This book is a great example of why this author is one of my favorites. Complex characters and suspense driven plots keep you up way past bedtime. This one has a large pool of suspects. And they all seem guilty of something. There are several twists and my jaw dropped a couple of times. I was rooting for Marisa. I couldn't put this one down.

What The Skittles?! 😳😯😳🤯😯

Mother Fluffer!! 😳 What a thrill-joy ride! I mean.. fluff sakes! I absolutely loved how Burton seemlessly and smoothly connected the different view points in this book that kept it from being confusing or overwhelming & made it far more intriguing. The connection of the lies & secrets all come together at the end; although I will say I still have some questions & felt a tad unsatisfied with the ending. But even that being said I was pleased & still enjoyed the entire journey.
Claire & Marisa were twins until one night after a party, Claire disappeared & was found four days later murdered when she was sixteen. The case turned cold and left Marisa and her older sister, Brit, left to pick up the pieces. Now, fourteen years later, Marisa has just turned thirty, turned an up & coming photography artist but still haunted by the past. A car accident from over a year ago has left some gaps in her memory around that time that leave her uneasy. As Marisa tries to get footing again and unearth what happened to her sister, someone is always lurking in the shadows watching her movements and ultimately wanting her.
This is my first book by this fantastic author & I assure you it will not be my last! She knows how to capture you, hold you down & refuses to let you go all along the way in the lead up. Suspense and thrill are endless in this novel & will keep you up until late into the night.

Thank you to NetGalley & Montlake for this DARC.

I’m going through my read list on GoodReads recently, I’ve noticed a bit of a theme going with some of the books I’ve read. The theme is that of the long dead family member (usually a sister), the unsolved crime and the heroine who now wants to solve the case. I can’t tell if it’s me constantly picking these types of books or if it’s a new wave/trend in fiction, like vampires and MC biker clubs were a few years ago.
In any case, ‘The Lies I Told’ is the story of Marisa Stockton, who 14 years ago lost her twin sister Clare to a vicious crime. No one has been arrested for the crime and the case remains unsolved. Marisa as you can imagine has not dealt very well with the death of her twin, turning to drugs and alcohol to help herself manage. So when Marisa is involved in a car accident and the paramedics suspect drugs and alcohol, nobody believes her when she says she’s been sober for nearly a year. That she’s been working hard on herself, her sobriety and her photography. Even her older sister Brit thinks she’s fallen off the wagon.
But Marisa is missing 10 days of her memory surrounding the crash. Why was she in that particular suburb when she crashed her car? Was someone chasing her? And why is her phone missing? Marisa is sure the answers will help her stop the growing anxiety and fear that someone is stalking her. If only she could remember.
‘The Lies I Told’ was a good suspense/mystery read, even though I didn’t particularly like most of the characters. I couldn’t figure out why none of them wanted to know who killed Clare all those years ago. Like it wasn’t a big deal to them that a killer was still roaming around. As long as their lives remained the same who cares right? And while I had figured out the bad guy pretty quickly, there was still enough twists and turns to make the last few chapters interesting. I even thought some of the plot twists would make a good sequel. 3.5 stars from me.

Marisa can't remember the car accident she had she doesn't remember being drunk or the time up to the accident. Brit is the oldest the mother hen since both of their parent's have passed and Marisa's twin was murdered. Bringing some of Marisa's and Clares friends together for the twins 30 birthday has caused Marisa heartache but also memories to come back memories that people don't want remembered. This was an ARC copy and I appreciate the opportunity to read and review. I can say I am not a friend of first person writing and this took me by surprise from a book written by Mary Burton. I prefer her original style of writing not this type. Story line was good but would have preferred the old writing style.

The way she brought the past back to the present was well done. The twists along the way kept the story interesting. I found myself connected to Marisa and feeling the same emotions she went through.
I would have loved for a little more closure on the trials of David and Jack.

Loved all the points of view of each of the characters, it really let you into their thoughts and minds and still kept you guessing lol...once I started reading I couldn't put it down! 5 stars for me.

The Lies I Told is a twisted psychological thriller where the past and present collide. Marisa’s identical twin Clare was murdered fourteen years ago. Marisa spent thirteen of those years in an alcoholic daze. Sober for a year, Marisa is determined to find out who murdered Clare with just a few weeks before the lead detective on the case retires. Told in alternating points of view between the past and present, Marisa finds out no one told the truth fourteen years ago and maybe Clare’s tendency to pretend to be Marisa led to her death. Twisted and shocking, the story is like a winding mountain road as the dark turns just keep coming for an unputtdownable whodunnit where the only likable character is Marisa. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.

