I’ve always been interested in and fascinated with the stories of Sherlock Holmes so this was a lovely read to get to know more about the author of such an iconic character! The illustrations are adorable and was so interesting to read about Arthur’s life and how Sherlock came to me.

This picture book introduces young readers to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes and many other books.and stories. It shThe cover of this book captures the feeling that Arthur had - as if the shadow of his creation, Sherlock, was literally hanging over him and everything he did. It must be the same feeling actors have when they play a very popular role and then are typecast into similar parts over and over. We know now that other authors worry about one character or series coloring how everyone will respond to their work; even J.K. Rowling used a pseudonym when she wanted to write something other than Harry Potter. But back when the Sherlock Holmes stories were first wowing readers, it wasn't as common a problem.

The narrative explains Arthur's childhood influences, his education, and the many adventures he had. Young readers may not know about his trips on board ships heading to the Arctic Ocean and to Africa. Or that he was a struggling young doctor when he invented his famous character. Many will probably laugh at the idea of fans writing letters to Sherlock because they believed he was real. Orson Welles once referred to Holmes as "the world's most famous man who never was!"

The illustrations capture scenes of Arthur looking through a barrel of bargain books outside a shop (trying to find what he could afford as a student on a budget), Arthur being rescued from the Arctic Ocean after falling in, and sitting at his desk while he works on a story. The illustrator also makes the feeling of being overwhelmed by Holmes obvious - in one scene the detective looms over Arthur as he tries to work, in another he plays his violin while Arthur covers his ears and fan mail blows off his desk.

Back matter includes an author's note, a photo of Arthur, and a list of sources. A great book to introduce youngsters to this author and his most famous creation.

'Arthur Who Wrote Sherlock' by Linda Bailey with illustrations by Isabelle Follath is part of the Who Wrote Classics series.

Arthur Conan Doyle grew up poor, but with a mother that would tell him stories. When he learned to read, he would borrow lots of books from the library. When he gets older, he creates Sherlock Holmes. Holmes becomes so famous that Doyle decides to kill him off, but Holmes can't stay dead, can he?

I liked this biography and the great illustrations with it. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has an interesting story and this is a good telling of it for younger readers.

This is a brilliantly written and illustrated book! I almost enjoyed the pictures more than the prose--but both were excellent.

A good friend of mine loves Sherlock Holmes, and she was the main reason I picked this up; I think if she and her husband were to ever have kids, this would make a great gift. :) It's charming and entertaining, with even a bit of humor scattered through. Definitely prompts me to pick up the Holmes books (and other Doyle works). I had no idea his interests were so varied--I could relate to that a lot!

Loved learning more about the author and his inspiration for his most famous character.

I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I have an upper teenage son who loves reading Sherlock Holmes. A few weeks ago, I handed him the book Arthur Who Wrote Sherlock, and suggested he might enjoy it. Well, he sat there reading it and laughing. I think he laughed through most of the book. Then, I read it to my seven-year-old last evening. She loved it, and when my 10-year-old heard some of it he wanted to read the book himself. As is true with good picture book biographies, this is another one that appeals to all ages.
Arthur Conan Doyle had rather a rough beginning in life. With a mentally ill father, there was never enough money to go around. The young boy found his escape from reality in books, and I had to laugh when I read  about the new rule the library had to make because of his voracious appetite for books.
As a newly trained doctor, Arthur did not have a lot of patients to keep him busy, so he passed the time writing stories. Most of his stories were rejected, but when he hit upon the idea of  a series of short stories about a detective, his writing career took off. But, what happens when stories become very popular, but the author gets tired of his character? The answer might take you by surprise.
Anyone who enjoys Sherlock Holmes will love Arthur Who Wrote Sherlock. It’s a fun story for anyone else too, though. With a fun story, and beautiful pictures, my younger children who have never read Sherlock Holmes and wouldn’t understand it yet, enjoyed the story almost as much as the older ones.  This is another beautiful picture book biography to add to our list of many we’ve enjoyed.
I received a review copy of this book from NetGalley, and these are my honest thoughts about it.

Thank you to the author, Tundra Books and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This children's book introduces the man behind one of the most famous detectives in the world - giving us insight into what shaped him as a child and young adult, and how creating the Sherlock Holmes mysteries changed the author's life. Arthur's upbringing was certainly not easy, and may be a bit overwhelming for some children. I loved the illustrations throughout!

This picture book is a great introduction to the life of Arthur Conan Doyle, who is best known for his Sherlock Holmes stories. Mixing fact with a bit of humor, this book made us want to dive right in to Sherlock Holmes stories and encouraged my children that telling stories can be part of their future. The illustrations were funny and detailed.

I enjoyed this book immensely. I admit whilst I knew Sherlock I knew little about the man who invented and wrote about him. The text was written with some ambitious language and I can see it appealing to lower KS2 children and their teachers. The illustrations really helped bring the story to life too. Would be great to see more authors lives covered in story books like this.

My favorite author is Arthur Conan Doyle. Thanks to his mother for giving him a wonderful life as a child. He never stops reading and gives people hope and inspired stories even when he was busied with his medical profession. That was when Sherlock Holmes is made. The character is genius and likable until today.

Thanks to @netgalley and Penguin Random House Canada for providing an earc. I give 5 ⭐️ for this lovely book. Watch out for the pub day on this October 18th!

Thanks Penguin Random House Canada/Tundra Books and NetGalley for this free book in return for my honest opinion.
I think most all children know of Sherlock Holmes but few know the story of the author/creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and this is a nifty little book that explores the highlights of his life and career, as well as his inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. Good illustrations and a simple story for kids to understand. Liked this book a lot!

