This is funny, unusual and has some great characters. It cleverly explores the “what if” which we all face when handed a random opportunity. In this case, the protagonist takes the chance and hilarity ensues.

I finished reading When Jokers Were Kings in a matter of days whilst on a weekend away, and it was the perfect compliment to a beach side escape.
The main character is Engelbert 'Bertie' Jones, who is a mail clerk in a bank. At the bank's Christmas party, Bertie is given the opportunity to perform an Elvis Presley song, and he receives a very positive response.
When his best friend offers to be his 'manager' if Bertie agrees to become an Elvis impersonator, he decides to get on board as up until that point, Bertie's life hasn't been all that interesting.
As they hit the road, there are some funny moments along the way! Bertie starts to come out of his shell (and into his jewel-encrusted jumpsuit!) and he is in for the time of his life.
If you're after an easy and entertaining read then this is the book for you. I'd give it a solid 3 1/2 stars. I would've liked the story to finish with an epilogue as there were a couple of questions that I would've liked answers to, but it was a really good read!
