyone is here to celebrate.
On New Year's Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests. His vacation homes on Mirror Lake are a success, and he's generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbors.
But by midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake.
On New Year's Day, Ffion Morgan has a village full of suspects. The tiny community is her home, so the suspects are her neighbors, friends and family—and Ffion has her own secrets to protect.
With a lie uncovered at every turn, soon the question isn't who wanted Rhys dead...but who finally killed him.
In a village with this many secrets, murder is just the beginning.

Great mystery, awesome setup for a series and for a first book of a series it really fleshes out all the current characters. Slow start, doesn’t really pick up any pace in the middle. Definitely not a fast paced thriller. It’s an interesting story, very procedural. Liking the twists. Really got good in the middle. Enjoyed all the different perspectives, each seemed to tell their own story to unravel. The end was seriously shocking! Can’t wait for the next book, throughly invested in these characters and what’s next for them.

The hostage is one of my favorite books. This one did not disappoint either. I absolutely loved it. She has such talent. I won't look at parties the same way.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the Arc. I had a hard time with this book. For a thriller, I found the plot incredibly slow moving, and hard to follow with the back and forth timeline. I have read other Claire Macintosh books and enjoyed them, and wanted to like this much more than I did.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh. There was a large cast of characters, a slew of secrets, some "class warfare" and of course, murder to boot. The book was fast moving, told from a variety of perspectives and kept me engaged the entire time. I would say there is nothing earth shattering or remarkably new in regard to this thriller, but for those who enjoy them, a great read!

I couldn’t finish this book. I tried and kept giving it chances but I wasn’t a fan and could not get into it. It was very boring to me.

The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh was a classic mystery thriller with a few delightful twists and turns. This fast-paced novel kept me turning pages late into the night. With colorful characters, a stunning setting and old small-town secrets, this story has it all. Kudos to Clare Mackintosh!

First off, thank you so much to the publisher for this ARC!
I loved the tense atmosphere in this book; I read this book in one night which wasn’t my intention when I sat down to read it! This is my second book by this author and while the first book I read was good and I liked it, this book made me a fan of the author and I will be going back to read more of her books now. I don’t want to spoil too much but I really enjoyed how the storylines in this book got woven together and I was very satisfied with the ending!

Big fan of Claire Mackintosh and always enjoy her books. This was no exception. I did have trouble with the Welsh dialogue at times, and feel like I have some lack of closure at the end, but as always kne what seemed like the end, really had some more twists and turns.

This was my first book by this author. I had some trouble finding it interesting, but once I do we’re off and running! On New Year's Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests. His vacation homes on Mirror Lake are a success, and he's generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbours. But by midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake. The backdrop to the story is the rift between the local Welsh community and the wealthy English incomers. We learn there are a lot of dark secrets on both sides and a picture builds up of the victim with a good mystery surrounding the identity of the killer. There are some shocking revelations about the killer. I liked the partnership of Leo and Ffion who are fantastic characters and very well portrayed.. Overall, this is a good multilayered mystery in a great setting and I really appreciate the Welsh feel of it. I hope we read more of Ffion and Leo as they’re too good for just the one appearance.

This is the first book I've read by Clare Mackintosh and I absolutely loved it.
Filled with twists and turns, The Last Party will keep you guessing until the very end.
A mystery that starts off with bang, a dead body on New Years Eve, we follow .Ffion Morgan as she wades her way through the many potential suspects who all have a good reason for wanting the victim dead.
Filled with beautiful writing, intriguing characters, and a well plotted story I couldn't put it down.

Twisted Twizzlers! 😳😯🤯🤯

Well holy puff balls! Mother otter! As always, Mackintosh delivers a chilling, dark thriller with finesse! Incredibly tense, shocking & raw for a crazy thriller that will leave you gasping & shuddering. She knows how to pull you in and throw ample suspicion onto a plot, leaving you completely unsure so when she delivers the whodunnit, it concludes with such surprise and earthquake-like ending. The pace is set perfectly and everyone involved becomes suspect. The revelations of each characters secrets are juicy, dark and at times, even heartbreaking. Make sure you have a comfortable blanket to read with this intense mystery because you'll need it to get through! Once again, an absolute knock out by a fab author I've adored since she her debut! You'll devour this as fast I did - all at once with no shame of putting life on hold!

Normally a big fan of Clare Mackintosh’s books but this title fell short for me. The first part of the book was very slow paced and contained way to many characters. The second part did pull me in and I was able to finish the book. Interested to find out what happens in book two.