I knew some facts about Doyle - who wouldn't but I must admit I have never extensively searched about him, to be honest. So this little kids' book on the psyche of Sir Arthur Doyle was something new and refreshing for me as well. No doubt he wrote such an amazing adventure of a detective since his life itself was so adventurous. Of course, this being a children's book, it doesn't go into any terrible details of life and it is a rather light-hearted version of it, but I am still worth reading.

I got a copy of Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a very well-done biography of the famous author Arthur Conan Doyle. While most of the story looks at Arthur’s life as compared to Sherlock Holmes, it also looks at his upbringing and the things in life that kept him grounded. It’s hard to put a life as loud as Conan Doyle into a picture book but this author has done it with aplomb. The illustrations are bright colorful and match both Arthur and the themes in settings of the book quite well.

As a graphic novel for children, this book is a total delight! It is short, easy to comprehend, and has beautiful illustrations. It is, for a child, the near-perfect introduction to a man who created the world's most well-known detective. I enjoyed reading it as an adult as well.

Sherlock Holmes is a name that has travelled through generations. My own introduction to "adult" fiction happened through Sherlock Holmes at the age of 12 when my mother passed on one of her Sherlock Holmes short story collections to me. It also started enduring my love affair with the mystery-thriller genre. I will, therefore, always remain grateful to Arthur Conan Doyle for bringing me a lot of joy for many years of my life.

Someday I will pass on the same Sherlock Holmes short story collection to my (future) children ALONG WITH this book, because I wish this was available to me when I was a child as well.

Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read and review this wonderful book!

Arthur Who Wrote Sherlock by Linda Bailey (illustrated by Isabelle Follath)

🕵️‍♂️ Sherlock Holmes is definitely the most well-known detective in the world, and he’s probably the most well-known fictional character in the world. But did you ever wonder about the man who created this iconic detective?

🕵️‍♂️ This wonderfully illustrated children’s book provides a brief biography of Arthur Conan Doyle along with information about who inspired the character of Sherlock.

🕵️‍♂️ The book also explains how Doyle started to dislike writing Sherlock stories because it was keeping him from writing the stories he really wanted to write. Doyle wrote 4 novels and 58 short stories about Sherlock, but he also wrote 18 non-Sherlock novels and 146 non-Sherlock short stories, not to mention plays, poetry, and even an operetta! Fortunately Doyle came to love his super sleuth as much as his adoring public and he figured out how to keep the Sherlock stories coming while still having time to develop his own interests.

🕵️‍♂️ I enjoyed this brief glimpse into Doyle’s life. It is a great example of an enjoyable nonfiction read for children.

🕵️‍♂️ This book is written for reading ages 5 to 9 years old and is 56 pages long.

Thank you @netgalley and @PenguinRandomCa @TundraBooks for a free eARC of this book, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Thank you so much Netgalley and the publisher for the review copy in exchange for honest opinion!

'Arthur Who Wrote Sherlock' is an extremely well-written biography. It not only captures the Arthur people know, the writer who brought Sherlock into existence but also includes the little known facts about his life. He was a kind and energetic person who undertook many exciting adventures and fought on behalf of people who had been cornered by injustice. He lived life according to his free will and pioneered many sports. His journey from a young boy tagged lazy and scatterbrained to one of the most celebrated writers in the world is portrayed with care and precision. I loved reading it so much. The illustration complemented the story perfectly. What an informative and entertaining read! Highly recommended.

The adventures of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes, come to life in this inspiring picture book biography.

Arthur Who Wrote Sherlock was such a sweet book. My favorite aspect of the book was the beautifully detailed illustrations. It brought the story to life. The writing was also enjoyable, and I liked the topic choice. If you are looking for something cute and non-fiction, then this is a great option.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of Arthur Who Wrote Sherlock by Linda Bailey. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for this ARC.

A simply delightful Book about one of Literature's most famous Detectives & his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle , but told from him as a child & how he came to write these wonderful ageless & timeless stories. The illustrations are most beautifully done & add to the richness of the Book , which is a joy for an adult who may be reading it to a child or for the child them self as they read it . I will be highly recommending it to friends & I will also be buying it for my grandchildren too .#NetGalley, #GoodReads, #FB, #Instagram, #Amazon.co.uk, #<img src="https://www.netgalley.com/badge/358a5cecda71b11036ec19d9f7bf5c96d13e2c55" width="80" height="80" alt="100 Book Reviews" title="100 Book Reviews"/>, #<img src="https://www.netgalley.com/badge/ef856e6ce35e6d2d729539aa1808a5fb4326a415" width="80" height="80" alt="Reviews Published" title="Reviews Published"/>, #<img src="https://www.netgalley.com/badge/aa60c7e77cc330186f26ea1f647542df8af8326a" width="80" height="80" alt="Professional Reader" title="Professional Reader"/>.

Picture Book Review!!!
Arthur Who Wrote Sherlock by Linda Bailey

Thanks again to @netgalley and @penguinrandomca for the advanced copy of this book!

This is the story of Arthur Conan Doyle’s life and legacy. My kids loved reading about him. It’s a little darker than the average picture book but we are all about those biographies!

The pictures are beautifully illustrated and kept my kids attention!

This book releases in October of 2022 just in time for a spooky Halloween read!

This is such an entertaining book suitable for the whole family to read together (though there was some arguing about seeing the great illustrations). An informative book about the back story to Arthur Conan Doyle's life and how he came to create the great Sherlock.
