A birthday cake which turned into a literal mud cake!

This book was about a bunny who wanted to learn how to make a birthday cake, and got help from the master chef a turtle. What can go wrong?

What a fun and cute read, and it had some fun facts written into it along with the cake recipe! The illustrations made this book both fun and adorable to read.

I definitely recommend this book!

Thank you to the Oni Press and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this delightful book. This fun book is about birthday cakes and the virtue of patience. Young readers would adore this great story as they relate to the impatient bunny.

Very funny, my 4 and 6 year old were laughing at every page with lots of information thrown in as well. A book they enjoyed reading with me and spending a lot of time looking at on their own.

Shelly and her apprentice baker, Bucky, are tasked with making a cake for the party. The only problem is Shelley takes such a long time to do anything, including baking. Bucky is sure he can find a way to speed things up, but not all of his shortcuts are good ideas.

This is a fun reimagining of the classic fable 'The Tortoise and The Hare'. The illustrations show this comparison well, showing how little Shelly can accomplish while Bucky is racing around. Throughout, there is humour that strikes a good balance between nonsensical and relatable, and the story concludes with a kind resolution showing the protagonists coming together to support one another.

For use in educational settings, this would be a helpful tool for demonstrating written instructions or as an example of taking one's time to achieve a task well. As a reading experience, it has clear actions for children to mimic, such as Bucky collecting the ingredients, which would be ideal as a lesson and an aid to learning the story.

Periodically, there are some nicely included historical facts to provide context, however, these don't match the target age range; they may know about the Roman Empire but few will know of the Industrial Revolution. This is fine to include such references (actually, it's a very positive thing) but additional information is required to explain them. Yet, this is not true for all of them as the history given about the candles does this better.

The topic and writing style make this ideal for reading to four to eight-year-olds. From the vocabulary used and how much of it is phonetically decodable, a child would be about seven years old to read this independently or with minimal support.

However, solely from a logistical perspective, I have to wonder, whose birthday is it? This is not specified in the text, nor is it clear from the illustrations.

Super fun book to read. There is a major spelling error in the ARC on the first page--"bithday" instead of "birthday". Other than that it is a fun picture book/storytime read!

This is a cute take on the classic Tortoise and Hare tail! Shelly and Bucky are baking a birthday cake for a party. As Shelly starts to teach Bucky how to bake the cake, he gets impatient and decides to speed things up with his own edits to the cake. Unfortunately, it doesn't turn out so good!

As someone who loves to bake, I loved that there were explanation of why certain ingredients go into the cake as well as the importance of patience (classic to the Tortoise and Hare). The illustrations were also very cute!

Such a lovely childrens book. I love that there are different conversation threads on each page so a child can get a sense of character. It is a fun book with a neat moral at the end.
