First, I know almost nothing about wines besides being able to separate white from red and dry from sweet, but have always remained intrigued although clueless as to pick a good one. Alice takes you on a journey to do just that, not because of name brands, but because of the wine's history and story as to how and where and what technique is used, but in a way that is like telling stories about a friends personality and/or quirks. Along the way, you also get to know Alice very well, from how she started her journey and through all the twists and turns into who she is today. Very down to earth and very unpretentious. I especially loved the wine list from different regions to try (and I shall!) Excellent job and no wonder she's called a gem. I can see why.
*I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. This review is my own opinion*

What I most loved about this book is the unpretentious approach to selecting and drinking wine. Too many essays about wine focus on the best of the best, which virtually none of us can either afford or appreciate. I enjoyed reading about her life and challenges but read the book mostly for its insights about wine, which I love to taste and enjoy with meals. She takes the intimidation factor out of wine cons;umtion, which I have noticed is a problem for a lot of novice wine lovers.

In brief, a book for fans of Alice Feiring, but a complicated, meandering read for those who aren't. Wine recommendations at the end of chapters are the most notable aspect but even these vary wildly in terms of usability and consistency.

A must read for all wine lovers! We follow the collected stories of Alice Feiring, a Jewish raised wine writer who ties in her passion for wine into personal stories from her life. We follow Alice from childhood to the start of Covid-19. This book made me want to drink more wine, as she gives recommendations with each chapter. It would be wonderful if we all loved something as much as Alice loves her wine! Perfect read for anyone who considers themselves a connoisseur!

This was a DNR unfortunately. I read about halfway and I had to call it quits. The stories are a bit erratic and not really the personal essay vibe that I was looking for. There isn't much reflection just a bunch of short snapshots of life - but they seemed a little mundane? Yeah I'd have a chortle here and there but I wish this book inspired more out of me. I definitely took notes on the wine recommendations tho!! That's a big plus of this book.