This is a new author for me; the Welch words reminded me of slogging through a Tolstoy story; enunciations at the beginning would have been a tremendous help. Rhys Lloyd, a famous singer on a downslide in his career, has come up with a way to make money out of his beautiful hometown on property he inherited on beautiful Mirror Lake, shadowed by a mountain, are expensive lodges on the English side of the lake, the other is Welsh, and we have our first contentious issue, the small town Welsh community who resent the wealthy English who have bought into their natural paradise. I, for one, do not care for class warfare; it smacks of jealousy; if the locals cannot afford the lakeside homes, then all English homeowners must be tacky, crass, greedy, and possibly a murderer! Rhys has made plenty of enemies, some very close to home, which is the entirety of the story, who murdered Rhys, and why. The two detectives, Leo from the Major Crimes Unit on the English side and Detective Constable Ffion Morgan from the Welsh side, Ffion has a potty mouth, and Leo is too frail for me; not my favorite combination for an investigative team. The first part is a tad too repetitive about Ffion's feminist attitude; we get it; she thinks she is hot. This is not a thriller, in my opinion, it is a mystery about what would drive someone to murder, and in my opinion, like Agatha Christie's Hercules Poirot, "The rule of law must be upheld, even when it falters, we must hold it higher" I do not care for any story where the murderer gets away with it, my rule of law is high unless it is self - defense, then I can understand how that could happen. I'm afraid I have to disagree with the feminist philosophy that it is old-fashioned to be careful about the time of the day when women are alone in the streets. Younger girls believe they have asserted their rights to be where they want when they want, when in reality, while reading this story, a young mother of two was kidnapped while jogging at 4:30 in the morning and murdered. Some advice stands the test of common sense; evil exists; take someone with you. I would give it a 3.5; you will see three stars, but it deserves a bit more.

I was immediately drawn in to the atmospheric small town tucked away in the mountains between Wales and England, but not the main characters. That changed quickly as Ffion and Leo are drawn together to investigate the death of a singer who had returned to his childhood home to build a controversial holiday village. I loved seeing how both detectives slowly bring to light the secrets of the various suspects, and share their own secrets with each other. The plot twists kept coming so I stopped trying to figure out who did it and just went along for the ride. I look forward to the next book in the series to see how the relationship between the detectives develops, and to see if the final secret impacts it. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and especially Clare Mackintosh for this marvelous book.

Holy bunch of suspects!

It's no secret that there are many people who have a reason to dislike Rhys Lloyd. But there are secrets between the wealthy members of The Shore, the resort lodges he co-built. Then there are the secrets of the Welsh townspeople who once owned a small patch of the property The Shore sits on. But there are also secrets in the town of Cwm Coed, which sits directly across from The Shore.

All these secrets converge on New Year's Eve/New Year's Day, when Rhys is found floating in Mirror Lake. There are many reports of his behavior that conflict with the coroner's report. What really happened to Rhys that night?

Leo Brady from England and Ffion Morgan from Wales are police on opposite sides of the dividing line between their countries, but must work together to find out the answer. I love that the author included Welsh dialect (with translations) that helped give the reader a feel for the pride that unites the community.

Thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for an advance reader's copy.

Thank you for the ARC! I don't usually like books about cops but this was so good. The beginning made our protagonist relatable and picturing her sneaking out of the room was hilarious. I loved seeing the guys perspective later too. My gosh he had it wrong!
I love it when serious book also have humor in there. I loved the victim and his whole demise too.
The ending was the best part though. That was the best ending.

After having read a few books by Clare Mackintosh in the past and having enjoyed them, I was super excited to be able to read The Last Party. Once again, Mackintosh did not disappoint!

I will admit however, that I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this book. This book did start off rather slow with the introduction of far too many characters and locations. I even had to look up the pronunciation of many words that were in Welsh, and also that of our main characters name, Ffion.
With that being said, I eventually came to love this book because of our main character, Ffion Morgan. At first, I found her a bit devious and self centered. As the story progressed, and more of Ffion’s history and backstory was revealed, she is now one of my favorite characters in a book.

The Last Party also has two parts to the story. Once Part Two begins, this story really takes off and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. This is a police thriller that involves the work of Ffion Morgan and her partner, Leo Brady (another character who grew on me). Ffion and Leo have a great chemistry working together to solve the murder of the wealthy Rhys Lloyd on New Year’s Eve. Of course, there was a party that consisted of lots of suspects that kept me guessing until the very end. And even the very end gave me yet another twist I did not expect…

I highly recommend reading The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh, and I’m very happy to know that DC Ffion Morgan #2 is presently in the works! I cannot wait to read that, because this is definitely a series that is not to be missed!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for my advanced digital review copy. Publication date is: November 8, 2022.