The title should read “we told' because everyone does their fair share in this novel.
Drugs and alcohol were the crutches for Marissa. Her twin sister was killed 14 years ago at a New Years party and her case remains unsolved and has dictated her life. But she’s been sober for the past year and is on a mission to find out what really happened that night.
The detective on the case has worked doggedly on this case without success and is soon to retire.  Marissa knows his replacement will not make her sister a priority and feels a final push to revisit the case with his help and to put this behind her.
After a recent accident, Marissa has a memory lapse for that time and starts tracking down the friends that were at the party to revisit that night. The cast of characters and their association to that tragic night provides a series of surprising twists doled out in increments that keeps us turning the pages.

AWESOME psychological thriller of a woman who lost her twin when she was 16. A murder that was never solved & the mental fallout suffered by the surviving family. Normally I do not read books written in first person, but Mary Burton is as automatic read for me since I love her books & believe she is a terrific author. Well written with great insight regarding the frailties of the human psyche. Enjoyed fully & RECOMMEND all her thrillers highly. Thanks to #Mary Burton & # NetGalley for this ARC in return for my honest review

For a book that consumed me, it also left me unsatisfied. I felt like there were things missing and believability was low.

Marisa and Clare are identical twins—well, were. Clare was murdered 14 years ago and the case went unsolved. This resulted in Marisa turning to drugs and alcohol as she constantly felt haunted by the case. All these years later, and with her other sister Brit, Brit's boyfriend, and some old friends, she's trying to turn herself around and focuses on Clare's case before the lead detective retires. Only that searching for answers, she has only put herself in danger.

Marisa and Clare Stockton were identical twins bonded before birth. Fourteen years ago at age sixteen, Clare was strangled and her naked body was left on the banks of the James River.
Marisa being a photographer has taken many pictures of the area where Clare's body was found, hoping that one of the black and white photos would point to who the killer was.
Mary Burton's "The Lies I Told" takes you on a journey to the truth. Be prepared to lose a little sleep as this is a book that is very hard to put down!!!

Must read!!

This is one of best thrillers I’ve read!

Everyone lies. Marisa is haunted by her twin sister’s, Clare, death. After a twisted childhood and battle with addiction, she is finally on track with her life, giving her first art show. Then it comes crashing down. Literally. A crash leaves her with a blank period of that time. Why did she crash? How is it connected with her sisters death from 14 years ago? One thing she knows for sure is that everyone lies.

This book was just okay for me. It's a very slow burn, character driven mystery. A theme of the story is "everyone lies" and that was definitely proved correct. Through different points of view, we see all the lies these characters tell each other. I enjoyed some of the POVs but would have liked some consistency. Some characters we only heard from once or twice and it seemed kind of random. It made it difficult for me to keep stories straight.

Throughout the first half of the book, there are no big reveals or twists or anything to really keep you engaged. Then there are two pretty big reveals within pages of each other. I wish the twists would have been a little spread out more. I think it would have kept my attention.

Overall, an okay read, but nothing I would rush to the store to buy.

Clair was murdered 14 years ago and her killer was never caught. this left Marisa, her identical twin in an emotional mess. Now Marisa is 30 years old and after a nearly fatal car crash, her nightmares and fears are worse than before. which will lead to her to be finally sober. now that her head is clear after all those time, she decides to go over her sister's murder case. in doing so she finds out about a lot of secrets and lies that could change her entire world. but can she find the murderer? is it what she really wants?

the story was and easy read and did hook me right from the beginning. though my issue is the ending. it was not that satisfying and lots of my questions left unanswered, which was really disappointing. overall it was a good read but you have to keep your expectations low about the ending.

thanks to NetGallery for providing my copy.

Identical twin sisters, both wanton and wilful, not afraid to live their lives as they want. Then Clare is murdered at the age of 16 and Marisa, the survivor, spirals deeper into drugs and alcoholism. 14 years later, Marisa has been clean for a year and is becoming successful as a photographer. She has a car accident and can't remember 10 days of her life. Everyone assumes it's drugs but Marisa is sure it's not, but only has tiny flashbacks that mean nothing.
This is a dark story, not easy reading, and it tells the story from different perspectives, that of Marisa, her elder sister Brit, the about to retire detective who is haunted by Clare's murder and has a favourite saying " Everyone lies" and of course the murderer. The characters are all complex and even Marisa is not particularly likeable at times she is so driven by her demons. She turns back to alcohol one night and I kept thinking "Don't drink please" but of course she did and all the while the murderer is getting closer.
Not quite Mary Burton's usual style, but I still had to read right to the end. Dark and compelling, a completely dysfunctional family and circle of friends who each had their own agenda.....to lie!

Thanks to Mary and NetGalley for my ARC

Wow. This book started off mysterious and kept you guessing till the end. This was my first Mary Burton book. There were so many twists and turns, you didn't know who the killer was. At one point, it felt like it could be everyone! The writing at some points seemed a little choppy, and sometimes I felt I needed more backstory to the characters. Sometimes it felt as if this was the 2nd book in a series, and I hadn't read the first one. But even with some parts being vague, I still was captivated and read the book in one sitting. I look forward to reading more of Mary Burton's works.
